Early career
Evgeny started skating at the age of four.
The boy was given to figure skating to strengthen his poor health.
His first coach was Tatiana Skala.
Then he continued to train under the guidance of Mikhail Makoveev, with whom at the age of seven he won his first competition the Crystal Skate tournament.
When Evgeny was 11 years old, the Sports Palace in Volgograd was closed.
Forced to choose between quitting figure skating or separating from his family, he went alone to St. Petersburg to train in the group of the legendary Alexey Mishin, who had already trained the 1994 Olympic champion Alexey Urmanov and the future Olympic champion Alexey Yagudin.
Evgeny faced difficulties during his first year in St. Petersburg, being a thousand kilometers away from his parents and sister, living in a communal apartment, in conditions unsuitable for his young age.
Yevgeny's parents were forced to work extra to support their son, and several times there was a question about his return home.
But the will and the dream were stronger.
Over time, Zhenya's mother moved to St. Petersburg with him, and with the moral and material support of coach Alexey Mishin, life began to improve, so that Evgeny could focus on training.
Plushenko made rapid progress on the international stage under the tutelage of Mishin.
In 1997, at the age of 14, he won the World Junior Championship in Seoul (South Korea).
The following year, 1998, just at the age of 15, he sensationally won a bronze medal at the World Adult Championship, causing a great stir around his name from the judges and commentators: everyone started talking about a new "miracle boy".
His ascent continued during 1998 and 1999, but the real breakthrough came in the following season 1999/2000, when Eugene won 7 competitions out of 9 and established himself as a force to be reckoned with.
He was already the current and two time champion of Russia, won the Grand Prix Final for the first time and his first European champion title.
The 2000/2001 season was the most successful at that time in his career.
Evgeny again won the Russian, European and Grand Prix Finals and was the favorite at the 2001 World Championships in Vancouver (Canada).
There, he performed two programs flawlessly and won his first expected world title, becoming a world champion at the age of just 18.
The 2001/2002 Olympic season began with difficulties.
Evgeny won all the competitions and reached the Grand Prix Final, but two months before the Olympic Games, he suffered ankle and groin injuries that forced him to miss the European Championship He resumed training, and in order to better prepare for the upcoming Games, he changed the free program in a short time.
Evgeny arrived at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City (USA) as the current world champion and was the favorite, along with his compatriot Alexey Yagudin.
At the competitions, which became the brightest example of rivalry in the history of this sport, Plushenko showed a strong and risky free program to the music of Zh.
Bizet "Carmen", showing a unique cascade of a quadruple toe loop triple toe loop triple rittberger, a second quadruple jump and a combination of a triple axel oiler triple flip.
As a result, he took second place, winning his first Olympic silver medal.
During the new Olympic cycle preceding the 2006 Olympic Games, Evgeny took the world of figure skating by storm, never missing the podium and winning 19 competitions out of 21.
He took silver only twice.
In the Final of the 2004 Grand Prix, despite the brilliant rental of the free program, he took second place due to the fact that he violated the rule of the international judging system IJS (which was applied for the first time that season), which prohibited the performance of more than two cascades of jumps.
(Starting from the 2003-2004 season, three jump combinations are allowed in the free program).
Plushenko also took silver at the 2004 European Championships before winning his third title at the 2004 World Championships (Dortmund, Germany).
At the beginning of 2005, Plushenko was plagued by serious injuries, nevertheless, this season he won the Grand Prix Final, the Russian and European championships.
However, at the World Championships in Moscow, having performed in the qualifying round and in the short program, he was forced to withdraw from the competition due to a serious injury that required surgery on the inguinal rings, which he underwent in Munich (Germany) in the spring of 2005, just a year before the 2006 Olympics.
On June 18, 2005, Yevgeny married Maria Ermak.
Their son Yegor was born on June 15, 2006.
They divorced in February 2008.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin (Italy), Plushenko was the undisputed favorite, thanks to his dominance in the sport over the previous four years and the absolute superiority over his rivals achieved under the new judging system.
He already owned 7 out of 10 top results under this system.
He performed a short program "Tosca" to the music of Giacomo Puccini and was ahead by 10 points over his closest rival, setting a new ISU record (90.66).
The rental of any program was as strong and also received the highest score (167.67).
He skated to the music of Nino Rota's "the Godfather" specially arranged for him by violinist Edvin Marton.
Evgeny crushed his rivals, eventually receiving the sum of 258.33 (27 points ahead of the silver medalist), and realized his childhood dream of becoming an Olympic champion.
2006-2008: Break in competitions
Plushenko took a break from competitions in the post Olympic season.
