20 interesting facts about the Muse Group that you might not have known 01-12-2012
While the British band Muse continues its world concert tour in support of the sixth studio album "The 2nd Law", and the band's frontman Matt Bellamy is healing a recent leg injury, our portal tried to recall the most interesting facts about the band, some of which you might not know.
1. Until the age of 13, Matthew Bellamy was thinking about a career as a classical or jazz pianist.
At the age of 12, he won a talent contest with the song "What'd I Say"by Ray Charles.
"This was my first performance, and the first time I was applauded.
There were about 30 children in the hall, and I thought: this is a thrill!
I think that's when I realized what I wanted to do."
2. When Dominic Howard met Matthew Bellamy, his future bandmate knew nothing about the music that was fashionable at that time.
Bellamy was from a sports crowd, and Dom belonged to the indie kids – long hair, Dr. Martens shoes, baggy trousers of a bright color, that is, the classic style of the 90s.
The next meeting of the two teenagers took place at Matt's house.
Howard played him various albums, and then asked him to play something on the guitar.
An eccentric guy in a ridiculous Umbro tracksuit turned out to be a talented musician, and Dom invited him to join his band Gothic Plague.
3. When the band started recording their debut album "Showbiz", they had a list of about 80 songs written since 1994.
Chris remembers: "I remember how we discussed which songs we should include in the album.
We had to analyze all the material and choose the best of everything that we had created by that time."
4. On March 22, 1999, Muse played several songs at the" Viper Club "(one of the owners of which at that time was Johnny Depp), located in West Hollywood, in front of an audience consisting of 20 people, among whom were Steve Jones, guitarist of the legendary punk rock band Sex Pistols, and Guy Osiri, at that time Madonna's manager and CEO of Maverick Records.
Mr. Osiri immediately offered the band to sign a contract.
The album "Showbiz" was released in the United States on September 28, 1999, but did not have much success in America.
None of the songs from the album received radio rotation.
5. When recording the song "Screener", animal bones and llama claws were used as percussion.
Producer John Leckie was looking for suitable sounds, and the guys went through the packaging film and newspapers.
Chris remembers: "We spent more time on this than on the music itself."
As for the appropriate percussion for the ending of the song "Space Dementia", the band members tried shakers, salt and pepper shakers, rubbed their palms together, but as a result they decided to use the zipper on Matt's pants, passing the sound through the microphone.
6. During Muse's second visit to Russia in 2002, the guys asked the promoter to take them to an underground club (it was in St. Petersburg).
The organizers took the request literally and took them to a nightclub located in a former bomb shelter.
A huge bouncer locked the door behind them as soon as they entered.
"The club was full of people who injected themselves with drugs.
There were used syringes on the floor.
We stayed there just long enough so that our departure would not seem like an escape.
Then we were taken to a strip club.
It seems that this was the only place opened late on Wednesday night that did not look like a disgusting set for the movie "On the Needle".
7. Matt has repeatedly confessed his love for hallucinogenic mushrooms.
"While we were living in Devon, no one told us which music to write was "cool" and which was not.
And it was good for us.
We were left to ourselves, ate mushrooms and created our own world.
We had the freedom to do whatever we wanted.
It was only when we got out of this world that we realized how strange it all looks from the outside."
"Actually, I donot advocate drugs.
But the use of psychedelics once a year really opens the doors of perception."
8. Matt is a big fan of Tom Waits and has attended his concerts in New York and London.
"In terms of the methods of manipulating sound and sound patterns to create an atmosphere, Waits had a decisive influence on Muse, although this similarity is not so easy to notice.
His music is the complete opposite of ours, but I love him because he puts so much feeling into his songs, tries on different images when he sings."
"I think such wisdom is an extremely rare phenomenon.
His lyrics are amazing, they reflect all the diversity of the world."
9. While on tour in support of the album "Origin of Symmetry", the band members endlessly reviewed recordings of The Who concerts.
Matt: "On stage, I'm spinning like crazy.
I definitely borrowed this from them.
