Positioning
In Lenovo, the line with the P index has always included devices with large batteries, it is enough to recall a model such as the Lenovo P780, in which the battery was 4000 mAh.
Review of the Lenovo P780 smartphone
This series was deservedly in demand, as it included such hard workers, phones without claims to design sophistication, working for a long time, with average characteristics for their time.
That is, devices with an optimal price/quality ratio, according to Lenovo, besides, focused on those who are not used to changing phones like gloves.
It was assumed that the life of such devices would be at least one year in one hand, or even all two.
I'll tell you a little secret, any characteristic that stands out from the usual ones for the market, whether it's the thickness of the case, the special brightness of the screen, the large battery capacity all this attracts attention.
Usually, manufacturers do not seek to be generous so that in the models of the middle segment they give the consumer a lot of outstanding characteristics – just one, which will emphasize the unusual nature of the device.
Therefore, as a rule, the solution turns out to be unbalanced – subtlety turns out to be a short working time, a large battery on the contrary, inconvenient dimensions of the case and a long charging time.
There is no ideal on the market, and it is hardly possible.
When companies start experimenting with models of the middle segment, they rarely get something really worthwhile.
They look at competitors, at previous models, as a result, a cross between a bulldog and a rhinoceros enters the market and becomes not very popular.
Sometimes, in the process of experiments and thanks to luck, a device is obtained that can be called special with good reason.
It is distinguished by the exact balance of characteristics, the correctly chosen cost, as a result an excellent price/quality ratio.
Such a device is the Lenovo P70.
This is a workhorse on Android, which will be chosen for a good working time, fast charging, a good screen.
One could call this device a universal solution, but it lacks the smallest thing – a high quality camera.
This flaw may stop many from buying the P70, but if you close your eyes to it, the model turned out to be surprisingly interesting.
However, let's talk about everything in order.

Design, dimensions, control elements
Outside of China, this model will be available in one color scheme – dark blue, while in the native market it is presented in a white case, as well as dark brown.
Externally, the device does not make any impression, the usual rectangle of an Android smartphone, a black front panel, three touch keys under the screen.
The first thing you pay attention to is a rather thin case, if you know that there is a 4000 mAh battery inside.
The dimensions of the device are 142x71.
8x8.
9 mm, weight 149 grams.
Usually models with such batteries weigh about 200 grams, so the weight of 149 grams looks amazing.
In everyday life, you always feel this, the device is not much different from modern smartphones.
You can say that it is not so thin, but this is already a taste.
Usually you donot perceive it as big or uncomfortable, it fits well in your hand, the weight is rather big, but quite comfortable.
Compared to Nokia Lumia 830
The back cover is removable, it must be carefully snapped, otherwise it will crackle in your hands.
The plastic is thin, but it does not cause any problems, it is not visible from the outside, and this moment does not affect the characteristics of the device.
Everywhere you need to save weight to reach the same 149 grams.
On the right side there is an on/off key, a paired volume control key.
On the upper end there is a 3.5 mm connector, on the lower end there is a microUSB connector.
On the back panel there is an LED flash, as well as a 13 megapixel camera lens.
There are no complaints about the build quality, it is plastic, the front panel is covered with Gorilla Glass, although the oleophobic coating is average in characteristics, there are noticeable traces of hands and cheeks on it.
Under the back cover, you can see two connectors for microSIM cards, they are not equal, one is only 2G, while the second is 2G/3G/4G.
There is also a slot for memory cards.

Display
The screen is 5 inches, has an HD resolution of 1280x720 pixels (294 dots per inch), IPS.
It has a good margin for brightness, in the automatic adjustment mode, the brightness is strongly muted in order to achieve a longer working time.
This is convenient in almost all operating modes, except for watching videos.
In terms of color reproduction, the screen does not stand out in its class in any way, neither for the worse nor for the better.
This is a very good solution.
In older Lenovo models, the screens may have a higher resolution, but often worse color reproduction, lower brightness.
This matrix can be considered a golden mean in every sense.
She's not bad.
Look at the screenshots in comparison with the Samsung Galaxy S5 (in the photo, the Galaxy S5 from above).
On the street, the screen does not glare, the information is well read.
Traditionally, Lenovo has a choice of fonts of different sizes, which makes using the phone comfortable regardless of your visual acuity (four preset sizes).
I would like more flexibility in the settings, for example, different color options.
But it was not worth expecting this on such a device.