He said that the missed season will help him to rest and recover from knee injuries sustained during 8 years of continuous competition.
Evgeny performed in ice shows, organized his own tours "Golden Ice Stradivari" and "Kings On Ice" ("Kings of Ice"), with whom he toured throughout Russia and Europe, led numerous television shows, participated in the political life of St. Petersburg.
Evgeny was also one of the Sochi 2014 ambassadors who played an important role in Russia's obtaining the right to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games – Russia's application was granted on July 4, 2007 in Guatemala.
In 2008, Plushenko, together with violinist Edwin Marton, took part in Dima Bilan's number during the winning performance with the song "Believe" at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade (Serbia).
On stage, Plushenko was skating on an artificial surface.
Seeing the low results of Russian figure skaters at the 2007 World Championships (which were the worst since 1960), Plushenko was concerned that Russia was losing its dominant status in figure skating, and announced his return to the sport, which finally took place in the 2009/2010 season.
2009: Return to sports
In March 2009, Plushenko announced the resumption of training under the guidance of his permanent coach Alexey Mishin in order to prepare for the 2010 Olympic Games.
On September 12, 2009, he married Yana Rudkovskaya, director of a music production company, owner of beauty salons and fashion boutiques.
Evgeny was motivated by the desire to become a two time Olympic champion.
The return to international competitions, expected by his fans and fans of figure skating, took place on October 23, 2009 at the State Enterprise "Rostelecom Cup".
He took the lead after the short program with a score of 82.25 and won the free skate with a score of 158.40.
As a result, he won the gold medal with a total of 240.65.
At the 2010 Russian Championships, Plushenko received 100.09 for the short program and 171.50 for the free program, winning the national championship for the eighth time with a total of 271.59 points.
At the 2010 European Championships in Tallinn (Estonia), Evgeny set a new world record in the short program (91.30) and won his sixth European title with a total score of 255.39 points.
At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver (Canada), Evgeny won the short program, skating to the music of X. Rodrigo "Aranjuez" , with a score of 90.85, thus breaking his Olympic record set in Turin in 2006.
In the free skate, Plushenko skated to Edwin Marton's "Tango Amore" and took second place in a tense struggle, as a result winning his second Olympic silver medal with a total score of 256.36 points.
He became the first representative of men's single skating in modern history to win medals at three consecutive Olympic Games.
2011: The King of Comebacks
Plushenko said that returning to the competition at a high level is an extremely difficult task, both physically and psychologically.
Nevertheless, after a break of almost two years and knee surgery, which required a long rehabilitation, he resumed training in the fall of 2011.
His second comeback began with the 2012 Russian Championship, held in December 2011, where he won and became a nine time champion of Russia.
The 2012 European Championship in Sheffield (Great Britain) was the first international start after the Vancouver Olympics in 2010.
In the qualifying round and the short program, Evgeny skated with knee and neck injuries, which forced him to exclude his signature jump a quadruple toe loop from the short program ("Storm", Yanni's composition).
However, in the free program, riding to the song "Roxanne's Tango" (the soundtrack of the film "Moulin Rouge!", edited by Edwin Marton), overcoming pain, Plushenko flawlessly performed all the elements, including a quadruple and seven triple jumps.
The audience gave him a standing ovation, and he triumphantly won the seventh European champion title with a score of 176.2 (total score 261.23), which is his personal best and a European record.
In November 2012, Evgeny underwent an operation for heat treatment of vertebral hernias.
He resumed work on the quads only three days before the 2013 Russian Championship (Sochi).
Despite this, Plushenko successfully completed the quadruple jumps in both programs and won his tenth national title.
On January 6, 2013, his second son Alexander was born.
Unfortunately, Evgeny withdrew from the 2013 European Championship (Zagreb, Croatia) after a short program due to a back injury.
On January 31, 2013, Evgeny underwent surgery in Tel Aviv (Israel)to replace the intervertebral disc with an implant.
In the summer of 2013, after successful rehabilitation, Evgeny resumed training and began preparing for the fulfillment of his dream to compete at the home Olympics in Sochi, at the fourth Games in his career.
On November 7, 2013, Plushenko returned to competition, at the Volvo Open Cup tournament in Riga (Latvia), he took first place with a total score of 263.25 points.
He completed 4T, 3A, 3A 3T in the free program and received the necessary technical minimum to be able to compete in Sochi.
At the 2014 Russian Championship Plushenko won the short program and became the second in the free skate.
As a result, he finished second, losing the national championship for the first time since 1998, when he finished third.
Having received an offer to be the flag bearer of the Russian team at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, Yevgeny said that it was a great honor for him, but he could not accept the offer due to the schedule of the competition.
