History[edit / edit wiki text]
Formation and early years (1992-1997)[edit / edit wiki text]
In the early nineties, Matthew, Dominic and Chris played in different bands at Teignmouth School.
The formation of Muse began after Matthew Bellamy became the guitarist in Dominic Howard's band.
They got into a difficult situation when their second guitarist Phys Vandit decided to leave.
Then they asked their close friend Chris Wolstenholme to learn how to play bass guitar.
Since then, the band has changed a large number of names, such as: Gothic Plague, Carnage Mayhem, Fixed Penalty and Rocket Baby Dolls, before becoming Muse (the enumeration is abstract, the information in different interviews differ from each other).
In 1994, under the name Rocket Baby Dolls, Muse won a local "Battle of the Bands", destroying their equipment in the process of performing. (They were "the only real rock band.")[7][8]
Soon after, they decided not to go to university, but to immerse themselves in the musical environment.
They changed their name to Muse and started playing in local clubs like The Cavern in Exeter.
The first EP and Showbiz (1998-2000)[edit / edit wiki text]

The Muse logo, which came into use mainly after the release of the mini album Muse in 1998
After several years of forming a metropolitan fan base, Muse played their first concerts in London and Manchester.
The band met with Dennis Smith, the owner of Sawmills (a recording studio in a converted mill in Cornwall, in Southwest England), and signed a contract with him.
This meeting led Muse to their first real recordings and the release of the eponymous EP with the face of the House on the cover by the Soomill label Dangerous.
Their second EP Muscle Museum, released in January 1999, included two versions of the title track and the song "Sober", "Uno", "Unintended" and "Instant Messenger".
The release attracted the attention of influential British music journalist Steve Lamak.
Lamak, also a DJ at Radio One, who was the first to put Muse on national radio, recalls: "It was one of those records that does not fit into the framework of what sounds everywhere.
It immediately received excellent feedback from listeners."
Muse themselves, although they do not deny the influence, are struggling to assert their independence.
Bellamy says, " I've been traveling around Europe a lot since I graduated from college.
It's good to be exposed to a lot of influences, in addition to a few narrow trends, which the vast majority of people are content with."
Later, Dennis Smith founded the music company Taste Media specifically for Muse (the band stayed with her for the first three albums).
This was a great success for the band, as it allowed them to preserve their individuality of the sound of the early period of their career.
Despite the success of the first EP, British record companies refused to support Muse, being concerned that the sound of Muse resembled Radiohead (from the time of The Bends).
Nevertheless, the American label Maverick Records organized the band several performances in the United States before signing them at the end of 1998.
Upon the band's return to the UK, Taste Media signed deals with various labels in Europe and Australia.
John Leckie, who produced the aforementioned The Bends, The Stone Roses and The Verve, was brought in to work on Muse's first album, Showbiz.
The album reflected the band's aggressively lyrical style, and its lyrics contained many references to the difficulties they had to overcome to establish themselves in Teignmouth.
After the release of the album, the band went on tour to support the bands Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Origin of Symmetry (2001—2002)[edit / edit wiki text]
Main article: Origin of Symmetry
In November 2000, Muse started visiting the studio again, along with producers John Kornfield and Paul Reeve.
At first, three or four songs were recorded, but then the band changed the producer, and the American Rich Bones helped finish the album.
During the production of this album, the musicians experimented with various instruments, such as the church organ and the mellotron.
The sound had more of Bellamy's famous falsetto, aggressive guitar lines and keyboards.
The album clearly shows a transition from the storm of emotions that filled the previous Muse album to more balanced and subtle lyrically depressive moods.
It seems most likely that Matt had problems with self identification as a result of his sharply increased popularity.
It is only known that Matt was aware of the change in the sound of the album that eventually came out, and was very worried about how the listeners would perceive it[9].
Maverick felt that Bellamy's falsetto was unfavorable for the release of the album on the radio, and demanded that some songs be changed for the release of the album in the United States.
The band refused and left the label, which is why the album was finally released in the United States only on September 20, 2005, after Muse signed a contract with Warner.
Muse released a live DVD, Hullabaloo, with recordings of two consecutive concerts at Le Zenith in Paris in 2001.
