The tragedy in Munich 1958
Plane crash in Munich Date: February 6, 1958 Time: 15: 03 (GMT) Character: Unsuccessful attempt to take off Place: Munich, West Germany Departure point: Belgrade, Yugoslavia Destination: Manchester, United Kingdom Deaths: 23
Munich plane crash Model: Airspeed AS 57 Ambassador Airline: British European Airways Departure point: Belgrade, Yugoslavia Stops en route: Munich Rome, Munich, Germany Destination: Manchester, United Kingdom Flight: BE609 Tail number: G ALZU Passengers: 40 Crew: 6 Survivors: 21
On February 6, 1958, a plane carrying Manchester United players and staff, as well as several journalists and fans, crashed during a hurricane after a third unsuccessful attempt to take off from the Munich airfield.
Manchester United was returning from Belgrade, where the team won against Red Star Belgrade in the European Champions Cup.
The plane stopped for refueling in Munich.
Twenty three of the forty three passengers were killed...
February 6, 1958
Everyone on board was in a good and relaxed state when the plane arrived on German soil.
Someone was playing cards, someone was chatting about the latest news, someone was reading books and magazines, which were full around.
The atmosphere was normal before the flight: a little nervous, but playing cards and chatting relaxed, some even slept.
Around 14-00 G ALZU AS 57 with its captain Kenet Rayment was ready for another take off.
His partner, Captain James Thane, had flown the plane before, so now their roles have been reversed.
At 14-31, the airport tower said that the 609 ZULU had started and Captain James Thane, later after the crash, described what happened next: "Ken opened the throttles that were between us to the "fully open" position and we synchronously pressed the necessary levers, opening the throttles to the end.
I commanded: "Full speed ahead!"
The engines sounded, but we immediately felt that something was wrong.
The engines were working very unevenly.
The plane was already starting to accelerate, but Ken pressed the brake.
After 40 seconds, the plane was already standing in place."
Duncan Edwards sent a telegram to his housewife in Manchester.
In it, he spoke about the delay.
The telegram was delivered after the disaster at 17: 00.
"All flights are prohibited, we will return home tomorrow."
"When we started the second acceleration, we decided that we would open the throttles a little earlier in order to start the engines earlier.
So, we got permission for a second attempt, but the same problem happened the second time – the engines stopped.
While the plane was refueling, the passengers went to drink some coffee."
Defender Bill Foulkes recalls: "We played cards almost all the way from Belgrade to Munich, and I remember that when we got off the plane, it was very cold.
After the first unsuccessful attempt to take off, I noticed that some of the passengers began to worry a little, but when the second attempt failed, everyone fell silent.
A quarter of an hour later, we were again asked to get on the plane.
We got on the plane, but no one was playing cards anymore I put the deck in my pocket and leaned back, waiting for the third attempt.
I was sitting about in the middle of the plane next to the window.
Matt Busby and Bert Voley were sitting together behind us, and I remember that Mark Jones, Tommy Taylor, Duncan Edwards and Eddie Coleman were sitting behind."
David Pegg got up and said, "I donot like it here, it's not safe here" and went back to the other players.
I saw Frank Swift go back too.
The others were sitting not far from me."
The captains discussed the problem with the technical employee of the airport, and at 15-03 609 ZULU started the third attempt.
Captain Thane describes her like this: "I told Ken that the engines were fixed for us, and that I was controlling the throttles.
Ken opened them by 28 positions.
The engines were running steadily, and we started forward.
He kept opening the throttles, I helped him until they were completely open.
He said: "Full speed ahead!"
, I checked the indicators and confirmed the command."
"Then I noticed the problem with the engines again and told him about it.
He closed the throttles.
I looked at the speedometer and saw the number 105 and it was unstable.
When she reached the 117 mark, I said into the radio: "Velocity 1!
Our flight is in danger!".
Suddenly, the speed dropped to 112, and then to 105.
Ken screamed: "My God!
We are not coping!".
I looked ahead and saw snow, a house and a tree near the airfield."
February 7, 1958
After the crash, Elizabethan (Elizabethan – the name of the plane) was almost unrecognizable.
The plane hit a house, which immediately caught fire.
In its center lay what had recently been its middle.
The fuselage hit a tree.