At the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Plushenko competed in the short and free programs of the figure skating team tournament.
He took second place in the short program ("Roxanne's Tango" arranged by Edwin Marton) with a personal best of 91.39 points.
In the free program, he took first place ("The Best of Plushenko", a medley of the best programs, arranged by Edwin Marton) with a score of 168.20, winning 19 points for the team.
Russia won the team gold, beating its nearest competitor, Canada, by 10 points.
Thus, Plushenko became the owner of the second gold and the fourth Olympic medal in total, repeating the record for the number of Olympic awards in men's figure skating.
It was the first gold medal of Russia at the home Olympics.
Struggling with a back injury sustained in training, Plushenko was forced to withdraw from the individual tournament in the warm up before the short program on February 13, 2014.
March 3, 2014 at the Ramat Aviv Clinic (Tel Aviv, Israel) Evgeny underwent a second operation.
The broken screw was removed, as well as the rest of the screws that supported the spine.
In the summer of 2014, Evgeny returned to the ice, performing on a tour of Japan and China.
In the autumn of the same year, Evgeny performs in his show "Kings on Ice" and is preparing a new project - a world tour with the ice show "Snow King" (Snow King) - a fairy tale for children and the whole family.
When asked by journalists about participating in the fifth Olympiad in 2018, Yevgeny answers: "Who knows, everything is possible…"
Progress
During his entire career, Plushenko did not get into the top three winners only once since he began competing in adult competitions in 1997.
He tried to move figure skating forward, and his technical achievements, as well as sports records, are numerous.
He was the first in the world to perform the cascade of the quadruple toe loop triple toe loop double rittberger (4T 3T 2Lo) at the NHK Trophy tournament in 1999, and the most difficult cascade of the quadruple toe loop triple toe loop triple Rittberger (4T 3T 3Lo) at the "Cup of Russia" in 2002.
He is the first figure skater to successfully perform these jump combinations at the World Championships.
Plushenko was also the first to make a combination of a quadruple toe loop triple rittberger (4T 3Lo).
He is the first and only figure skater to perform the extremely complex triple axel oiler triple flip cascade (3A 1/2Lo -3F) (first shown in 2002 at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City).
So far, no one has tried to perform it at competitions.
Plushenko consistently performs a quadruple sheepskin coat at competitions with almost one hundred percent success.
It is estimated that he has successfully completed more than 100 quadruple jumps in competitions.
He also performed a quadruple salchow in 2004 in Samara (Russia) at the second stage of the Russian Cup.
Plushenko is also one of the few skaters who performed a quad rittberger and a quad lutz in training in 2001, at the Cup of Russia tournament, he completely completed the quad lutz, but slipped on landing at the last second.
In demonstration performances, he also performs complex elements.
In 2005, at the "ARD Gala", Plushenko made a cascade triple toe loop triple toe loop triple rittberger double rittberger (3T 3T 3Lo 2Lo).
At the demonstration performances of the 2006 Russian Championship, he made a cascade of six jumps (3T 3T 2Lo 2Lo 2Lo 2Lo).
At the demonstration performances of the 2006 Olympics, Evgeny said goodbye to the audience with a spectacular cascade triple axel triple toe loop triple rittberger (3A 3T 3Lo).
In November 2009, Evgeny began training the triple axel quad toe loop cascade.
Injuries prevented him from working on more complex cascades.
Evgeny is the first figure skater who performed bilman and "ring" (Donut spin) rotations at adult competitions, which were his signature elements at the beginning of his career.
At the age of 16, Plushenko became the youngest single player ever to receive a top score of 6.0 (1998 NHK Trophy tournament, score for artistry).
In total, he received 75 6.0 marks before the new judging system was introduced, under which he also received some of the highest scores for both technical elements (TES) and program components (PCS), setting records in many competitions.
So far, he holds 5 world records in the short program and 4 world records in the free program and the total of two programs.
Evgeny became the youngest medalist of the World Championship in history, winning the bronze medal at the age of 15.
Having won the European Championship for the seventh time (2012, Sheffield, Great Britain), Plushenko became the third in the number of European titles won in the entire history of men's single figure skating, he is surpassed only by the Swede Ulrich Salchow (1898-1913) with nine titles and the Austrian Karl Schaefer (1929-1936) with eight titles who performed at the dawn of this sport.
Having won gold in the team event at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi – the fourth medal at the fourth Games in a row – Evgeny became the only figure skater in modern history who won a medal at each of his Olympics: 2002 in Salt Lake City, 2006 – in Turin, 2010 – in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi.
(Swedish figure skater Gillis Grafstrom won four medals in the early period of the existence of this sport, in 1920-1932).