Released at the same time on two CDs, the album of the same name contained B sides and an audio recording of a concert at Le Zenith.
In February 2006, Q magazine placed Origin of Symmetry on the 74th place in the list of the 100 greatest albums on the planet[10].
Absolution (2003—2005)[edit / edit wiki text]
Main Article: Absolution
Chris Wolstenholme performs at the Mod Club Theatre (Toronto) in 2004.
Absolution's international tour included performances in North America for the first time since 1999.
Absolution (produced by Rich Bones) was released in 2003 and debuted at the top of the UK chart.
Many songs from this album — "Time Is Running Out", "Hysteria", "Sing for Absolution", "Butterflies and Hurricanes" - became hits.
The album was originally planned to be recorded uplifting, with a powerful orchestral accompaniment.
However, several events occurred, as a result of which everything changed a lot.
Formally, according to the website MuseAndaMuse, the reason was the US and British attack on Iraq, which led to the band's decision to make a more apocalyptic and tragic sound.
For this purpose, some orchestral parts were remixed in order to dim them and add drama.
More real is just Matt's changing moods and incessant depressions.
By the way, during the same period, some professional music publications called Muse "the best rock concert band on the planet", forgetting for a while the U2 championship in this category.
Muse went on their first tour of the stadiums of the planet for about a year, during which the musicians visited Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada and France.
Five singles were released ("Time Is Running Out", "Hysteria", "Sing for Absolution", "Stockholm Syndrome" and "Butterflies and Hurricanes").
The American part of the tour began somewhat unsuccessfully, as Bellamy injured his face during a concert in Atlanta.
Muse headlined the Glastonbury Festival in June 2004.
Bellamy called this concert "the best live performance of our lives".
However, the luck was overshadowed by the fact that Dom's father, Bill Howard, who was present at the festival, died of a heart attack immediately after the concert ended.
"It was almost unreal that his father died an hour later.
It seemed implausible.
We spent a lot of time trying to support At Home.
I think he was comforted by the fact that at least his father saw one of the best moments of our creativity."
Muse soon resumed their tour.
They won two MTV Europe awards, including the nomination "best alternative band" and the Q Award in the category "best concert".
The band completed the tour in January 2005.
On December 12, 2005, the Absolution Tour DVD was released, containing footage of the best concerts from Glastonbury 2004 to concerts at London Earls Court, Wembley Stadium and at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
Two songs, "Endlessly" and "Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist", were filmed at Wembley Stadium.
The only song from the album that is not on this disc is "Falling Away With You", since it has never been performed at concerts until now.
Black Holes and Revelations (2006—2008)[edit / edit wiki text]

The band's tour began in North America.
After the last of the summer festivals, a tour of Europe began, which included a large number of performances in the UK arenas.
The tour continued with concerts in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia in early 2007 and returned to England with grand concerts, the first at the restored Wembley Stadium on June 16 and 17.
Both concerts were recorded and released on the album HAARP, released on March 17, 2008 in the UK and on April 1 in the US.
The name is taken from the American research program HAARP, which studies the possibility of controlling the ionosphere.
In August, the band returned to the United States, where they played at Madison Square Garden in New York.
In October, they performed in Las Vegas with Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk, and Queens of the Stone Age.
The tour continued with a visit to Russia, where two concerts were given in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
In 2008, many concerts were also given.
In March, the band performed in Africa Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as in Dubai.
Muse played at the Rio Lisboa Festival on June 6 together with Kaiser Chiefs, The Offspring and Linkin Park.
The Resistance (2009—2011)[edit / edit wiki text]

Performance of "The Resistance" at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on November 10, 2009.
In an interview given to the magazine "Rock Mag" in May 2008 and published in the July issue, Bellamy confirmed the information about the beginning of work on a new album.
Some of the songs were supposed to sound in an electronic or dance key, some were more likely to be symphonic or classical.
The musicians even invited an orchestra to record.
Matthew also stated that in order to achieve greater freedom in the sound, they will produce the album independently.
The Resistance was released on September 11 in Italy, Germany, Australia and the Benelux, on September 14 in the UK and on September 15 in the US and Canada.
This is the first album that was produced by the band itself.
