Sir Robert (Bobby) Charltonsource: Associated Press
Today marks the 79th anniversary of the great English footballer Sir Robert (Bobby) Charlton.
"Some people tell me that we, professional football players, are slaves.
Well, if this is slavery, then give me a life sentence."
Bobby Charlton
FOUR UNCLES AND TWO NEPHEWS
Bobby Charlton's four uncles were footballers: Jack Milburn (Leeds and Bradford), George Milburn (Leeds and Chesterfield), Jimmy Milburn (Leeds and Bradford) and Stan Milburn (Chesterfield and Leicester).
But most of all, Bobby's mother, Cissy Milburn, wanted her son to become a footballer.
Especially since young Robert had someone to take an example from: the older brother Jackie had his eye on Leeds United and he left the career of a police officer for the sake of a football proffi career.
History is silent, but it is unlikely that there were no uncles who played for Leeds.
And Bobby was probably destined to follow in the footsteps of his older brother and uncles, but chance intervened.
On February 9, 1953, during a match of East Northumberland schoolchildren, the chief scout of Manchester United, Joe Armstrong, noticed a 15 year old Bobby Charlton, a player of the Bedlington High School team.
He got on the pencil of the scouts of several other clubs, but chose United.
In October 1954, Bobby signed his first professional football contract.
A real diamond fell into the hands of the legendary Matt Busby, who began building a new Manchester in the late 40s.
He quickly realized that he had not made a mistake with
Bobby toth regularly scored for the youth and reserve squads of United, but made his debut in the base only in October 1956.
Interestingly, at the same time, Bobby was called up for military service.
Busby contributed to the young talent serving in Shrewsbury a town located within transport accessibility from Manchester.
This circumstance allowed Bobby to play on weekends for United.
UNITED
In his first season, 1956/57, Charlton played in 14 matches.
Manchester United won the championship and reached the FA Cup final, where they lost to Aston Villa.
The goalkeeper suffered a broken jaw at United, and substitutions were not allowed then.
The following season, Bobby became a solid foundation player, and United became the first English club to reach the semi finals of the European Champions Cup.
In the quarterfinals, United faced the Yugoslav "Crvena Zvezda".
At home, the British won with a score of 2:1.
In the second leg on February 5 in Belgrade, Charlton made a "double" and United led with the score 3: 0, but the hosts managed to finish the match in a draw — 3: 3.
THE MUNICH DISASTER
Source: Associated Press
The next morning, February 6, 1958, the English team went home on British European Airways flight BE609 from Zemun Airport (a suburb of Belgrade) and landed in Munich for refueling.
In Munich, a snowstorm began, by the time the refueling ended, the runway was covered with ice.
After two unsuccessful attempts to take off, the passengers left the plane, in which a "small technical breakdown" was then eliminated.
The passengers spent ten minutes in the terminal building, and then they were asked to board again.
Some began to get nervous.
Charlton and Dennis Violet swapped places with Tommy Taylor and David Pegg, who felt that they would be safer in the back of the plane.
When trying to take off, the plane broke through the fence at the end of the runway, the wing broke through a house standing nearby.
From the impact, the wing and part of the tail of the aircraft fell off and crashed into a tree and a wooden hut.
Charlton, strapped to the seat, was thrown out of the cabin.
When United goalkeeper Harry Gregg (who somehow managed to get out of the plane unharmed, after which he single handedly began to rescue the survivors) found him, he thought that Charlton had died.
He grabbed Charlton and Violet by the belts and dragged them away from the plane, fearing an explosion.
Gregg then returned to the plane to help others.
At this time, Charlton and Violet got out of their seats.
Charlton, who suffered head injuries and serious traumatic shock, was in the hospital for a week.
Seven of his teammates died during the crash, including Taylor and Pegg, with whom he and Violet exchanged places.
In total, the disaster claimed 23 lives out of 44 passengers on board.
At first, the cause of the accident was called icing of the wings of the aircraft, but further investigation showed that the ice on the runway left almost no chance for a safe takeoff.
Charlton was the first survivor to be discharged from a Munich hospital.
"In the hospital, I looked in the mirror and began to ask myself the question:" How the hell can you go through all this, getting off with just a blow to the head and a small cut?", - said Charlton.
He returned to Manchester on February 14, eight days after the crash.
During the recovery period, he played with local youth.
The bloodless United was expected to fly out of the European Champions Cup, losing in the semifinal matches to Milan with a total score of 5:2.
However, the club managed to reach the FA Cup final, where it lost to Bolton 0: 2.
