The moon: where did the Earth's satellite come from
A new study published today by the authoritative scientific journal Nature has called into question the relevance of most previously existing theories about the origin of the Moon.
Until now, the most likely cause of the appearance of the satellite was considered to be the collision of a small meteorite with the Earth.
Now it turns out that the impact from the outside was much greater.
Lone wolf One of the common theories says that the Moon is a real planet that came to our system from outside and was attracted by the gravity of the Earth.
The scientific community is quite skeptical about this theory, since the Moon is not so easy to be subjected to such an influence of our planet.
However, there are also supporters of this theory among scientists: they claim that the mass of the satellite has changed in a big way due to space debris collected around it for several billion years.
According to the most fantastic theory, the Moon is nothing more than an artificial object.
It was allegedly placed near the Earth in order to collect enough data about our civilization.
Oddly enough, but this idea also did not arise from scratch.
During the landing of the American astronauts of the Apollo 18 mission, the seismograph recorded the lightest vibration of the entire planet — only a hollow sphere could give such readings.
Modern interpretation And finally, the latest theory, which is currently considered the most well founded.
After studying the samples brought from the Moon, scientists are inclined to conclude that our satellite is just a huge fragment of the Earth.
About four billion years ago, another planet, the size of Mars, hit the place where the Pacific Ocean is now located.
The broken fragment moved away for some distance and stopped, held by the gravity of the Earth.
