Band History
Formation and early years (1992-1997)
In the early nineties, Matt, Dom and Chris played in different bands at Teignmouth School.
The formation of Muse began after Matthew Bellamy became the guitarist in the Howard House band.
They got into a difficult situation when their second guitarist Phys Vandit decided to leave.
Then they asked their close friend Chris Wolstenholme to learn how to play the bass.
Since then, the band has changed a lot of names, being called Gothic Plague, Carnage Mayhem, Fixed Penalty and Rocket Baby Dolls, before becoming Muse (the enumeration is abstract, the information in different interviews differ from each other).
In 1994, under the name Rocket Baby Dolls Muse won a local "Battle of the Bands", destroying their equipment in the process of performing.
(They were "the only real rock band").Soon after, they decided not to go to university, but to immerse themselves in the musical environment.
They changed their name to Muse and started performing in local clubs like" The Cavern " in Exeter.
The first EP and Showbiz (1998-2000)
After several years of forming a metropolitan fan base, Muse played their first concerts in London and in Manchester.
The band met with Dennis Smith, the owner of Sawmills, a recording studio in a converted mill in Cornwall, in Southwest England, and signed a contract with him.
This meeting led them to their first real recordings and the release of the eponymous EP with the face of the House used in the design by the Soomill label Dangerous.
Their second EP, " Muscle Museum "(January 1999) included two versions of the title track and the songs" Sober"," Uno"," Unintended "and"Instant Messenger".
The release attracted the attention of the influential British music journalist Steve Lamacq.
Lamak, also a DJ at Radio One, who was the first to put Muse on national radio, recalls: "It was one of those interesting records that donot fit into what sounds everywhere.
It immediately received excellent feedback from listeners."
Muse themselves, although they do not deny the influence, are struggling to assert their independence.
Bellamy says, " I've been traveling around Europe a lot since I graduated from college.
It's good to be exposed to a lot of influences, in addition to a few narrow trends, which the vast majority of people are content with."
Later, Dennis Smith founded the music company Taste Media specifically for Muse (the band stayed with her for the first three albums).
This was a great success for the band, as it allowed them to preserve the individuality of their sound from the early period of their career.
Despite the success of their first EP, British record companies refused to support Muse, being concerned that the sound of Muse resembled Radiohead (from the time of "The Bends)".
Nevertheless, American Maverick Records arranged for the band to perform several shows in the United States before signing them at the end of 1998.
Upon the band's return to the UK, Taste Media signed deals with various labels in Europe and Australia.
John Leckie, who produced the aforementioned "The Bends", The Stone Roses, and The Verve, was brought in to work on Muse's first album, "Showbiz".
The album reflected the band's aggressively lyrical style, and its lyrics contained many references to the difficulties they had to overcome to establish themselves in Teignmouth.
After the release of the album, the band went on tour to support the bands Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Origin of Symmetry (2001—2002)
In November 2002, Muse started visiting the studio again, together with producers John Cornfield and Paul Reeve.
At first, three or four songs were recorded, but then the band changed the producer, and the American Rich Costey helped finish the album.
During the production of this album, the musicians experimented with various instruments, such as the church organ and the mellotron.
The sound had more of Bellamy's famous falsetto, aggressive guitar lines and keyboards.
The album clearly shows a transition from the storm of emotions that filled the previous Muse album to more balanced and subtle lyrically depressive moods.
It seems most likely that Matt had problems with self identification as a result of his sharply increased popularity.
We only know that Matt was aware of the change in the sound of the album, which eventually came out, and was very worried about how the listeners would perceive it.
Maverick felt that Bellamy's falsetto was not favorable for the release of the album on the radio, and demanded that some songs be changed for the release of the album in the United States.
The band refused and left the label, which is why the album was finally released in the United States only on September 20, 2005, after Muse signed a contract with Warner.
Muse released a live DVD, "Hullabaloo", with recordings of two consecutive concerts at Le Zenith in Paris in 2001.
Released at the same time on two CDs, the album of the same name contained B sides and an audio recording of a concert at Le Zenith.
In February 2006, Q magazine placed "Origin of Symmetry" on the 74th place in the list of the 100 greatest albums on the planet.
Absolution (2003—2005)
"Absolution" (produced by Rich Bones) was released in 2003 and debuted at the top of the UK chart.