NATIONAL TEAM
Bobby Charlton was first called up to the England national team for the British championship game against Scotland in the spring of 1958.
England won 4-0.
Bobby scored the goal with a fly kick after a pass from left winger Tom Finney.
In his second match for the national team, he made a double against the Portuguese national team (the match at Wembley ended with a score of 2:1).
Charlton was included in the national team's bid for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, but never entered the field there, which caused confusion among a number of critics.
Charlton gradually became the leader of Manchester United and the England national team, scoring a lot and beautifully.
In 1959 he scored a hat trick in the match against team USA, which England won 8:1; the second hat trick for the national team was in 1961 in the game with Mexico (8:0).
Bobby played in all the qualifying matches for the world Cup in 1962, against the national team of Luxembourg, and Portugal, and was included in the team for the world Cup.
In the group stage match, Charlton scored against Argentina (England won 3-1), this goal was the 25th goal he scored for England in 38 games.
In the quarterfinals, England lost to the future champions, the Brazilian national team.
WORLD CHAMPION
England national team of 1966source: Associated Press
The home of the 1966 world champion is a special one in Charlton's career.
The national team was headed by Alf Ramsey, who received the right to single handedly determine the players called up to the national team (before that, decisions were made by a committee).
Ramsay got rid of a number of age related players, he decided to build a team around Charlton.
Before the start of the World Cup, everyone was waiting for Bobby Charlton to play stable at his usual high level and confirm his reputation as one of the best players in world football.
And he fully met these expectations.
At this championship, Bobby moved back a little from the position of a center forward and actually played in midfield, conducted the team, but at the same time he scored himself.
His two goals in the semi final to the Portuguese led the England team to the final.
In total, he scored three goals.
The victory over Germany 4: 2 (in extra time) and the title of world champions is the highest achievement of the English national team.
The well deserved result of 1966 was the award of the "Golden Ball" to Charlton of the best football player in Europe.
CHAMPIONS CUP
In 1968, 10 years after the tragedy in Munich, Manchester United became the first English team to reach the final of the European Champions Cup.
United beat Benfica 4-1 at Wembley in extra time, and Charlton scored two goals.
Thus, Bobby Charlton became the first Englishman to raise the Champions Cup over his head.
In the summer of 1968, England lost to the Yugoslav national team in the semi finals of the European Championship in Italy (Bobby did not play due to injury).
In the match for the third place, the England team won against the USSR team - 2:0.
In 1969, Charlton was awarded the Order of the British Empire for services to football.
On April 21, 1970, Bobby played his 100th match for the England national team in a meeting with Northern Ireland, on which occasion Alf Ramsay made him captain.
In this match, Charlton scored his 48th goal for the national team.
He scored the 49th and last goal a month later in a meeting with the national team of Colombia, which ended in a 4-0 victory for the British.
THE 1970 WORLD CUP AND THE END OF HIS CAREER
And then there was the World Cup in Mexico.
Until now, Bobby Charlton remains the only player of the England national team who has participated in four World Cups.
England started the World Cup with two victories and one memorable defeat against the Brazilian national team 0: 1. The match is recognized as one of the best in history by the level of football shown.
The quarterfinal between England and Germany turned out to be enchanting.
Charlton controlled the center of the field and stopped Beckenbauer's runs from deep, England led 2-0.
But Beckenbauer still scored.
Ramsay replaced the tired Charlton with Colin Bell.
The German national team managed to win back — Uwe Zeler equalized the score with a header, and then Gerd Muller scored the third, winning goal.
England crashed out of the tournament, and 32 year old Bobby Charlton decided to end his career for the national team, having played for it 106 times and scored 49 goals.
Upon returning home from Mexico, he informed Alf Ramsey of his decision.
His brother Jack, who is 2 years older than Bobby, but has played 71 fewer games, did the same.
In the early 1970s, Manchester United was going through hard times.
Charlton did not have a good relationship with other United stars, George Best and Denis Law.
"Anyone who saw what George Best could do on the football field wanted to be able to do the same.
He made a huge contribution to the game and enriched the lives of everyone who saw him in action," Charlton said about Best years later.
Charlton's last match for United was against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 1973.
Before the match, BBC television cameras caught the moment as the chairman of the Chelsea board of directors hands Charlton a gift cigarette case.
CHARLTON RECORDS

Charlton played 106 matches for the England national team, who finished his career in the national team after the 1970 World Cup.
By that time, it was a record.
He was later beaten by Bobby Moore and then Peter Shilton.

The record lasted for more than 47 years (1968-2015).
