The death of the Manchester United football team in Munich in 1958 09: 0006.02.2013 (updated: 12: 18 06.02.2013) 0543812
55 years ago, on February 6, 1958, a BEA Elizabethan plane crashed in Munich, carrying players and staff of the Manchester United football club, as well as several journalists and fans.
On February 6, 1958, an Airspeed Ambassador of the Elizabethan class of British European Airways crashed in Munich, operating charter flight 609 Belgrade — Manchester with an intermediate landing in Munich.
On board the plane were players and staff of the football team "Manchester United" (Manchester United), journalists and fans.
The Manchester United team, which was called the "Busby Kids" in honor of the team's head coach Matt Busby, was returning from Belgrade, where the quarterfinal match of the European Champions Cup with the local "Crvena Zvezda"took place.
The plane in which the team was flying home made a stop in Munich for refueling.
The weather was inclement.
The plane tried to take off twice.
The third attempt turned into a tragedy — the plane accelerated, but, entering the snow porridge at the end of the runway, broke through the airfield fence, crashed into a small house, and then into a wooden hangar where a truck with fuel was standing, an explosion occurred.
Of the 44 passengers, 23 were killed.
Among them are seven players of the main Manchester United squad: Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Billy Whelan.
Also killed were: club secretary Walter Crickmer, coaches Bert Whalley and Tom Curry, journalists Alf Clarke, Donny Davies, George Follows, Tom Jackson, Archie Ledbrooke, Henry Rose, Eric Thompson Thompson), Frank Swift (Frank Swift), pilot Kenneth Rayment (Kenneth Rayment), travel agent Bela Miklos (Bela Miklos), Matt Busby's close friend Willie Satinoff (Willie Satinoff) and steward Tom Cable (Tom Cable).
Two weeks later, another player died from his injuries — Duncan Edwards, who was predicted to have a great future in football.

John Berry (Johnny Berry) and Jackie Blanchflower (Jackie Blanchflower), who were hospitalized with serious injuries, survived, but they could not continue their sports career.
Several miraculously surviving football players did not manage to recover from the psychological shock.
The head coach of the team, Matt Busby, was in the hospital for two months.
The special commission considered the main cause of the crash to be a snow porridge at the end of the runway, as a result of which the plane failed to accelerate to the desired speed.
However, the airport administration initially blamed the pilot James Thain, saying that he did not follow the removal of ice from the wings of the liner, which caused the weight of the car to increase by almost a ton.
Tain was fully acquitted only in 1968, ten years after the disaster.
In memory of that terrible event, a memorial plaque and a "Munich Clock" were installed at Manchester's Old Trafford stadium on February 25, 1960.
In the mid 70s of the XX century, when the stadium was being reconstructed, the memorial plaque could not be moved to a new place without damage.
A new memorial plaque was installed in 1976.
In 1996, a third version of the memorial appeared at Old Trafford, more similar to the original original.
A monument to the legendary Manchester United coach Matt Busby was also erected.

On February 6, 2008, on the day of the 50th anniversary of the Munich disaster, a memorial service was held at the stadium.
On the same day, the tunnel under the South Stand of Old Trafford was named the "Munich Tunnel", an exhibition dedicated to the "Busby Kids" and the victims of the tragedy opened there.
On the anniversary of the disaster, Manchester United fans traditionally come to Old Trafford to pay tribute to the victims.