Battery
Battery technology has clearly stepped forward over the past year, the size of the battery has decreased slightly, but most importantly, its weight has decreased.
Li Ion battery, it is non removable, with a capacity of 4000 mAh (in China and Indonesia 3900 mAh).
Let's start with the most interesting thing, namely the charging time.
There is support for Quick Charge technology, respectively, the full charging time is about 3 hours.
If you take the Fast Charger from the Galaxy Note 4, the charging time will be 2 hours and 10 minutes (up to one hundred percent!).
In any case, this is clearly comparable to most modern devices and very little for a battery of this capacity.
Among the unusual chips, I will note the presence of a USB OTG cable, to which you can connect any charging wire to the USB connector, at the output you will get 5V, 0.5 A, that is, the phone can act as an external charger.
I am sure that few people will take advantage of this opportunity, but it is present and can sometimes be useful.
Now let's look at the real time of operation in different modes, but first – the data that the manufacturer provides:
up to 34 days in standby mode (2G)
up to 46 hours of talk time in 2G (up to 18 hours in 3G)
In my usage scenario, automatic screen illumination was set, I made calls for about 30 minutes a day, also about 2-2.
5 hours on social networks, the Internet, both via 3G/4G connection (mainly) and Wi Fi.
The device worked quietly for two full days.
Interestingly, I have a Motorola Droid Turbo on my hands, which has an almost similar battery of 3900 mAh, there is also fast charging, but the screen is AMOLED.
However, these devices work about the same time in my hands, two days.
For comparison, my Note 4 (3220 mAh battery) pulls only one day at a similar load.
In every sense, the P70 demonstrates a very good operating time.
But even here, not everything is unambiguous, since some modes consume you have an unexpected amount of energy compared to others.
So, I expected that with the maximum brightness of the backlight, the video playback time (AVI, MX Player, HW mode) would be about 14-15 hours, as on the Droid Turbo, but the result was disappointing – about 10.5 hours.
I double checked, there is no error – the battery consistently gives 10-10.
5 hours of playback.
Even worse is the optimization for games, as soon as 3D appears, the phone begins to warm up noticeably, which is not observed in normal operating modes, and it only works for about 4 hours.
That is, 1000 mAh is consumed in an hour of play.
Given that the screen does not have the largest diagonal, all this does not look like the best optimization of the chipset for specific tasks.
But for those who do not play, watch moderate videos (50 minutes a day), this device will be enough for those two days.
Another point, there is a setting in the power manager that by default enables the maximum power saving mode from 12 am to 6 am.
In this mode, data transmission is disabled, only calls and SMS are available.
If you do not like this approach, then you can either adjust the time interval, or completely prohibit this mode.
Platform, Memory, Performance
The model is based on the MediaTek MT6752 chipset, this is a second generation 8 core solution that is focused on models of the middle price group.
One of the nice features is each Cortex A53 core, the frequency is up to 1.7 GHZ (64 bits).
The Mali T760 graphics coprocessor, as well as for the first time for the MediaTek chipset of this class, there is built in support for LTE cat.
4 (FDD, TDD is declared, but it is not implemented specifically in this model).
The amount of RAM is 2 GB, the built in memory is 16 GB, 12 GB is available to the user.
Despite the fact that the microSD card slot is available under the back cover, hot swapping of cards, unlike SIM cards, is not supported.
If you insert a memory card into a working device, it will happily inform you that hot swapping is not for it, and it will reboot.
This is offensive and somehow a little conservative.
Another disadvantage is that the specifications indicate support for memory cards only up to 32 GB.
I tried cards with a capacity of both 64 and 128 GB, they do not work.
This will not be a very serious restriction for many.
Now let's focus on performance.
Judging by the interface, everything is very good here, no brakes, everything is smooth and pleasant.
In synthetic tests, the device shows average results, they are not very high.
But that's why these tests exist to show virtual parrots.
I am sure that for the vast majority of people, the performance of this solution is quite enough.
It is located between the Snapdragon 400 and 600 series.