We wanted to make our performances more impressive.
The Who inspired us to improve as performers."
10. The presentation of the album "Absolution" took place at the London Planetarium a month before the release of the album.
Hundreds of journalists and other interested persons gathered to go on a virtual flight through the endless expanses of the universe to the majestic accompaniment of the new album.
It is noteworthy that in 1973, Pink Floyd presented the album "Dark Side Of The Moon"here.
11. The song "Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist" (2:04) uses the sound recorded at the moment when Chris jumped into the pool, which was in the studio.
The song "The Small Print" (2:51) uses a recording of a cat's meow.
12. Matt does not allow anyone to be present in the studio when he records vocals.
"When I'm alone, I can work at the speed I want.
Sometimes my manic desire for perfection makes me do an infinite number of takes until I am satisfied with the result.
I try different microphones, different singing style, different levels - from quiet to loud.
During the recording, I like to sing with bare feet.
Such is the oddity.
It helps me to achieve more drama."
13.
During the recording of the album "The Resistance", the band members often sat in the living room and talked about the end of the world.
One day, Matt went to the supermarket and bought about 500 pounds worth of canned food.
Chris: "I thought it was a joke at first, until he actually did it.
I think that if you really stock up on canned food, this amount is still not enough."
14. Matt claims that technically he is most proud of the three part composition "Exogenesis Symphony": "Mainly because of the arrangement, it is quite complicated... It is one of those things that I am afraid to play live."
15. On June 13, 2010, there were 6 albums on the US Billboard 200 chart at once, which included songs written by Matt Bellamy: "The Resistance"; Renee Fleming, «Dark Hope» («Endlessly» cover); Adam Lambert, «For Your Entertainment» («Soaked» cover); Twilight Saga: Eclipse Soundtrack, «Neutron Star Collision»; Twilight Soundtrack, «Supermassive Black Hole»; Twilight Saga: New Moon Soundtrack, «I Belong to You» Remix.
16. Matt is interested in theories related to alien life.
"There are many different conspiracy theories exploring whether aliens exist, whether they have actually visited Earth before, or whether all this is fiction.
I find all this extremely interesting.
I've always been interested in something like this.
I'm the kind of person who can read a book by David Icke without almost wincing once."
17. In June 2010, during the "Rock Am Ring" festival in Germany, a huge inflatable flying saucer made of Muse props disrupted the TV broadcast and interrupted the broadcast of the Slayer concert.
Matt: "I've always been attracted to flying objects.
I wanted something to fly over the heads of the audience.
I dream that at our concerts there will be an entire solar system above the audience, and that the audience will have the feeling that they are in space.
True, there are problems with the wind, but we are working on it."
18. Chris often supports beginner groups.
So, in 2008, he performed several times as a drummer with the indie band from Teignmouth Hey Molly, and also helped them with the release of their first EP "Backstreet Boozer Loser".
In March 2011, Chris performed at a secret concert in Dublin with the local band Bipolar Empire, and in 2012 he participated in the recording of a charity single by The Foundry from Rotherham.
19. For the first time, future Muse members saw Morgan Nicholls at the Reading Festival in 1993 or 1994.
Nicholls played bass guitar in the band The Senseless Things.
In August 2004, he replaced the broken arm of Chris at the V Festival.
Even then, Muse thought about offering him the role of their concert keyboard player.
In May 2006, Morgan performed for the first time as a full – time and permanent concert member of the band during BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.
20. Before the concerts at Wembley Stadium in 2007, Muse reviewed the video of the legendary Queen concert in 1986, trying to see every detail.
Dom turned to drummer Roger Taylor for advice.
He advised the House not to worry – anyway, the stage is so far away that you canot see a damn thing from there.
In May, Chris visited the FA Cup final to see what the stadium looks like, packed to capacity.
At 9 o'clock in the morning on December 9, ticket sales for the concert on June 16, 2007 began.
By 9.45 all tickets were sold out.
It took seven trucks to transport the equipment, 16 kilometers of cables were used, and the entire installation took exactly three hours.
