Charles Spencer Chaplin Charles Spencer Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin
Anglo American actor, director, screenwriter, producer, composer.
Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889 in London, in a family of music hall artists with a failed career.
The personal and everyday troubles of acting life did not bypass this family...
Charlie and his half brother Sydney grew up with their mother.
Chaplin Sr. lived in poverty and could not help them.
To make ends meet, my mother hired a nurse, sheathed members of the church community.
Poverty undermined the mother's health.
She was admitted to a mental hospital, then placed in a workhouse.
Sydney and Charlie were wandering.
A few months later, they were sent to the Hanwell Orphanage for street Children.
On November 12, 1898, the mother was released from the hospital and together with her sons she settled in Methley Street.
At the age of nine, Charlie found himself in the children's cockdance ensemble "Eight Lancashire Guys".
For two years he traveled with the ensemble around the English province.
After Chaplin left the ensemble, performances with songs, dances, parodies alternated with prosaic occupations of a newspaper seller, a messenger, a servant in a private house, a printer in a printing house, an apprentice, even a dance teacher, a wood sawyer and a glassblower.
Charlie left home at the age of sixteen and got a job in the theater.
In 1907, he was accepted into the famous pantomime troupe of F. Carnot.
During the American tour of the troupe at the end of 1912, the young artist was noticed by producer Mack Sennett, offered a contract with the Keystone film company and invited to act.
A year later, after discussing all the conditions, Chaplin signed a contract with Keystone and moved to Los Angeles.
Chaplin's first film was the comic strip "Earning a Living" (1914), and in the film "Children's Car Racing in Venice" (1914), he first appeared in his soon to become traditional appearance.
Chaplin has already shot his thirteenth film "Caught in the Rain" (1914) himself.
In just this one year, Charlie Chaplin starred in more than 34 films and became widely known as one of the most talented comedians of American cinema, which soon allowed him to gain creative independence.
In 1915, he produced twelve films for the Chicago company "Essence".
The best acting and directing works of this period are considered to be the paintings "The Tramp", "Pilgrim", "Baby", "Gold Rush".
A deeper interpretation of the image of Charlie was created by the actor and director in the lyrical tragicomedies "Circus" and "City Lights".
At the beginning of 1916, Chaplin moved to the company "Mutual" with a contract for 670 thousand dollars a year.
On September 23, 1918, Charlie married the fifteen year old actress Mildred Harris.
He got married hastily, because his young girlfriend claimed that she was expecting a child.
Then it turned out that the alarm was false.
An unsuccessful marriage caused Chaplin to have a creative crisis.
In 1919, he made only two films.
Striving for independence, Chaplin, along with David Griffith, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, organized the United Artists film company.
And in 1922, the director created his own company, Charles Chaplin Film Corporation.
On July 7, 1919, Mildred gave birth to a son, Norman, but he lived only three days.
Chaplin plunged into his work.
Ten days after the tragedy, he was doing auditions for a new film "The Kid" (1920).
Charlie spent more than a year on this film, investing 300 thousand dollars.
Chaplin and Mildred Harris parted without mutual reproaches.
however, journalists fanned a loud scandal, and Mildred accused her husband of cruelty.
During the divorce process, the lawyers threatened to confiscate the film "Baby".
Chaplin fled to Salt Lake City, taking with him the negative of the painting.
In 1925, Charlie Chaplin directed one of the best films of all time — "The Gold Rush" (1925).
During the filming of this film, Chaplin was forced to marry 15 year old Lita Gray, who was expecting a child from him, otherwise he was threatened with prison.
He lived with Lita for two years, they had sons Sidney and Charlie.
But it was not possible to create a real family...
On January 15, 1926, Chaplin began filming The Circus and worked on the film until the end of the year.
But he was covered by a new scandal: in early December, Lita Gray, along with her sons, moved to her mother.
On January 10, 1927, her lawyers filed for divorce.
Charlie was hiding with his lawyer.
The society was agitated by rumors about Chaplin's insanity and even suicide.
Lita accused her husband of cruelty and immorality.
Her application to the court consisted of 42 pages.
As a result, she received a million dollars in compensation and a solid lifetime annuity, and Chaplin ended up in a clinic for the mentally ill.
