Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in the Tuscan town of Caprese, north of Arezzo, in the family of an impoverished Florentine nobleman Lodovico Buonarroti, a city councilor.
My father was not rich, and the income from his small estate in the village was barely enough to support many children.
In this regard, he was forced to give Michelangelo to the nurse, the wife of "scarpelino" from the same village, called Settignano.
There, raised by a married couple Topolino, the boy learned to knead clay and use a chisel before reading and writing.
In 1488, Michelangelo's father accepted his son's inclinations and placed him as an apprentice in the workshop.
Thus began the flowering of genius.
Today we present you a selection of the most interesting facts about the Italian sculptor, one of the greatest masters of the Renaissance — Michelangelo Buonarroti.
1) According to the American edition of The New York Times, although Michelangelo often complained about losses, and he was often spoken of as a poor man, in 1564, when he died, his fortune was equal to tens of millions of dollars in modern equivalent.
2) A distinctive feature of Michelangelo's works is the nude figure of a man, made in the smallest details and striking in its naturalness.
However, at the beginning of his career, the sculptor did not know the features of the human body so well.
And he had to learn them.
He did this in the monastery morgue, where he examined dead people and their entrails.
3) Many of his sarcastic judgments about the works of other artists have come down to us.
Here, for example, is how he responded to someone's painting depicting the sorrow for Christ: "It is truly a sorrow to look at it."
Another creator, who painted a picture where the bull turned out best, received from Michelangelo such a comment about his work: "Every artist paints himself well."
4) One of the greatest works is the vault of the Sistine Chapel, on which he worked for 4 years.
The work is a separate fresco, representing all together a composition of huge dimensions on the ceiling of the building.
Michelangelo kept the whole picture and its individual parts in his head.
There were no preliminary sketches, etc.
During his work, he did not let anyone into the room, not even the pope.
The Lamentation of Christ, by Michelangelo Buonarotti.
St. Peter's Cathedral, Vatican City.
5) When Michelangelo finished his first "Pieta" and it was exhibited in St. Peter's Cathedral (At that time Michelangelo was only 24 years old), the author heard rumors that people's rumor attributed this work to another sculptor Cristoforo Solari.
Then Michelangelo carved on the girdle of the Virgin Mary: "This was done by the Florentine Michelangelo Buonarotti."
Later, he regretted this outburst of pride and never signed his sculptures again — this is the only one.
6) Michelangelo did not communicate with women until the age of 60.
That is why his female sculptures resemble male bodies.
It was only in his seventh decade that he met his first love and muse.
She herself was already over forty at that time, she was a widow and found solace in poetry.
7) The sculptor did not consider anyone to be his equal.
He sometimes gave in to those in power, on whom he depended, but also showed his indomitable temper in dealing with them.
According to a contemporary, he inspired fear even to popes.
Leo X said about Michelangelo: "He is terrible.
You canot deal with him."
8) Michelangelo wrote poetry:
And even Phoebus is not able to embrace the cold globe of the earth with His ray at once.
And we are even more afraid of the night hour, As a sacrament, before which the mind fades.
The night flees from the light, as from leprosy, And is protected by pitch darkness.
The crunch of a branch or the trigger click of a dry one is not to her liking — she is so afraid of the evil eye.
Fools are free to prostrate before her.
Envious as a widow queen, She is not averse to destroying fireflies.
Although prejudices are strong, a shadow is born from sunlight And turns into night at sunset.
The Tomb of Michelangelo Buonarroti in Santa Croce 9) Before his death, he burned a lot of sketches, realizing that there are no technical means for their implementation.
10) The famous statue of David was made by Michelangelo from a piece of white marble left over from another sculptor who unsuccessfully tried to work with this piece and then threw it.
11) In the winter of 1494, there was a very heavy snowfall in Florence.
The ruler of the Florentine Republic, Piero di Medici, ordered Michelangelo to sculpt a snow statue.
The artist fulfilled the order, but, unfortunately, no information has been preserved about how the snowman sculpted by Michelangelo looked like.
12) Having ascended to the papal throne, Julius II conceived the idea of building a magnificent tomb for himself.
The pontiff granted Michelangelo unlimited freedom in creativity and money.
He was carried away by the idea, and personally went to the place of marble extraction for statues — to Kararra.
Returning to Rome almost a year later, having spent a lot of money on the delivery of marble, Michelangelo found that Julius II had already cooled down to the tomb project.
And he's not going to pay the expenses!
The angry sculptor immediately abandoned everything — the workshop, blocks of marble, orders — and left Rome without the pope's permission.
13) There is the following incident in the history of art.
Michelangelo made high demands on his works and strictly judged them.
When asked what the ideal statue is, he replied: "Every statue should be designed so that it can be rolled down the mountain and not a single piece breaks off."