Communication capabilities
The smartphone works in GSM, HSDPA and LTE (4G) networks and is equipped with two slots for microSIM cards.
The first slot supports LTE FDD (bands 1, 3, 7, 20), so in Russia the device works without problems with 4G networks.
The second slot is mainly intended for the SIM card that you plan to call, but it can also be used for data transfer.
However, only with the help of 2G (Edge).
USB.
For synchronization with a PC and data transfer, a complete microUSB cable is used.
USB 2.0 interface.
USB OTG is supported – flash drives and other drives with FAT/FAT32 file systems can be connected to the smartphone via an adapter.
Bluetooth.
Built in Bluetooth 4.0 module with support for the A2DP profile.
Wi Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n).
The smartphone has a dual band Wi Fi module, it works without complaints.
Like any other modern Android device, the Lenovo P70 supports the function of" sharing " the mobile Internet via Wi Fi (Wi Fi router).

Camera
The usual 13 megapixel module with autofocus, which gives disappointing pictures, they do not look good even on the phone screen.
However, you can see this for yourself.
Example #1

Software features
The device is released on Android 4.4.4, at the moment it is the latest version of the OS.
All the features of the Android add on called Vibe UI are described in a separate material.
I wonot repeat myself.
Review of the Lenovo Vibe UI interface 2014/2015
The question remains whether there will be an update to version 5.0.
From the point of view of the chipset, such an update is supported.
But whether it will be available for this model is unknown.
But the company is trying to update its key models, the P70 belongs to them.
There are no deadlines yet, nor what the update will look like (cable, over the air).
To the content >>>
Multimedia features
Traditionally, there is an FM radio, audio recording from the air is supported.
There is no separate player for playing music, only Google Play Music.
Everything is traditional and familiar, but there is a hardware equalizer, you can adjust the sound for yourself.
The phone sounds nice, although it does not stand out in anything special.
The maximum volume level is comfortable, although the device definitely does not have a reserve.
The video is distinguished by the support of the H. 265 codec, otherwise everything is familiar and ordinary.
The volume of the call is slightly higher than average, you can not hear the phone in the pocket of your outerwear.
There are no comments on the quality of communication, everything works well, although there are often re registrations from 4G to 3G and back, at least, if you believe the indicator.
I think the latter is lying, since in practice there is no increased battery discharge.
Now let's focus on the cost of this solution.
In China, the Lenovo P70 costs 1500 yuan, but at the same time it has slightly worse characteristics, it is a de facto different model.
The European model P70 A has the maximum characteristics, its cost will be about $ 250 (as an option, the price in euros will be slightly less or the same).
In Russia, this model was supposed to fall into the price range of 12-14 thousand rubles before the exchange rate fluctuations of the ruble, but it is unknown what the price will be at the end of February, when it appears.
For a reference point, take the same $ 250 plus a Russian mark up of 20-25 percent.
For its cost, the model turned out to be well balanced, potentially it can interest many buyers.
A good screen, the presence of a large 4000 mAh battery with a modest case size and a really long work from a single charge.
There are not so many analogs on the market that are similar in characteristics, it is enough to recall the Philips W6618, which has a 5300 mAh battery, but all other characteristics are worse – 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal memory, a 5 inch screen with qHD resolution and a price of about $ 200.
The low price does not atone for its shortcomings, including the weight of 200 grams.
It feels like a device of a completely different class.
In Russia, the Chinese model Gionee GN185 is also known under various local names, in which the battery is 4200 mAh.
Among the disadvantages – the old platform, the weight of 195 grams, noticeably worse characteristics.
By the time the Lenovo P70 appears, many companies will update their lines, new generation devices with high capacity batteries will appear.
In each case, you need to look at the presence of fast charging, the weight of the device – these are the main indicators for this kind of devices.
If the Lenovo P70 had a slightly better camera, and this device could definitely be called a bestseller, but for now it is a very good contender for the role of a hard worker.
Working time, a good screen – these are the arguments in its favor.
The model is successful, and it will definitely find its consumer.
