A guide to the Doctor Who series and a recap of the last six seasons in screenshots Anton Tretyak30 August 2012

On September 1, a new season of the cult science fiction series "Doctor Who"will start in the UK and the States.
At the first glance, the show becomes scary: it has been running since 1963 and includes almost 800 episodes, inside of which there is a complex world with incredible creatures and strange terminology.
It seems that there is no point in taking it up in 2012, but this is not the case.
For those who are only cautiously looking at" Doctor Who " or do not know anything yet, Look At Me in a question and answer form explains why this series should be watched today and from which side to approach it.
What's it?
Doctor Who is a BBC TV show about exciting adventures in time and space; the longest science fiction series in the history of television, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary next year.
The first seasons of the series were black and white and looked like not very interesting theatrical productions.
Over time, color and drive appeared, the stories became more and more twisted.
However, every year the viewers were less interested in the series, and in 1989 (at that time 26 seasons were released), new series stopped being released.
In 1996, the British, together with the Americans, made a TV movie that was supposed to give an impetus to the resumption of the series.
But the film turned out to be quite average, so the idea of shooting new episodes was abandoned.
Only in 2005, the management of the BBC gave the TV show the green light again.
The numbering of the seasons began anew — everything shot before 1989 is considered to be a classic "Doctor Who".
A distinctive feature of the series is special effects made at home.
What kind of Doctor is this anyway?
Is this a series about doctors?
An alien who has seen a lot from a distant planet, who asks to call himself a Doctor.
In the old seasons, he was quite arrogant, but over time he became softer.
The main occupation is the constant rescue of residents of different planets who are in trouble (of course, among the earthlings, the inhabitants of the UK are his priority).
The doctor is incredibly active, at the same time funny and tragic, a little shifted on himself and comes to the rescue of everyone who believes in him.
He fights evil in the world without a gun, preferring to act with words, charm and other non violent methods.
During the entire time that the series was on the screen, the Doctors managed to replay eleven different actors — to the relief of the writers, when the hero gets too old or even dies, he can regenerate himself anew.
Since 2005, the Doctor was a smiling David Tennant, who wore suits and walked in sneakers.
His hero fell into the hearts of girls on both sides of the screen, charmed with mumbling and fit well into any society.
In 2010, the series was rebooted — the project team changed, the filming technique changed and Matt Smith became the eleventh Doctor.
His angular hero is a dandy in a tweed jacket and a bow tie ("Butterflies are cool!"), even more crazy and fixated on himself.

How does the Doctor travel?
The Doctor moves through time and space on his TARDIS spaceship — from the outside, however, it looks like an ordinary blue police box from the 60s, which is "bigger inside than outside".
The TARDIS was released a very long time ago, so it tends to mess up at the wrong time and show character.
It is true that there are a lot of rooms inside it, but usually the action takes place at a circular control panel consisting of randomly scattered tubes, levers, buttons of various shapes and sizes and other mechanical devices.
There are no portholes in the TARDIS, so you can see what is going on overboard either on a small monitor (but it's hard to see there), or simply by pulling on the entrance wooden door and stepping into the unknown.

And all this alone?
Isnot he bored?
Usually not, because the Doctor likes to delight people and practice wit on others.
The lucky ones who got on board (most of them are brave girls) help the Doctor to fight the collapse of the Universe and try not to die at the same time.
Every passenger of the TARDIS understands that the journey will not be eternal, and once you have to say goodbye to the amazing Doctor forever.
Over the half century history of the series, the company of the main character was made up of more than 35 people.
The Doctor's constant companions today are a determined girl Amy and a timid young man Rory.