Many songs from this album — "Time Is Running Out", "Hysteria", "Sing for Absolution", "Butterflies and Hurricanes" - became hits.
The album was originally planned to be recorded uplifting, with a powerful orchestral accompaniment.
However, several events occurred, as a result of which everything changed a lot.
Formally, according to the website MuseAndaMuse, the reason was the US and British attack on Iraq, which led to the band's decision to make a more apocalyptic and tragic sound.
For this purpose, some orchestral parts were remixed in order to dim them and add drama.
More real is just Matt's changing moods and incessant depressions.
By the way, during the same period, some professional music publications called Muse "the best rock concert band on the planet", forgetting for a while the U2 championship in this category.
Muse went on their first tour of the stadiums of the planet, which lasted about a year, during which the musicians visited Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada and France.
Five singles were released ("Time Is Running Out", "Hysteria", "Sing for Absolution", "Stockholm Syndrome" and "Butterflies and Hurricanes").
The American part of the tour began somewhat unsuccessfully, as Bellamy injured his face during a concert in Atlanta.
Muse headlined the Glastonbury Festival in June 2004.
Bellamy called this concert "the best gig of our lives".
However, the luck was overshadowed by the fact that Dom's father, Bill Howard, who was present at the festival, died of a heart attack immediately after the concert ended.
"It was almost surreal that his father died an hour later.
It didnot seem plausible.
We spent a lot of time trying to support At Home.
I think he was comforted by the fact that, at least, his father saw one of the best moments of our creativity."
Muse soon resumed their tour.
They won two MTV Europe awards, including the nomination "best alternative band" and the Q Award in the category "best concert".
The band completed the tour in January 2005.
On December 12, 2005, the DVD "Absolution Tour" was released, containing footage of the best concerts from Glastonbury 2004 to concerts at London Earls Court, Wembley Stadium and at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
Two songs, "Endlessly" and "Thoughts of a Dying Atheist", were filmed at Wembley Stadium.
The only song from the album that is not on this disc is "Falling Away With You", since it has never been performed at concerts until now.
Black Holes and Revelations (2006)
On July 2, 2006, Muse released the 4th studio album "Black Holes and Revelations".
This CD became one of the most successful in the entire history of the band: in the first week of sales, it sold more than a hundred thousand copies.
The album was released in Japan on June 28, 2006, in Europe on July 3, 2006 and in North America on July 11, 2006, and reached the top of the UK and many European charts.
In the US, the album debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 chart.
"Black Holes and Revelations" went platinum, having been sold more than a million times in Europe.
The first single from the album, "Supermassive Black Hole", was released as an audio download on May 9, 2006 and was accompanied by a music video shot by Floria Sigismondi.
On September 4, 2006, the second single, "Starlight", was released.
"Knights Of Cydonia" was released as a radio single in the US on June 13 and in the UK on November 27, 2006.
The band's tour began in North America.
After the last of the summer festivals, a tour of Europe began, including a large number of performances in the UK arenas.
The tour continued with concerts in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia in early 2007, and returned to England with grand concerts, the first at the restored Wembley Stadium on June 16 and 17.
Both concerts were recorded and released on the album HAARP, released on March 17, 2008 in the UK and on April 1 in the US.
The name is taken from the American research program HAARP, which studies the possibility of controlling the ionosphere.
In August, the band returned to the United States, where they played at Madison Square Garden in New York.
In October, they performed in Las Vegas with Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk, and Queens of the Stone Age.
The tour continued with a visit to Russia, where two concerts were given in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
In 2008, many concerts were also given.
In March, the band performed in Africa — in Dubai, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Muse played at the Rio Lisboa Festival on June 6, along with Kaiser Chiefs, The Offspring and Linkin Park.
The Resistance (2009)
In an interview given to the magazine "Rock Mag" in May 2008, and published in the July issue, Bellamy confirmed the information about the beginning of work on a new album.
Some of the songs sound in an electronic or dance key, some are more symphonic or classical.
The musicians even invited an orchestra to record them.
Matthew also stated that in order to achieve greater freedom in the sound, they will produce the album independently.
"The Resistance" was released on September 11 in Italy, Germany and Australia and the Benelux, on September 14 in the UK, and on September 15 in the US and Canada.
This is the first album that was produced by the band itself.
The mixing was handled by Mark Stent.