Barrels of fuel located near the house exploded.
Bill Foulkes remembers all this: "The back of the plane just disappeared.
I ran out as fast as I could.
I just ran and ran.
Then I turned around and realized that the plane would not explode and returned.
At that distance, I could see the burning remains of the plane.
I ran back.
Roger Byrne was strapped into his seat, Bobby Charlton was lying motionless in the other seat.
Then Gary Gregg came along and we started looking for those who could still be helped."
Two teammates helped Matt Busby, who was seriously injured, Bobby Charlton got up and went to help us.
All the wounded were taken to the Rechts de Isar Hospital in Munich.
It was the day before we realized the magnitude of the tragedy.
We went into the room and saw Matt Busby with an oxygen mask, and Duncan Edwards, who was very seriously injured, and Bobby Charlton with a bandaged head, Jackie Blanchflower with a bandaged arm and a cut face.
Albert Scanlon lay with his eyes closed.
Ray Wood had a concussion, Ken Morgans and Johnny Berry were just lying in their beds.
I talked to the nurse and she said that Duncan has a better chance of survival than Johnny…
We went to Frank Taylor's bed – he was the only journalist in the ward.
He asked if we would like to have a beer with him.
Like us, he didnot fully understand what had happened last night.
When we were about to leave, I asked the nurse about where I could see the rest of the guys.
She looked confused, so I asked again: "Where are the other survivors?"
She replied, " The others?
There are no others, they are all here.
Only then did we realize the enormity of what had happened.
The Busby children no longer existed."
Roger Byrne, Geoff Bent, Mark Jones, David Plegg, Liam Whelan, Eddie Coleman and Tommy Taylor died immediately.
The club's secretary, Walter Krikmer, also died, along with coach Tom Curry and another coach, Bert Wolley.
Duncan Edwards and Johnny Berry were fatally wounded and were fighting for their lives.
Matt Busby suffered numerous injuries and was the only employee of the Club who survived.
Eight of the nine sports journalists were killed: Alf Clark, Don Davis, George Folowes, Tom Jackson, Archie Lidbrook, Henry Rose, Eric Thompson and Frank Swift.
One of the captains of the plane was killed.
Two more passengers were killed: a travel agent and a fan.
Nine players survived, but two of them: Johnny Berry and Jackie Blanchflower never played football again.
Two photographers, the wife of a travel agent and two Yugoslav passengers (one with an infant) survived.
21 people died, 20 survived.
Of the four who fought for their lives, only two survived.
Three weeks later, Duncan Edwards and Kenette Rayment died in hospital.
Effects
On that weekend, United had to play with the League leader – Wolverhampton at Old Trafford.
Despite the long journey, everyone expected a victory and a reduction of the four point gap from them.
Everyone was waiting for this victory, ... but Saturday's headlines carried an incredible message: "Manchester United was in a plane crash ...
Few people were left alive ...".
The BBC came out with an urgent release.
Everyone listened, but few people understood the meaning of what was happening, the shock…
Jimmy Murphy, a friend of Matt Busby since the war, was now his assistant, and before that he was the coach of the Welsh national team.
He tells: "I always sat next to Matt on his European trips, but at that time I did what he asked me to do – I did not go to Yugoslavia with him.
To be honest, I was thinking much more about our matches at that moment than about the match in Yugoslavia.
We were going to the semifinals, and it occupied all my thoughts, but I didnot like being not with Matt."
Jimmy had just returned to Old Trafford from Wales when news of the plane crash caught up with him: "Elma George, Matt Busby's secretary, told me that the plane crashed.
I couldnot react.
She told me again.
I couldnot understand and believe it.
Then she started crying.
She said that many people had died, but she didnot know how many.
She only knew that one of the players had died.
I couldnot believe it.
Her words were buzzing in my head.
She left, and I went to my office.
I was prostrated and started crying."
The next day, Jimmy Murphy flew to Munich and froze at what he saw there: "Matt was wearing an oxygen mask and he said to me: "keep the flag flying".
Duncan recognized me.
It was terrible, terrible!"
Murphy was tasked with building the team anew.
Life went on despite the tragedy and Manchester United had to play again: "I didnot have any players, but there was a job that I had to do."
The first details appeared in Stop Press.
