In the footsteps of the "Godfather" - the Sicilian mafia in film and in life

Sicily is strongly associated with the mafia in our minds.
Naturally, being in Sicily, we wanted to visit the places where the episodes from the film "The Godfather"were filmed.
Bar "Vitelli" - here Michael meets the father of his future wife Episodes of the film The Godfather were filmed in two neighboring villages: Forza d'Agrò (Forza d'Agrò) and Savoca.
These are very picturesque and pretty Sicilian villages.
Church of Forza d'Agro Michael Carleone's first wife lived in Savoca, and their wedding took place there (according to the script).
This village received a decent amount of money from the creators of the film The Godfather, which the city fathers spent on recreating the city and creating a museum.
The city museum of Savoka tells about the life of these places.
There is in particular a family tree of the Corleone family.
The creators of the film took a real story as a basis.
The town of Corleone is located in the vicinity of Palermo and was indeed a hotbed of crime, but the town is not so picturesque, so the "Godfather" was filmed in Savoca.
It is curious that the ancestors of Al Pacino were originally from the city of Corleone.
There are a lot of abandoned houses in the city of Forza d'aggro.
However, this is not the result of the work of the mafia (as they say in the movie "The Godfather").
At the beginning of the century, typhus raged on the island, killing a large number of people.
And it was from him, as well as from poverty, that the inhabitants of Sicily fled to America.
Our route to Sicily on the map
A little bit from the true history of the Sicilian mafia.
The Mafia, contrary to popular belief, was born not so long ago.
After the unification of Italy, the new Italian government did not reach its southern part and the mafia appeared there in a power vacuum.
Initially, the mafia protected the production of citrus fruits.
She was so firmly entrenched on the island that she was invincible for a century, despite the fact that there were brave people who resisted her.
Another common myth that Italians are cowardly does not correspond to reality.
The events described in the TV series "Octopus" are quite real.
After all, the mafia was eventually defeated by two lawyers.
Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borcelino — two of the most famous fighters against the mafia It is interesting, but the case helped to defeat the mafia (something similar happens in part 4 of the film "Octopus").
At the end of the XX century, two mafia clans were at war with each other.
The Corleone clan was quite successful in eliminating their opponents.
Among the victims of this massacre were two sons, a brother, a nephew, a brother in law and a son in law of a fairly influential "man of honor" Tommaso Buscetta.
Bouchette was arrested in Brazil.
After an unsuccessful suicide, Buscetta decided to repent and began cooperating with the authorities.
He only agreed to confess to Giovanni Falcone (this is an Italian judge who fought against the mafia for many years) .
Buscetta provided Falcone with inside information about the mafia.
"For us," Falcone said, " he was like a professor of linguistics, sending his students to Turkey and forbidding the use of sign language."
Together with his colleague Paolo Borsellino, Falcone methodically checked the confessions of the mafia and collected 8,607 pages of documents – the basis of the legendary "maxi trial", which took place in a specially built armored courtroom in Palermo.
The explosion on July 19, 1992, in which Paolo Borselino died on December 16, 1987, after twenty two months of court hearings, the judge announced the convictions of 342 mafiosi and sentenced them to a total of 2665 years in prison.
Contrary to the hopes and hopes of Cosa Nostra, the Court of Cassation – the Supreme Court of Italy upheld the original sentences.
It was the most crushing defeat that the Sicilian mafia has ever suffered.
In response, the Corleonians sent "death squads" to hunt for investigators.
Falcone died a few months after the verdict was announced.
Less than two months later, Italy again experienced a shock – Paolo Borsellino and five colleagues accompanying him were killed in a car explosion at the house of the investigator's mother.
The TV series "Octopus" was filmed just during these events: the trial of the mafia took place in the period from 1987 to 1992.
The first episode of the film "Octopus" was released in 1984, the fourth film, where Cattani dies, in 1989.
The tragic deaths of Falcone and Borsellino had consequences that are still felt today.
First of all, their death was a confirmation of the defeat suffered by the mafia.
when writing the article, materials from the book were used: John Dickey.

Hello.
And this lake is by chance not the same as in the movie Octopus, where the house of Filippo Razi and his daughter Esther stood.
Can you tell me where this place is located?
Thanks

If my memory does not change, then the action of octopus 4 begins in Milan.
Apparently that lake is also in the north.
And here only the views of Sicily, the view of the sea from the village of Forza
d'agro

I canot guarantee for sure, but in my opinion, this is not a lake, but the Strait of Messina, separating Sicily and Calabria, which is located on the tip of an Italian boot.
Such ferries open from the very villages of Savoca and Forza D'Agro, where many scenes from the film were filmed.
