Video review and unpacking Design and configuration Software Camera Tests and performance Conclusions
Some manufacturers believe that the appearance of long – running solutions does not greatly concern potential buyers if they want a powerful battery, they will close their eyes to the design.
Other companies believe that the appearance is much more important to the audience, and the battery "for a day or two" is quite enough – therefore, they willingly sacrifice thickness, setting new and new records, simultaneously leaving the capacity of nutrients at the same level.
Fortunately, vendors are beginning to realize that many people need a golden mean, so the market is increasingly meeting good models with impressive mAh indicators.
One of them is the Lenovo P70.
Technical Specifications of Lenovo P70:

Video review and unpacking
Design and configuration
The Russian representative office of Lenovo defends the interests of buyers, so that Russians, buying smartphones from the company's official supplies, get the maximum configuration.
In the case of the P70, we are talking about a hard plastic case, a protective film on the display and an OTG cable, which complement the usual set of documentation, a microUSB cable, charging (2000 mA), a headset.
The 4000 mAh battery is built in.
The case covers the back and sides, but the upper and lower ends are not covered with anything.
Its shape is not covering, so there are no sides from the cover above the display.
But the sides are available in the design of the phone itself, so you can safely put the device with the screen down.
The film is designed to save you from scratches in your bag or pocket.
The case is thin and has a rough texture, so the ergonomics does not suffer from it in any way, and the probability of letting the smartphone out of your hand decreases sharply – it is not slippery at all.
The dimensions of the Lenovo P70 are 142 x 71.8 x 8.9 mm.
To understand what kind of work the manufacturer had to adjust the battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh to such dimensions, I will give the parameters of other well known 5” models.
LG Nexus 5 – 137.9 x 69.2 x 8.6 and 2300 mAh; Lenovo Vibe X2 – 140.2 x 68.6 x 7.3 and 2300 mAh; HTC One (E8) – 146.4 x 70.7 x 9.9 and 2600 mAh;
Nokia Lumia 830 – 139.4 x 70.7 x 8.5 mm and 2200 mAh; LG G3s – 137.7 x 69.6 x 10.3 and 2540 mAh.
The test subject weighs 149 grams – not a fluff, like the Vibe X2, but the pocket does not pull off, like the Lumia 920.
In general, in appearance and tactile sensations, the Lenovo P70 is perceived as an ordinary smartphone, and not a cobblestone, like the vast majority of centenarians.
The assembly, by the way, is good – the lid fits tightly, there are no creaks when twisting.
Above the screen there is a 5 MP camera, sensors, a conversational speaker, under the grid of which an LED indicator is integrated.
There are three backlit touch keys under the display.
On the left – empty, on the right the volume rocker and the power button (the elements are at the correct height, right under your fingers).
The lower end received a microUSB, a microphone and two perforated sections, and one of them hides the speaker (it sounds flat, the volume is average), and the other is a decoy made for symmetry.
The upper end has a 3.5 mm audio jack and an additional microphone.
At the back, we see a 13 MP camera peephole, a flash and the Lenovo logo.
The lid is removed from the side.
Two micro SIM slots, a microSD memory card slot and a battery are hidden under it, the sticker and the inscription on the battery itself warns about its non removable nature.
Of course, you can pull it out with a screwdriver, but the manufacturer recommends leaving it for service centers.
The display without an air layer is made using IPS technology.
With a diagonal of 5” and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, the pixel density is 294 ppi.
The value is comfortable, but the panel is not configured in the best way – the picture is too sharp, which makes some interface elements and fonts look strange, just like the over worn LG G3.
However, the screen has a sufficient margin of brightness and high viewing angles with non critical color inversion.
In general, for its class, the P70 has a high quality display.
It's just a pity that there is no item in the settings with color rendering adjustment and additional brightness modes, like the Vibe Z2 Pro and Vibe X2.
As for the materials, the matte plastic at the lid and frame, as well as transparent inserts on the top and bottom in the style of the original Sony Xperia Z are a good choice of engineers.
Practical and cute.
However, you can grumble at the weakness of the lid (in the case of using the case, it does not matter), the lack of an oleophobic coating at the camera eye (it is difficult to wipe off stains) and dust clogging the sides of the screen.
Software
Currently, the device is based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat with a Vibe UI 2.0 shell, an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop is planned for the second quarter of this year.
The user interface is familiar to us from the previous models of the company – Vibe Z2 Pro and Vibe X2.
In my opinion, it is designed in a pleasant corporate style and has a number of interesting chips that are missing in the stock.
People hastily replaced the old versions of the Vibe UI with third party launchers due to lags and a clumsy appearance, but the current one, judging by the reviews, suits many.
To change the wallpaper on the desktop, it is not necessary to go to the settings – it is enough to make a diagonal swipe from the upper corner.
The wallpaper on the lock screen also changes by scrolling sideways.
Gestures on desktops are configured by the user.
For example, a swipe down (not by widgets) drops the curtain (it can be slightly customized), a swipe up pulls off the list of running applications, and by double tapping on an empty place, you can open the desktop menu.
The sound mode can be selected by holding down the power button – when changing the volume, only a single slider appears.
The store of themes from the European firmware, unfortunately, was cut out, giving the opportunity to choose only from two – Mirage and Pulse.
The settings are displayed in two tabs "System" and "Special".
In the first one, the SIM parameters are configured, the place for installing applications is selected (there is OTG support), the power saving modes are activated.
The programmers attributed gesture control (double tap on the screen to wake up, a sharp shake to lock), smart menu (a pop up customizable menu that is useless for 5”) and smart scripts (scheduled services) to special parameters.
