He graduated in 1988 from the Leningrad, now St. Petersburg Suvorov Military School[4], in 1992 he graduated from the Chernihiv Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots.
Then Roman Yuryevich served in the military until he was enrolled in the cosmonaut squad.

Prior to that, he underwent general space training from January 16, 1998 to November 26, 1999.[3]

He is qualified as a military pilot of the 3rd class[3].
He was part of the backup crews three times: ISS 9, ISS 11 and ISS 15.
Finally, in July 2008, he was appointed to the main crew of the 20th expedition to the ISS as the commander of the Soyuz TMA 15 spacecraft, on which he and the rest of the crew went to the ISS on May 27, 2009.[3][5]
He returned to Earth on December 1, 2009.
The flight duration was 187 days, 20 hours, 40 minutes, 41 seconds.
On December 19, 2012, he flew into space for the second time as the commander of the Soyuz TMA 07M spacecraft.
By the order of the head of the CPC dated November 5, 2014, he was dismissed from the post of instructor of the test cosmonaut.
The reason for this was the decision of the Main Medical Commission (MMC) of April 22, 2014 on the unfitness of Romanenko for special training for health reasons.
He remained at the post of deputy commander of the cosmonaut squad of the CPC.
