Brief biography: Sergey Donatovich Dovlatov
(1941 - 1990)
Sergey Donatovich Dovlatov (1941-1990), novelist.
He was born on September 3 in Ufa, when the family was being evacuated.
Since 1945, he lived in Leningrad, where he graduated from school and entered the philological faculty of Leningrad University, which he failed to finish: he was expelled after the third year.
He was drafted into the Soviet Army, where he served as a warden in a special regime criminal camp.
"What I saw completely shocked me," Dovlatov will write.
- I saw how low a person can fall.
And how high it can soar."
After returning to Leningrad, he begins to write "The Zone", although he understands the impossibility of publishing it.
He earned his living mainly in journalism.
For three years he was a correspondent of the Tallinn newspaper "Soviet Estonia".
For some time he worked as a guide in the Pushkin Nature Reserve, later he will write about it in his stories.
Some of Dovlatov's stories were published abroad in the Continent magazine in 1976.
For this, he was expelled from the Union of Journalists of the USSR.
In 1978, he emigrated to the United States (his wife and daughter left earlier), lived in New York.
Since the mid 1980s, it has become popular among readers, has been highly appreciated by Western critics.
He has published twelve books that have been published in America and Europe in five languages.

Notes of the warden" (1982); "Stories", " Our "(1983); "Compromise" (1981); "Reserve" (1983); "Craft" (1985);
"The Suitcase" (1986).
On August 24, 1990, Sergey Dovlatov died suddenly in New York at the height of his creative fame.