In the first week, 451 thousand copies of the album were sold, which became a record for the band and for the UK in general this year.
"The Resistance" debuted at number one on the charts of 19 countries and reached #3 on the US chart.
It was a better result than the previous album.
The first single, "Uprising", was released a week earlier.
To date, two singles have been released from this album — "Uprising", "Undisclosed Desires" The third single - "Resistance" - was released on February 22, 2010.
The band's resistance tour began with a concert on October 22, 2009 at the Hartwall Arena in Finland.
February March Muse will play concerts in America.
In the summer, they will also participate in many festivals, including Rock in Rio, Coachella, Glastonbury 2010.
The last announced date of the tour at the moment are concerts at Wembley Stadium on September 10 and 11, 2010, but there is evidence that in the fall of 2010 the tour will cross the ocean and return to Australia, as Bellamy said in an interview on Big Day Out 2010. [7]
In addition, a remix of the song Resistance was made by disc jockey Tiësto.
Musical style
Muse's music is eclectic, in addition to the basics of alternative rock, it absorbs elements of a variety of directions.
Among the most recognizable features of the band is an extremely high vocal (falsetto) Matt Bellamy, guitar riffs, frequent use of piano, and on later albums — orchestral arrangements.
In recent years, the band's sound has become less heavy, and the use of orchestral and piano arrangements, on the contrary, has become more frequent.
Among the most influential bands on Muse are Radiohead and Queen.
The band's first album, Showbiz, even received negative reviews in the press for "copying" Radiohead.
In addition, Bellamy is a fan of the music of the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose works he sometimes quotes in songs.
Awards
Muse have been nominated seven times at the Brit Awards, becoming a two time winner; both times in the category "Best Live Act" in 2005 and again in 2007.
The group also four times won the MTV Europe Music Awards, in the categories "Best Alternative Act" in 2004 and 2006 and "Best UK & Irish Act" in 2004 and 2007.
The album "Black Holes & Revelations" won the award for "Best British Album" at the Brit Awards and was voted best album of the MTV Europe Music Awards and NME Awards.
The NME Awards awarded the band in the "Best Live Band" categories in 2005, 2008 and 2009; "Best British Band" in 2007, 2010, 2011 and in "Best New Band" in 2000.
The Q Awards also awarded musicians as outstanding live performers; the band won in the category "Best Live Act "in 2003, 2004, and 2006, and in 2009 triumphantly took up the nomination"Best Act in the World Today".
In 2011, the band received a Grammy for " The Best Rock Album of the Year - "The Resistance".
In total, Muse has received 24 awards from 60 nominations in its history.
Also on September 25, 2008, Matthew Bellamy, Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme were awarded honorary Doctorates of Arts by the University of Plymouth.
Interesting facts
- In December 2009, the Vatican published a list of" God pleasing " musical compositions.
In this hit parade, along with Mozart and the disc of Pope Benedict XVI himself, Muse with the song "Uprising"were included.
- At one of the performances on Italian television, the musicians were forced to perform under a phonogram.
The musicians decided to express their protest by changing instruments before the performance: lead singer and guitarist Matthew Bellamy sat down at the drums, drummer Dominic Howard stood up with a bass guitar at the microphone, and bass guitarist Chris Wolstenholme took the guitar and stood at the keyboards.
After the performance, the drummer gave an interview as a frontman.
During the filming, no one suspected anything was wrong, and in this form the program went on the air.
- Not so long ago, Bellamy took the 29th place in the list of the 100 best guitarists in the world according to the magazine "Total Guitar", and his riff from "Plug In Baby", according to polls, was on the 14th position in the"Top 100 Riffs".
The same riff was marked by the almanac " Rock and Pop "of the magazine" Q magazine " among the best riffs ever played.
In addition, according to the results of the voting " Top 100 Riffs of all time "by the Australian radio station" Triple J", the riff from" Stockholm Syndrome "was recognized as the greatest riff of all time, overtaking" Smells Like Teen Spirit " by Nirvana and other equally legendary things.
"Plug In Baby" also entered the Top 20.
- One of the few weaknesses that Bellamy allows himself during the tour is playing poker.
He has a dream to get into the program " Late Night Poker "on Channel 4:"But there is an initial bet of 1,500 pounds, and I am not yet such a master to take risks."