The mixing was handled by Mark Stent.
In the first week, 451 thousand copies of the album were sold, which became a record for the band and for the UK in general this year.
The Resistance debuted at number one on the charts of 19 countries and reached number three on the US chart.
It was a better result than the previous album.
The first single, "Uprising", was released a week earlier.
To date, four singles have been released from this album — "Uprising", "Undisclosed Desires", "Resistance" and "Exogenesis: Symphony".
Bellamy's performance at the Oracle Arena in Oakland (California) on December 12, 2009
The band's resistance tour began with a concert on October 22, 2009 at the Hartwall Arena in Finland.
Having traveled all over Europe during the autumn months, the musicians took part in the Australian Big Day Out festival after the New Year holidays.
In February and April, Muse went on a tour in America.
After a short rest, which will end on May 25 with a small concert in Paris, the band will begin a large scale festival and stadium summer tour, within which they will participate in many festivals, including Rock in Rio, Coachella, Glastonbury 2010, Coke Live Festival.
320 people participate in the maintenance of the tour.
It is also known that the performances will be held on a pyramid stage measuring about 60 m wide and 45 m deep.
On May 17, a new single called "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)"was released.
This song became the soundtrack to the new film "Twilight Saga "" Twilight.
The saga.
The eclipse".
The song "Uprising" sounds in the trailer of the new film[12] by James Mangold "Knight of the Day", starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.
And the song "Exogenesis: Symphony Part I" sounds in the promotional trailer for a new fragrance from Dior, Dior Homme, the trailer of which was shot by Guy Ritchie.
In the winter and spring of 2011, Muse toured Latin America, Russia and Ukraine.
On May 20, 2011, the band played in the St. Petersburg SKK, on May 22 — in Moscow, in the Olympic Sports complex, on May 24 - in the Kiev Sports Palace.
The 2nd Law (2012—2013)[edit / edit wiki text]
Main article: The 2nd Law
In May 2011, the band announced their intentions to release a new album in 2012, noting that Bellamy had already demonstrated the first song ideas to Howard and Wolstenholme.[13]
In an interview for BBC Radio 1, the bass guitarist announced that the band is going to start recording a new album in September 2011. [14]
They also claim that the new album will not be like the previous five, "it will be something new".
At the end of February, on their official Twitter page, the band posted a photo from the recording of the new album and confirmed that the recording of a new studio record is going according to plan and its release is expected in the fall.[15][16]
On June 6, 2012, the trailer for the sixth album appeared on the official YouTube channel, [17] and at the end of June it became known that the official anthem of the Summer Olympic Games in London will be the song "Survival", which will be included in the new album.[18][19]
On July 13, the band presented the album's tracklist.[20]

In April 2014, the band announced the imminent start of work on the seventh studio album.[23]
The album will be recorded with producer Matt Lang, [24] and, according to Bellamy, will return to the sound of earlier albums, in particular the songs Citizen Erased from their second album, getting rid of the experiments of the last two albums.[25]
The themes of the album will be deep ecology, emotional rupture and the Third World War.[25]
In October of the same year, the first recording session of the new album was completed.[26]
In early 2015, the name of the new album — Drones was announced on the official Instagram account of the band. [24]
The album is scheduled for release on June 8, 2015, and the first single, Dead Inside — on March 23, while on March 12, the first track of the album called Psycho was published on the band's YouTube channel.[27]
As part of the tour in support of the latest Drones album, on June 21, 2016, Muse performed a single concert in Moscow at the Olympic Sports Complex"
Musical style[edit / edit wiki text]
Muse's music is eclectic, in addition to the basics of alternative rock, it absorbs elements of a variety of directions.
Among the most recognizable features of the band is an extremely high vocal (falsetto) Matt Bellamy, guitar riffs, frequent use of piano, and on later albums — orchestral arrangements.
In recent years, the band's sound has become less heavy, and the use of orchestral and piano arrangements, on the contrary, has become more frequent.
Among the most influential bands on Muse are Radiohead[5] and Queen[5].
The band's first album, Showbiz, even received negative reviews in the press for "copying" Radiohead.
In addition, Bellamy is a fan of the music of the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose works he sometimes quotes in songs.
