RIA Novosti correspondent Ekaterina Zgirovskaya had the opportunity to take an "interview from space", in which cosmonaut of the Federal Space Agency of the Russian Federation Elena Serova told how the first half of the expedition went, how the ISS is preparing for the New Year and what is important for international cooperation in space.
At the end of September, a female cosmonaut, Elena Serova, went to the International Space Station for the first time in the history of the new Russia.
The crew of the expedition, which included Elena, planned to perform more than 50 experiments in orbit during their six month space trip.

- Elena, the New Year is coming very soon, you will celebrate it on the ISS.
How do you plan to spend it, because in space you can celebrate a holiday during all the days that the New Year is walking on Earth?
- Just like on Earth, with a Christmas tree and gifts, as well as a delicious festive table.
We will celebrate the New Year 16 times!
— At the pre flight press conference, you said that a Christmas tree would be sent to the ISS and you would dress it up with special space decorations that are stored at the station.
What are these special orbital toys?
— These are ordinary toys, only they are not glass, but soft.
— What is the most important gift you are waiting for for the New Year?
A gift from my daughter?
From her husband?
— I never expect gifts.
I like to make them myself.
Before the flight, I carefully chose gifts for everyone who is currently on board the ISS.
And the most important gift for me will be joyful and happy faces for Christmas and New Year.
— You have completed half of your space mission.
How do you assess its results at this stage?
Is everything going according to plan?
- Absolutely correct.
Everything is going according to the flight program.
We work with full dedication.
And the results will be evaluated by specialists on Earth when we return home.
— How is your experiment on shooting the Earth's surface with the coordinate reference "VIZIR", developed by domestic specialists, going?
What is its peculiarity?
How does this happen?
— This is a unique experiment.
Its peculiarity is that I can take a picture of any object on Earth and specialists will know the coordinates of this object absolutely accurately.
Or another task.
You need to remove a hard to recognize object, but you know its coordinates.
The voice system leads me to him.
I can, without looking at the lens, perform the most accurate photography of absolutely any object.
— Are you not upset that you were not given the task of going into outer space?
— I never get upset.
As they say, man suggests, and God disposes.
— Recently, there has been a lot of talk that Russia should withdraw from cooperation on the ISS.
Do you think that the work in orbit is better done by an international crew or in the circle of compatriots?
Is it worth completing such a powerful international project?
After all, the work of representatives of different countries in space is also an exchange of experience and cultural exchange.
We are not talking about the completion of international cooperation, but about the fact that each machine has its own service life.
Many people are now wondering why the Mir station stopped working.
Yes, because the station had to be repaired non stop, it worked much longer than planned.
She has worked herself out.
If you have a car that is breathing hard, what will you do?
That's right, buy another one that you can drive and that will meet the safety criteria.
The Mir station allowed us to accumulate invaluable experience, thanks to which our specialists and scientists created the ISS station.
And I also want to recall the words of the cat Matroskin from the cartoon "Prostokvashino": "Joint work for my benefit unites".
— It was also recently reported that Russia will create its own domestic orbital station.
In your opinion, is it necessary for each space power to have its own "embassy"in space?
— I really hope that in the future there will be no borders in space, as there are now at the ISS station.
— If after this expedition you have another opportunity to go into orbit, whether it is the ISS or the Russian national Comic station, will you fly?
- Yes, this is my job.
- In the spring, the crew of cosmonauts and astronauts will go to the ISS on an annual flight.
Would you agree to such a long business trip?
- I think so.
I feel great here.
There is an opportunity to constantly communicate with family and friends.
I even manage to do parenting on the phone.
I have a family that I can rely on.
And time runs very fast, because we are constantly busy with work.
— How do you feel about the idea of space tourism?
Is it useful?
What is its main advantage?
— If this project is in demand, and also brings income to the treasury, why not.
— Next year, the famous singer Sarah Brightman will go to the ISS for a week as a tourist.
Will a flight on a spaceship to the ISS, for example, affect her vocal abilities, because this is a great stress for the body?
— My flight did not affect my vocal data: I did not sing better.
— If you had the opportunity to conduct a tour of the ISS for a tourist, where would you start?
— I would treat you to a bag of tea, and we would enjoy the views from the porthole together.
— What can I do for a traveler after visiting the station?
After all, a week long tour is quite a long time.
What tasks can be defined for a tourist on the ISS?
— All tourists, as a rule, have their own program, which they try to fulfill in this short period of time.
They are not flying to the station for the sake of idle curiosity.
Many of them conducted their own experiments and experiments.
— In your blog on the Roscosmos website, you wrote that you can provide first aid on the ISS – take blood, take an ECG, judging by the photo, and also do an indirect heart massage.
How does it all happen in zero gravity?
— We can provide emergency medical care in the same way as on Earth.