Around 18-00, a special issue of the Manchester Evening Chronicle was released: "About 28 people, including representatives of Manchester United, players and journalists died shortly after takeoff as a result of a plane crash near Munich.
About 16 survived.
Some of them are crew members."
The newspaper in which Alf Clark worked came out with a story that the plane could not rise and the flight was delayed.
But three hours later, a special issue was released, in which all the details of the disaster occurred.
After 24 hours, the whole of Europe has already reacted to the tragedy.
The Evening Chronicle newspaper came out with a story that there are 21 dead, and Matt Busby is fighting for his life: the chances are 50/50.
Conflicting information about the number of dead, injured and survivors appeared in different publications.
The next day, Manchester mourned the bodies of its fallen heroes, who were delivered at night.
The bodies were placed in the gymnasium so that relatives, friends and other people could say goodbye to them.
Thousands of fans came to say goodbye and express their respect.
At the request of the victims ' families, the funeral was closed to outsiders, but United fans stood nearby and accompanied the entire ceremony in complete silence.
All taxi drivers in the city worked for free for those who went to the funeral.
The chronicle of the disaster was constantly shown on television, minutes of silence were held at all the games and the fans of each club stood with their heads down.
Rival clubs have lent a helping hand to United.
Liverpool and Nottingham Forest were the first to respond to the request for help.
Football was going through a terrible tragedy.
To give United a chance to survive in the top League, the Football Association abolished a rule that prohibited players who played in the FA Cup this season from playing for another club in the same competition.
United needed players, and the FA's revoked rule allowed Jimmy Murphy to start the process of building a new team.
The first acquisition was Ernie Taylor from Blackpool.
Football was returning to Old Trafford.
It has been 13 days since the disaster.
Manchester United played Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup.
On this cold February day, 60,000 fans came.
The fans were openly crying in the stands.
Many came in red white and black colors, which from that moment became the colors of United.
The pre match program contained an article about the tragedy.
There was a void in the place where the MU squad for the game was supposed to be printed.
The fans were asked to fill it out themselves.
Someone entered it, just listening to the composition, which was announced through a loudspeaker.
Gary Cregg on goal and Bill Foulkes on the right in defense – they were the only ones who were on the field from the main squad.
The other names were not so well known: left back Ian Greaves, who had previously played for the MU juniors, replaced Roger Byrne: "I remember that it was very quiet in the locker room.
I couldnot get Roger out of my head.
I was sitting in his place, wearing his uniform ...".
The right midfielder was Freddie Goodwin, who came to the base from the reserve team.
This was his first game as a base.
Another reserve player is central midfielder Ronnie Cope.
The left midfielder is Stan Crowther, whose transfer will never be forgotten.
Stan played for Aston Villa and had absolutely no intention of joining our club.
Jimmy Murphy recalls: "Eric Houghton was the Villa coach at the time and it was he who told Stan that we were interested in him.
Stan didnot want to leave his club, but Eric took him to Old Trafford for the game with Sheffield.
On the way to the stadium, Eric told him again that he had to help us.
Stan referred to the lack of a uniform.
Eric said, " Donot worry.
I have everything with me."
We met with representatives of the MU at 16-30 an hour before the game and signed a contract!".
Colin Webster joined the MU in 1952, made his debut in the 1953-54 season.
He won the Champions League in 1956 after only 15 appearances in the base.
After that time, he did not perform in the base.
Ernie Taylor( Ernie Taylor), Alex Dawson (Alex Dawson), Mark Pearson – “Pancho” (Mark Pearson – “Pancho”) and Shay Brennan (Shay Brennan), also performed for the basis that day.
Sheffield Wednesday had no chance, because Manchester United, under the leadership of Murphy, played in memory of their fallen comrades.
The passion of the tribunes only pushed them.
3-0, this is the final score.
Sheffield player Albert Quixall, who will later join the MU, recalls: "I donot think that anyone who played on the field that night or watched from the stands will ever forget that game.
United played with all their heart and no matter how well they played, they would still have beaten us.
They played with inspiration.
We didnot play against 11 people on the field, we played against 60,000 people."
Two days after this game, Duncan Edwards died and the pain of the tragedy surfaced with a new force.
LIST OF THE DEAD:
