History of online multiplayer games
How did it all start?
Giants of the online RPG industry Lineage 2 and WoW, Counter Strike and Battlefield, strategies like Travian ?
And it all started with a poor student (something like the history of the creation of Facebook, only this student remained so poor), who in 1978 began the development of M .
U. D – - a multiplayer game based on the Dungeon and Dragons board game.
The game was simple to the point of impossibility: know yourself, swing your character to the level of a "wizard" and then, becoming immortal, control other players.
The game did not live long, but it left a trace behind it and more long term projects have already followed it.
One of these games was Ultima Online.
In 1997, Richard Garriot and a team of developers created this brilliant game that has lived for more than 9 years and remains relevant for fans and an example for other online games.
Ultima was different in that there were not just constant battles with mobs and passing boring standard quests (although this was also enough), but a real medieval world reigned in which real players lived and dealt with problems that would worry you in ordinary life: they built a house, bred pets.
But all this is in the Middle Ages and with real players.
This highlight has taken root and gained popularity so much that hundreds of games still copy the content of Ultima, hundreds of players continue to play this game.
After seeing the success of Ultima, hundreds of developers began to come up with new online games.
But either they did not take root, or they were a bad copy of the original, or no one could stand up to competition with Ultima, but in the end, there was no replacement for this game.
But in 1998, the first real time multiplayer strategy appeared, probably known to all self respecting players.
StarCraft hit the shelves of stores and eventually became a cult project.
It was here that the signs of an online strategy first appeared.
Castles were built, battles were arranged with whole armies bought for resources, and all this with real players.
If Ultima became the progenitor of all MMORPGs, then StarCraft of all MMORTS .
In the same years, browser games begin to appear.
The experience of Ultima was not in vain, many of them are real life simulators with a combat orientation.
One of the most famous browser projects and one of the first to appear was Fight Club.
It was developed in 2002.
This project is nothing more than battles between real players in text mode.
You choose which part of the body you block, which ones you attack, as a result, the enemy and you run out of life from blows.
The game also had a social component, but the browser game was still far from Ultima with its client.
Literally 2 years later, the world was shocked by two giant projects, which immediately gained huge popularity.
The Lineage 2 and WoW games immediately conquered the audience with their incredibly beautiful graphics and a huge number of features, compared to the old Ultima by that time.
They had everything that a user of that time needed: professions, capturing castles, battles, learning skills, pumping weapons, a social component, etc.
Both games immediately became wildly popular and still compete with each other.
It was these games that became the progenitors of Aion, Perfect World and other MMORPGs that try to resemble these projects.
At the same time, in 2004, the developers of the cult game Half Life did not even think about multiplayer games.
Purely for the experiment, they created an addition to their brainchild back in 2000, which after 4 years received the status of a multi user.
In this addition, terrorists and counter terrorists fought among themselves on the maps.
The addition was called Counter Strike and soon became the progenitor of all known shooters in multiplayer mode.
Of course, there were games of similar themes before it, like Team Fortress or Doom, but they could not get more popular than Counter Strike, there was nothing special about them that attracted an audience.
The peak of the creation of MMO games was in 2007+ years.
Dozens of online games are created only in one year, and today hundreds are created.
Most of them are similar to the first successful projects and do not deviate from them in any way.
Browser games copy each other, client games do not lag behind them.
And only those who go their own way, gaining a kind of zest, leave a mark in the history of the development of multiplayer games, creating a new branch, which will be followed by thousands of future projects.