The package of pre installed programs includes its own software (a security package with an antivirus and blockers of unwanted tasks, services for synchronization, a proprietary video player with working in a window and creating screenshots), Google services and applications, programs from partners.
The latter include the Guvera music streaming service, the UC browser, the QIWI payment system, the Evernote online notepad, the WPS Office Office application, several demo versions of games, applications from Yandex, and social network clients.
The main part of the pre installed software from partners can be very easily removed, but it will not be possible to get rid of Google services and branded programs without root.
Camera
The 13 MP main camera has autofocus, flash, f/2.0 aperture.
The interface is familiar from other Lenovo models, but I met some shooting modes for the first time.
In addition to the normal mode and panorama, there is a portrait mode with retouching, 3D model volumetric shooting (you shoot the object as a panorama, and then you can scroll with the slider), a live photo (video) and a shot in motion for a series of frames.
There are only 8 filters.
The resulting frames lack clarity.
The resolution of 13 MP is felt, but some pictures look like something "sterile", or something.
However, if you do not find fault, then the camera of the P70 is very good – better than the one in the Vibe X2 (review).
The white balance is selected accurately, the exposure is almost not walking.
The video is written in Full HD resolution at 30 fps.
In general, the result is no better and no worse than that of classmates, but I still want to praise the P70 for the sound recording.
I donot want to praise the stabilizer, the lack of tracking autofocus and soapy at long distances.
Example:
Tests and performance
The MediaTek MT6752 chipset with 8 Cortex A7 cores with a frequency of 1.7 GHz, 64 bit support and the Mali T760MP2 graphics accelerator has already met us in the Meizu M1 Note and Jiayu S3 (review), where it has proven itself very well – especially in games.
Moreover, the previously considered models on the MT6752 have a Full HD screen resolution, and the Lenovo P70 has HD (that is, 2.25 times lower).
As a result, the P70 copes even more smartly with gaming applications (even resource intensive games come with maximum graphics at 30 fps and higher) and gains even more parrots in benchmarks.
There are no complaints about the speed of the interface either – the shell is well optimized and 2 GB of RAM do their job.
Test results: AnTuTu 5.6.2 – 44 170, Geekbench 3 – 816/4166, 3DMark Unlimited 10 868, GFXBench for 720p and 1080p – 11/25 fps and 5.7 / 16 fps, Basemark OS 2-839, Epic Citadel Ultra 52.1 fps.
normal mode
power saving mode
The operating frequencies were found out with the Stability Test and CPU Spy applications.
In normal mode, without the "smart savings for screen and GPU" popular frequency in a half hour run are settled in the following order: 1.4 GHz (35% of the time), 1.7 GHz (27%), 1.3 GHz (15%), 1.6 GHz (11%) and 1.2 GHz (9%).
Smart saving the 1.7 GHz (31%), 1.6 GHz (20%), 1.2 GHz (18%), 1.4 GHz (16%) and 1.3 GHz (12%).
That is, in both modes we are dealing with active trottling –adjusting the processor frequency depending on the load and heating.
And there is no tangible difference between them in reality.
First, the cores ran for 75 cycles.
Secondly, the battery discharge for half an hour was 11% each.
Thirdly, the battery heating in both modes reached 40 degrees.
The maximum level of recorded heating of the battery according to the sensor was generally 42 degrees.
At the same time, the case itself was warm and only.
So you donot have to worry about overheating.
From a 4000 mAh battery, you expect impressive results and the Lenovo P70 does not fail.
So the working time when playing videos with maximum screen brightness and active wireless modules was an impressive 10 hours and 10 minutes, and the discharge in the GTA San Andreas game with comfortable brightness reached 9% in half an hour (18% per hour or 5.5 hours of active games).
In everyday life, you can count on 6-10 hours of active screen in 3-6 days.
Good autonomy indicators cannot be achieved by increasing the mAh alone, so you need to pay tribute to Lenovo (for software optimization and hardware implementation) and MediaTek (for not a voracious chip).
According to the manufacturer, the smartphone is fully charged from the branded unit in 3 hours, and a 15 minute fast charge is enough for 2 hours of web surfing or 7 hours of listening to music.
The question of sound in headphones worries many people.
I can say that the company's programmers have not badly revealed the potential of the Wolfson WM8281 integrated audio chip, which is part of MediaTek MT6752.
In conjunction with the Denon D600 headphones, the device plays slightly better than the Vibe X2 and Jiayu S3, but worse than the M1 Note and Vibe Z2 Pro.
I would like to focus more on the bass, but even so it will do – most will remain pretty sound.
Conclusions
Lenovo P70 is a perfect example of what a long running smartphone should be.
It has a convenient design with an attractive appearance, provides impressive autonomy and high speed of operation, its camera with the right approach will allow you to make small masterpieces, and you can still get used to a sharp screen.
The Chinese company could have rolled out just a compromise phone with a powerful battery, but it acted more far sighted, comprehensively preparing the device for different use scenarios.
It seems that the P70 has no direct competitors among A brands, but opponents with capacious batteries are available in the catalogs of B and C brands.
Their main advantage over the P70 is the price, but the Lenovo product is not inferior in support and comprehensive balance.
The current recommended retail price of the Lenovo P70 is 19,990 rubles.
If you are not satisfied with the screen size of the test subject, then it makes sense to pay attention to the Meizu M1 Note (review).
Despite the smaller battery capacity, the device still pleasantly surprises with its autonomy, which is advantageously complemented by the camera, sound and proprietary Flyme firmware.
