Biography
Tutankhamun (Egypt. twtnnḫ jmn — "The living image of Amun", originally Tutankhaton — "The Living image of Aton", c. 1355-1337 BC) - a pharaoh of the XVIII dynasty of Egyptian pharaohs, who ruled in 1347-1337 BC.
During his reign, the transformations of Akhenaten were canceled, which made the pharaoh, whose rule was considered insignificant for a long time, one of the most important historical figures of ancient Egyptian history.
He became one of the most famous pharaohs and a real symbol of ancient Egyptian civilization thanks to the discovery in 1922 of his tomb, the only almost undisturbed Egyptian royal tomb.
Family
Tutankhamun is the last pharaoh of the XVIII dynasty, who is related to his predecessors.
The degree of kinship of Tutankhamun with his predecessor, Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten), has not yet been clarified.
He may have been the son of Amenhotep III and the younger brother of Akhenaten; however, it is possible that the boy Pharaoh was the son of Akhenaten by his second wife Kia.
Tutankhamun was married to Akhenaten's daughter Ankhsenpaaton (that is, in any case, he was the king's son in law), who later also changed the ending of her name to "- amon" and became called Ankhesenamon (= "Her life belongs to Amon").
Governance
Tutankhamun came to power at the age of 8-9 years (the throne name is Tutankhaton Hekaiunushema Nebheprura).
He was brought up in the spirit of atonism the cult of the Sun god Aton, introduced in Egypt by Amenhotep IV and was originally named after the new god of the country.
However, in reality, the reins of government in the country passed into the hands of two educators and regents of the young pharaoh — Aye and Horemheb, former associates of Akhenaten, who, after the death of this pharaoh, anathematized the teachings of their former patron (references to him were exterminated in every possible way, as before Thutmose III destroyed references to Hatshepsut; the very name of Akhenaten was hollowed out of cartouches), and Akhenaten himself was called nothing else than "The Apostate from El Amarna".
Aye was once a high dignitary (vizier) and one of the apologists of the cult of Aten, but under Tutankhamun he was already a priest of Amun.
Horemheb was a prominent military leader, obviously not content with the fact that as a result of Akhenaten's pacifist policy, the Eastern Mediterranean fell away from Egypt.
Under Tutankhamun, a religious and political turn took place no less sharply than under his predecessor, but now it was marked by the revival of traditional Egyptian culture and the return of the Theban priesthood to rule the country (nevertheless, most of them come from the military and middle classes, who occupied high positions under the Akhnat
they retained their influence in state affairs — the priests and the military finally managed to get along at the royal court).
Akhetaton, the capital of Akhenaten, was destroyed and forgotten until it was discovered by Napoleon's troops and explored in the XIX century.
The capital was nominally returned to Thebes, but in reality Memphis was the city where Tutankhamun spent most of his reign.
Due to the election of Memphis by the king as his de facto capital, numerous tombs of nobles were built in the Saqqara necropolis, among which the tombs of the warlord Horemheb, the treasurer and the architect Maya, known for their elegant relief decoration, stand out.
In Thebes, the tomb of the nobleman Khevi, who was at that time the royal governor of Nubia, is well preserved.
Under Tutankhamun, under the leadership of the military commander Horemheb, for the first time after the collapse of the "Egyptian empire" of the Tutmosids, successful military campaigns were carried out in Nubia and the regions of Asia close to Egypt.
In addition to restoration work in many sanctuaries, by order of Tutankhamun, the decoration of the processional colonnade of Amenhotep III in the Luxor temple was completed, a small temple of Horon was built in Giza; in Nubia, the giant temple complex of Amenhotep III in Soleb was completed, the temple of Amun in Kava and the sanctuary of the most deified Tutankhamun in Faras were erected.
The funeral temple of the king, decorated with beautiful polychrome sandstone colossi, was located in Thebes near Medinet Abu; later the temple was usurped by the king's successors — Aye and Horemheb (the latter included Tutankhamun in the list of heretics consigned to oblivion).
Circumstances of death
Tutankhamun is the pharaoh of the New Kingdom, who died at a very early age.
At the time of his death, he was 18 (or 19) years old.
Such an early death of the pharaoh was for a long time considered sufficient reason to consider it unnatural.
It followed from this that Tutankhamun could have been killed on the orders of his own regent Aye, who became the new pharaoh after Tutankhamun's death.
However, the latest research conducted in 2005 brought to the fore the assumptions about the death of Tutankhamun as a result of trauma (open leg fracture.
On March 8, 2005, the leading Egyptian Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, who led the study, announced the results of the examination of the mummy of Tutankhamun.
In 15 minutes, using the Siemens SOMATOM® Emotion 6 CT, more than 1,700 three dimensional images of the mummy were obtained, which dispelled most of the established opinions about the death of the young pharaoh.
No traces of a traumatic brain injury were found, and the hole in the skull was obviously the result of the actions of the Paraschite priests treating the mummy.
The results of previous X ray studies of the pharaoh's body were also refuted, attributing to him a severe degree of scoliosis.
The pharaoh's skull is somewhat elongated, which confirms his kinship with Akhenaten and contradicts the assumptions about the latter's susceptibility to Marfan syndrome.
Finally, after consulting with Italian and Swiss colleagues, Egyptian experts came to the conclusion that the cause of Tutankhamun's death was gangrene, which rapidly progressed after a leg injury (fracture).
As evidence, serious injuries on the left femur are cited, previously attributed to the inept handling of the mummy by the participants of the Carter expedition.
The tomb of Tutankhamun (object KV62) is located in the Valley of the Kings, and this is the only almost undisturbed tomb that has reached scientists in its original form, although it was opened twice by tomb thieves.
It was discovered in 1922 by two Englishmen the Egyptologist Howard Carter and the amateur archaeologist Lord Carnarvon.
Numerous ornaments have been preserved in the tomb, as well as a sarcophagus with the mummified body of the pharaoh.
In the eyes of historians, Tutankhamun remained a little known minor pharaoh until the beginning of the twentieth century.
Moreover, doubts were even expressed about the reality of its existence.
Therefore, the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun is considered as the greatest event in the history of archeology.
Nevertheless, the reign of Tutankhamun really did not differ in anything significant, apart from the rejection of atonism.
Howard Carter has the following words about the young pharaoh: "In the current state of our knowledge, we can say with certainty only one thing: the only remarkable event in his life was that he died and was buried."
On November 4, 1922, the entrance to the KV62 tomb was cleared, and the seals on the doors were intact, which gave serious hopes for the possibility of making the largest archaeological discovery of the century.
At the entrance to the tomb of Ramesses VI (the builders of the tomb of this Ramesside, apparently, filled up the way to the tomb of Tutankhamun, which explains its relative safety).
On November 26, 1922, Carter and Carnarvon became the first people in three millennia to descend into the tomb (robbers who could visit the tomb obviously descended into it during the twentieth dynasty).
After a long excavation, on February 16, 1923, Carter finally descended into the burial chamber of the tomb (the "Golden Hall"), where the sarcophagus of the pharaoh himself was located.
Among the utensils and other objects buried with the pharaoh, many examples of art were found that bear the stamp of the influence of the art of the Amarna period.
The owner of the discovered treasures, then an almost unknown young ruler of Egypt, immediately turned into an object of increased attention, and the phenomenal discovery not only made his name well known, but also caused another surge of renewed interest in all traces of Egyptian civilization in the modern world.
Lord George Carnarvon, who financed the excavations, died on April 5, 1923 at the Continental Hotel in Cairo from pneumonia, but almost immediately there were hoaxes around his death (it was even said about "blood poisoning due to a razor wound" or "a mysterious mosquito bite").
In the following years, the press fueled rumors about the "curse of the pharaohs", which allegedly led to the death of the discoverers of the tomb, numbering up to 22 "victims of the curse", 13 of whom were directly present at the opening of the tomb.
Among them were mentioned such prominent specialists as the largest American Egyptologist Professor James Henry Brasted, the author of the grammar of the Egyptian language Sir Alan Henderson Gardiner, Professor Norman de Harris Davis.
However, the facts show that the evidence of the "curse" was adjusted to achieve a newspaper sensation: the absolute majority of the participants of the Carter expedition reached an advanced age, and their average life expectancy is 74.4 years.
Thus, J. G. Brasted was already 70 years old, N. G. Davies was 71, and A. Gardiner was 84 years old.
Howard Carter, who directly supervised all the work in the tomb, it would seem that he should have fallen the first victim of the "curse of the pharaoh", but he died the last — in 1939 at the age of 66.
One of the popular theories trying to analyze the death of the expedition participants connects it with a fungus or other microorganism that was in the tomb, which explains, in particular, the fact that the asthmatic Lord Carnarvon died first.
