Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born on January 17 (29), 1860 in the city of Taganrog.
In the family, besides him, there were 5 more children – four brothers and a sister.
Website: Biographies of famous people
Anton Pavlovich's father, a former clerk, was the owner of a small shop.
He called himself a"merchant".
Pavel Yegorovich kept his children strictly.
They had to study, work in their father's shop and sing in the church choir created by their father.
The shop was open from 5 am to 11 pm, and the children still had time to study at the gymnasium and learn a craft.
Anton Chekhov studied to be a tailor.
Anton Pavlovich's mother, Yevgenia Yakovlevna, was the granddaughter of a serf who was bought out to freedom.
She managed to soften her husband's severity towards the children.
Later Anton Pavlovich said: "The talent in us is from the father's side, and the soul is from the mother's side."
Anton Pavlovich began to get interested in theater and literature at an early age.
The first of his works was written for the theater and was called "Fatherless".
Chekhov wrote it as a teenager.
Chekhov studied at the gymnasium.
In the fourth grade, he "collaborated" in a handwritten magazine, the publisher of which was one of the high school students.
Here, for the first time, a satirical poem by 13 year old Chekhov was placed.
1875 Chekhov's brothers moved to Moscow and became students.
My father was ruined.
The whole Chekhov family soon moved to Moscow, with the exception of Anton Pavlovich – he stayed in Taganrog to finish high school.
From a well off person, he turned into a poor man – this happened to his entire family.
Chekhov had to earn a living by private lessons.
1879 Anton Pavlovich arrives in Moscow and enters the medical faculty of Moscow University.
During his student years, Chekhov actively collaborates with humorous magazines ("Dragonfly", "Fragments", "Alarm Clock"), working under the pseudonym Antosha Chekhov.
He writes small satirical stories, but they already feel the talent of a writer.
The heroes of the stories were "small" people from the city and village.
1884 Chekhov graduates from the university and comes to the city of Voskresensk, which is located near Moscow.
Here the Chekhov family rents a dacha in the Babkino estate.
Chekhov spent every summer in Voskresensk until 1887.
1885 – the first Chekhov stories of a new type appear in print.
The comic side no longer plays a major role in them.
1886 the first collection of short stories by A. P. Chekhov is published
1887 the second collection of short stories by A. P. Chekhov is published.
During these years, Anton Pavlovich has been working as a zemstvo doctor in a hospital near Zvenigorod.
Here he also attends meetings of county judicial congresses, acts as an expert.
In the end, Chekhov realizes that his true vocation is not in medicine, but in literature.
1890 Chekhov leaves for Sakhalin.
In those days, it was a long and difficult journey.
Chekhov was ill on the way, but this did not prevent him from enjoying the Siberian landscapes and getting to know people.
Anton Pavlovich wrote to his sister: "My God, how rich Russia is with good people!".
Some researchers claim that if there had not been this trip to Sakhalin – the island of hard labor and exile – there would not have been not only Chekhov's book about Sakhalin, but also the work "Chamber No. 6".
Chekhov is not limited to Sakhalin alone.
He also visited India, Singapore, Ceylon, and Constantinople.
1890s Chekhov became a writer, known not only at home, but also in Europe.
1892 Chekhov acquires the Melikhovo estate, located near Moscow, in the Serpukhov district.
At the time of purchase, Melikhovo was an ordinary neglected estate, but the Chekhov family quickly put it in order.
Here Anton Pavlovich received patients every day from the very morning.
Here, in Melikhovo, Chekhov is elected as a zemstvo vowel.
It was to him that the local population owed the fact that a highway was built from the station of Lopasnya to Melikhov, and schools were built in Melikhov itself and in the surrounding estates.
Mid 1890s during this period, Chekhov was established as a playwright.
1895 Chekhov writes "The Seagull".
October 1896 - the play "The Seagull" was staged at the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
The performance ended in a complete failure.
Chekhov felt this event hard; the failure of the" Seagull " cost him his health.
Autumn 1897 spring 1898 Chekhov lives in the south of France.
Doctors advised him to go to the Riviera or Nice, take a break from hard work and improve his health.
September 1898 Chekhov meets Olga Leonardovna Knipper.
A year later, a correspondence is established between them.
It is known that each of them wrote more than four hundred letters.
1900-1902 Chekhov Honorary academician
in the Pushkin Department of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.
The beginning of the 1900s Chekhov is friends with L. N. Tolstoy and M. Gorky.
In the autumn of 1901, when Tolstoy was living in Gaspra, Chekhov often visited him.
1901 Chekhov writes "Three Sisters".
The peculiarity of this work is that in it the author openly declares: changes are coming.
May 25 (June 7), 1901 Chekhov and Knipper were married.
The marriage lasted until the death of Anton Pavlovich.
1901-1902 the complete works of A. P. Chekhov were published in 10 volumes.
Autumn 1903 The Cherry Orchard, Chekhov's dying work, was written.
July 2 (15), 1904 Anton Pavlovich Chekhov dies in the German resort town of Badenweiler.
A few days later, the body was transported to Moscow and buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
