March 9, 2014 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet, artist, thinker, revolutionary democrat.
Ukrainian poet, novelist and artist Taras Shevchenko was born on March 9 (February 25, old style), 1814 in the village of Morintsy, Kiev province (now Cherkasy region, Ukraine) in the family of a serf peasant.
His childhood years were spent in his native village and in the village of Kirilovka.
The future poet was orphaned early.
In 1828, Taras Shevchenko entered service in the house of landowner Pavel Engelhardt in the village of Vilshana, a year later he served in his house in Vilna, and since 1831 in St. Petersburg.
Having discovered the young man's ability to draw, Engelhardt decided to make him a home painter and sent him to study with the artist Vasily Shiryaev in 1832.
As part of the Shiryaev artel, Shevchenko took part in the painting of the St. Petersburg Bolshoi Theater as an apprentice draftsman.
In 1838, Shevchenko's influential patrons, including the artist Karl Bryullov, the poets Vasily Zhukovsky and Yevgeny Grebenka, bought him out of serfdom.
After receiving his freedom, Shevchenko became a student of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
Due to the high level of training, he was enrolled immediately in the fourth grade.
