Vegetarianism and the brain
Good afternoon, dear readers of the blog Pump your brain.
In one of the previous articles: "Meat is necessary for the normal development of the brain" we had a dispute with one of the commentators, Sergey, on the topic of whether meat is useful for a person at all.
We did not come to a consensus, but I promised to write an article about how vegetarian food affects the brain, which I am doing.
I just want to warn those who will point the finger at the geniuses of vegetarians, there is no sense in this, because there are also enough meat eating geniuses in the world.
But British scientists believe that a vegetarian diet is not good for our brain.
After conducting long term studies, they claim that the exclusion of animal food from their diet leads to a loss of brain mass.
This process is typical for all people, regardless of their adherence to a particular diet, but the rejection of such products as meat (especially liver), milk and fish can speed up the process several times.
And one of the serious drawbacks, according to the researchers, is the lack of vitamin B12 in the food consumed [1], its absence leads to neurological and mental disorders, including blindness, which can become irreversible with late diagnosis.
A chronic lack of vitamin B12 leads to malignant anemia in the form of pernicious anemia.
Scientists came to similar conclusions as a result of constant monitoring of several groups of patients aged from 16 to 87 years.
These differences become clearly visible in the age group of 61-87 years [2].
In this age category, the main studies were conducted and tomograms ambiguously recorded a more serious decrease in the mass and volume of the brain in adherents of a vegetarian diet.
The same consequences were recorded in children, although to a lesser extent.
And following a vegetarian diet by a nursing mother can, due to the lack of this vitamin, lead to very serious consequences for the child.
These are the difficult relationships of our brain with a vegetarian diet.