This is what we are taught in the preparation process.
There are no medical specialists here at the station.
Therefore, we restore our skills on board the ISS with a certain frequency.
As for weightlessness, everything is provided in order to correctly fix yourself and the victim at such moments.
For example, with the help of special belts, if we are talking about indirect heart massage.
In other cases, we fix ourselves by catching our feet on the handrails, if we need to take a blood test or do an ECG.
— Does blogging and sending photos and videos to Earth require some special "space Internet"?
How does it work?
Do files reach the Ground quickly?
How do video conferences take place from orbit?
— Firstly, the possibility of video conferences and sending letters is possible only when we have a connection with the Earth.
This is a special communication channel.
The Earth gets all our information pretty quickly.
Secondly, as for the organization of video conferences, if we are talking about private conferences, they are organized by the Earth.
To do this, we need to open a special program on the computer and install a mini camera on it.
If we organize a large video conference, we take one of the professional video cameras and organize its connection to the special equipment that is on board.
— In your blog, you told a wonderful story about a sprouted apple seed at the station.
How does a tree grow?
Would you like to plant, for example, a space lemon?
Or something exotic, like avocado?
- Surprisingly, it grows only with the help of water and sunlight.
I sometimes "walk" him at the porthole.
You gave me a wonderful idea about the lemon.
We have a lemon.
I'll try to germinate it.
They donot supply us with avocados.
— It is known that in zero gravity, a person's body lengthens – he grows.
And how are things with such an urgent problem for a woman as weight – is there a chance to lose weight in space or vice versa?
— It all depends on how the cosmonaut does sports during the expedition.
I, for example, have lost a lot of weight.
And many cosmonauts and astronauts return to Earth very built up.
After all, our health directly depends on physical activity.
I mean the loss of calcium and the state of the cardiovascular system.
In zero gravity, the heart does not need to drive the blood with such force as on Earth, if you do not force it to work at full power.
The vessels begin to get lazy.
Calcium is actively excreted from the body.
Imagine what will happen to such an astronaut when he lands.
Intensive daily physical activity is necessary to return to good physical shape.
This is the key to our health.
— Recently there was information that a law may be adopted that in a few years it will be possible to work in Russia only in the specialty.
You are an engineer and economist by education, but in fact you are an astronaut.
Isnot it a shame that with this outcome of affairs, many people may lose the opportunity to find a romantic profession, because not everyone comes to cosmonauts right from school?
— I'm not offended.
I work by profession.
I graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute, the Aerospace Faculty.
Nevertheless, I believe that there should always be a choice.
And not only engineers work in space, but also scientists from various fields of science and medicine.
The knowledge that astronauts possess is simply colossal.
These are universal people.
Here, most likely, the ability to quickly learn and memorize huge amounts of information is important.
Everything depends on the person.
And it makes no sense to put such restrictions.
For example, one of the MAI graduates works well at the Institute of Biomedical Problems (Institute of Biomedical Problems – ed.), bringing benefits to his country.
— What is the situation with security in space?
Over the past year, the Aerospace Defense Forces have warned six times about dangerous approaches of the ISS with space objects.
What should I do in the event of such an incident?
— It's very simple.
Specialists on Earth track all space debris and space objects that may collide with the station, and if we are in danger, ballistics specialists calculate the trajectory of these objects and the parameters of the orbit change necessary to divert the station from a collision with them.
— How should you react if you see something foreign approaching the module through the window of the station?
- Calm and reasonable.
— For the first time, two women from different space federations gathered on the ISS (previously, only American women were couples).
How do you spend your leisure time together, interact?
Is there no easy competition?
Is it possible to make friends with two girls in space?
— We work here, and we are not engaged in competition, just like our male colleagues.
First of all, we cooperate.
The atmosphere here is very friendly.
Every Friday evening we organize joint dinners, discuss something, joke, laugh, remember different stories from life.
— How do you feel about the fact that many films about space have appeared again recently: "Gravity", "Interstellar", "Gagarin the first in space" and others.
A number of them tell about real events, a kind of artistic historical chronicle, and some of them are pure fiction.
But people watch these fantastic films about space and think that everything is really like that.
— I was very pleased with the domestic film about Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin.
I wish there were more such films that inspire, teach us and our children what qualities you need to have in order to become a real person.
I also love science fiction films that were shot back in Soviet times.
As for the foreign film industry, I think that there are not so many high quality products in terms of spirituality and morality now.
Any movie should teach something, instruct, and not just "tickle" the nerves under popcorn.
— We started with the fact that the New Year is coming soon, and I would like to end the conversation on the same joyful note.
What would you wish Earthlings in the new year?
- Love for one's neighbor, happiness and well being.
RIA Novosti expresses its gratitude for the assistance in conducting an interview with the head of the press service of Roscosmos, Irina Zubareva.