Okay, who are the bad guys here?
Everyone who wants to make the world bad.
Usually these are aggressive aliens who want to harm people and their like.
The Doctor's most sworn enemies are one eyed Daleks, like huge armored salt shakers on wheels; emotionless creatures who like to talk to the enemy.
Permanent exiles, usually loudly shouting orders in a metallic voice, their trademark remark is a heart rending "Exterminate!".
There are also enough other characteristic branded monsters in the series.
At the same time, recently in Doctor Who, which works with all possible genres, there are more and more visualized human fears.
So, the main screenwriter of the series Steven Moffat today likes to use monsters not caricatured scary, but frightening with their simplicity.
For example, it was he who invented crying angels, blinking in the presence of which is deadly dangerous.

I understand nothing.
Where should I start watching the series?
There are two options.
The first is from the relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, but it will be much more difficult to get involved.
Therefore, we advise you to choose another option — to start watching the series from the fifth season (2010).
In the first episode of this season, the last regenerated Doctor, played by Matt Smith, falls into the orphan's garden.
Since, as noted above, it was then that a new team came to work on the series, then for this episode the authors of the series gave their best to meet the expectations of loyal viewers who were alarmed by the fate of the project.
Along the way, important plot details will be repeated, so it will not be difficult to understand what's what.
In addition, it is in the fifth and sixth seasons that through lines, big riddles and a growing sense of anxiety appear from series to series.
After watching the fifth, sixth and beginning seventh seasons, you can move on to the first (2005), then get acquainted with the 1996 film.
If you want more after that, then you should watch the classic Doctor Who (1963-1989).

All this does not strike my imagination.
Do the authors have some other trump card in their pocket?
Well, for example, music: they approach it thoroughly here.
In the classic "Doctor Who", music by specially invited composers was played, something was taken from the archive, and fragments of popular songs were also used.
After the relaunch in 2005, the music for the series was performed by the BBC Welsh National Orchestra, so the fiction in Doctor Who sounds great.
A total of six albums have been released since the relaunch.
In addition, the music from the series is often played live by British orchestras, and you will not believe it, both adults and children come to these concerts.
I listened to you and watched all 784 episodes.
Now I'm a fan, but how can I continue to live?
I want more!
Now you can start the spin offs.
The most notable of them are the TV series "Torchwood" and "The Adventures of Sarah Jane".
If you can watch" Doctor Who "at any age, then the related" Torchwood " (Torchwood is the rearranged letters from Doctor Who) is made exclusively for adults.
Here they tell about the work of the secret Torchwood Institute, which was founded by Queen Victoria after meeting with the Doctor and the werewolf.
Well, extraterrestrial life forms are treated much more aggressively here than in the main series.
But "The Adventures of Sarah Jane" was filmed for teenagers, starring one of the Doctor's long time companions.

I am a long time fan of the series, and I am reading this post because I canot pass by the name of my favorite show.
Tell me, am I the only one?
And what should I do?
First of all, you should subscribe to the daily updated page of the series on Facebook, and you will see a couple of million like minded people (we are not exaggerating).
For all of you, there is a section of the series on the website of Radiotimes, the largest British magazine about radio and television.
The series also has its own Doctor Who Magazine, which has been published since 1979.
If the endless information flow about the series or communication with its fans does not seem enough to you, then you can surround yourself with objects that create a complete illusion of eternal stay in the world of the Doctor.
For example, look at the ThinkGeek online store and buy a copy of the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, a small TARDIS floating in the air, and even a plush Dalek.
Even more products with detailed descriptions are collected by fans on The Doctor Who Site.
The Twitter of the showrunner of the series Steven Moffat will always help to cheer up.
Plus, the documentary program "Doctor Who: Confidential" is mandatory for viewing, where they tell in detail about the process of filming the series.
Finally, we advise you to go to the largest Russian fan site "Doctor Who" Tardisheart.
I've read it all.
But I still donot want to watch the series.
Do you have other ways of persuading?
An overview of the last six seasons in screenshots with expressive subtitles will help you understand the manner of communication of the characters of the series.
The selection contains one frame from each main series (in other words, special issues were not taken into account).

If you still donot want to watch Doctor Who after this video, then you are hopeless.