He came out of the clinic completely gray haired.
Conceived as a fun comedy, "Circus" has acquired a gloomy intonation.
Charles never became an American citizen, which angered many American conservatives.
In July 1932, he met the actress Paulette Godard.
They took long car trips, went on a yacht to Catalina.
During the Second World War, Chaplin became considered a leftist, because he released the film "The Great Dictator", in which there was an impassioned call to open a second front in Europe to help the Soviet Union in its war against Hitler's Germany.
As before, a lot of mental strength was taken away from him by complicated personal affairs.
In 1942, Paulette Godard divorced him in Mexico, indicating the reason for the incompatibility of characters, as well as the fact of a long separation.
At this time, Chaplin was looking for an actress for the main role in the film "Ghost and Reality".
He was offered to try 17 year old Una O'Neill, the daughter of a famous playwright.
She was not only beautiful, but also smart.
And suddenly a new scandal broke out.
A young actress Joan Barry appealed to the court, demanding to recognize Chaplin as the father of her child.
A comparative blood test refuted her words, but the court ordered Chaplin to pay Joan Barry an allowance!
Hollywood has never liked a brilliant cinematographer.
Increasingly, there were voices for the deportation of Chaplin because of his left wing orientation and fascination with nymphets.
At the height of the scandal, on June 15, 1943, 54 year old Chaplin and young Una O'Neill were married.
Neither the groom's advanced age nor his small stature bothered Una.
Marriage with this amazing woman gave Charles resilience against the storms and crises of the 1940s.
Their family grew rapidly.
Geraldine was born first (1944), followed by Michael (1946), Josephine Hannah (1949), Victoria (1951)...
In May 1947, journalists again began pestering Chaplin with the question why he did not want to take American citizenship.
NBC arranged to eavesdrop on his phone conversations.
After the release of the film "Monsieur Verdoux" in 1947, Chaplin was attacked by the conservative part of society and censorship, because his views on modern society seemed too gloomy to them.
The sessions of this film were picketed, and in some cities its demonstration was banned altogether.
In the end, this film was generally withdrawn from distribution.
On September 17, 1952, Chaplin sailed with his family to England, announcing that he was leaving "for a long vacation", but apparently realizing that he might not return back.
After several months of traveling, he chose the Manoir de Ban for permanent residence ("The Estate of the exile") in Switzerland, in the city of Corsier sur Vevey — a three story villa with 37 acres of land.
The family had four more children: Eugene (1953), Jane (1957), Annette (1959) and Christopher (1961).
Chaplin and his wife had many friends in Switzerland.
Among them were the Queen of Spain, movie stars and writers.
In the spring, guests from different countries always came to them.
Una was not only Chaplin's wife.
the mother of his children, the friend in misfortune — she was his deity.
The old age of the great actor and director passed with this fragile, modest and sweet woman in amazing harmony.
The preservation of financial freedom allowed Charles Chaplin to re establish his own company in early 1956, which was called the Attica Film Company.
The University of Oxford awarded Chaplin an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature.
For outstanding achievements in world cinema, he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor.
At the Venice International Film Festival, Charles was awarded the Golden Lion (1972).
The American Film Academy also noted Chaplin, awarding him the Academy Award (1972) for his outstanding contribution to cinema.
The great Chalin was preparing for attacks, but his appearance at the ceremony caused a standing ovation.
Amazed by this reception, he found it difficult to find words and demonstrated his famous trick with a bowler hat.
In March 1975, the Queen of England knighted him.
The ceremony resulted in Chaplin's unquestioning triumph.
He died on December 25, 1977, on Christmas Night.
He died in Corsier sur Vevey (Switzerland), surrounded by relatives, and he was 89 years old.
His whole life was full of extraordinary stories, rumors and gossip, and even death did not put an end to them.
Three months after the funeral, Chaplin's coffin was stolen from the grave.
The kidnappers demanded a ransom of 600 thousand francs from the actor's family.
When the family refused, the police took up the case in earnest.
Six months later, the criminals were caught, and the coffin with the remains was returned to its place...
Even after passing away, Charlie continued to give movies plots for films... last updated information: 06.11.16 print version
