Aldous Huxley
Country: United Kingdom Born:
He died on July 26, 1894:
November 22, 1963 Both on his father's and mother's sides, Huxley belonged to the British cultural elite, which gave a number of outstanding scientists, writers, and artists.
His father is the writer Leonard Huxley, his paternal grandfather is the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley (in Russia his name is usually written as Huxley); on his mother's side, Huxley is the great grandson of the historian and educator Thomas Arnold and the great nephew of the writer Matthew Arnold.
Huxley's brothers Julian and Andrew were famous biologists.
In his father's well equipped laboratory, Huxley began self education, which he then continued at the Hillside School, where his mother became his first teacher.
When Aldous was 13 years old, his mother died.
Three years later, at the age of 16, he suffered from keratitis, which led to the fact that he was deprived of vision for almost 18 months.
Thanks to the fact that he used special glasses and one of his eyes began to see, Aldous could read, he also mastered Braille.
Despite his vision problems, Huxley continued his studies at Baliol College, Oxford (1913-1915), and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1916.
Due to the fact that he could not continue to study science or go to the front — and at that time there was a world war — Huxley turned to literature.
He worked at the War Office in London in 1917, and for a time taught at Eton and Repton Colleges.
The first collection of poems appeared in 1916, followed by two more editions in 1920.
In 1919-1920, Huxley was in the editorial office of the Athenaeum under the supervision of Middleton Murray, the husband of Katherine Mansfield.
He writes biographical articles, articles about architecture and painting, theater, music reviews, as well as reviews of art books.
In 1920-21, Huxley worked as a theater critic for the Westminster Gazette and as a librarian at the Chelsea Book Club.
His first novel "Yellow Chrome" — a witty criticism of society appeared in 1921.
Huxley's style, combining brilliant dialogues, social criticism and cynicism, created him a reputation as one of the most fashionable literary figures of the decade.
He was a friend of Lady Ottoline Morrell, and was a member of the Bloomsbury Circle, which included such writers as Virginia Woolf, Cleve Bell, Lytton Strachey and E. M. Forster.
Over the course of eight years, he published a dozen books, including Counterpoint (1928), a novel in which characters copied from D. Lawrence, Murray, Mansfield and the author himself are compared to orchestra instruments, and each plays a special role in life as Huxley sees it.
He spent a long time looking for a title for a new novel — he used to come up with names for things that were already finished, and not vice versa.
In the 20s, Huxley became friends with D. G. Lawrence, together they make a trip to Italy and France.
Huxley spent most of his 20s in Italy.
In the 30s, he moved to Sunery, near Toulon, and there he wrote "Brave New World", a gloomy picture of a high tech society of the future.
In this book, he turns the theory of scientific optimism of H. G. Wells upside down.
The development of science and cultural changes — mass production, which revolutionized industry, airplane travel, romanticized by Charles Linberg and Amelia Earhart, behavioral psychology and experiments in genetics at that time occupied people's minds and inspired.
The novel was a kind of response to a wide range of readers, in the first year more than 28 thousand copies of the book were sold in England and the USA, and throughout the 20th century it remained in the leaders in sales.
In the 30s, Huxley took an active part in the activities of the "Peace Pledge Union".
In 1937, at the age of forty three, together with guru Gerald Gerd, he moved to the United States, hoping that the climate of California would improve his deteriorating eyesight.
Here begins the philosophical period of his work, which was characterized by a more detailed examination of the human essence, interest in various mystical teachings ("The Perennial Philosophy", "After Many years" ("After Many a Summer...")
, "Time must have a stop").
Huxley meets with Krishnamurti (Jiddu Krishnamurti), they (like their wives) have a strong friendship.
The former skeptic and the former theosophist now believed that the only road to peace and spiritual truth should be subjective personal.
Huxley writes many essays as well as screenplays for films in collaboration with Christopher Isherwood.
Some of his scripts were never filmed.
The best script is considered to be for the Hollywood film "Pride and Prejudice" (1940).
He undertakes to write such scripts as "The Saga of the Forsytes", "Madame Curie".
Together with John Houseman and Robert Stevenson, he is working on the film "Jane Eyre", starring Orson Welles and Joan Fontana.
In 1953, he agrees to participate in an experiment conducted by Humphrey Osmond.
The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of mescaline on human consciousness.
Subsequently, in correspondence with Osmond, the word "psychedelic" was used for the first time to describe the influence of mescaline.
The essays "The Doors of Perception" and"Heaven and Hell" describe the observations and the course of the experiment, which the author repeated about ten times until his death.
The effect of the action of psychotropic substances affects not only his work.
So in his last novel "The Island" he described a positive utopia, which was diametrically opposed to his dystopia "Brave New World".
In 1961, he met Albert Hoffman, the inventor of LSD.
Shortly before his death, all his manuscripts were burned in a fire in his own house.
Huxley died in 1963 in Los Angeles from throat cancer.
When death was imminent, Aldous ' wife gave him an injection of LSD, which allowed him to die peacefully, avoiding convulsions and suffocation.
Aldous Huxley coined the term "futurology".
