8 Things to Live for in Silicon Valley
Larrr | June 22, 2014 | USA, Silicon Valley, articles | 12 Comments
Today, a little positive about how great we are!
Why is it cool to live in Silicon Valley?
1. Weather.
260 sunny days a year.
It rains only 14 days a year (yes, life in the valley is not for those who love rain).
The temperature ranges from 4 degrees (heat) in winter, to 28 degrees in summer.
Sunny, not too hot, not too cold.
In a word, it is very comfortable.
2. Nature.
Do you want mountains and skiing?
No question – 4 hours by car and you are in Tahoe.
Do you want rocks and views?
4 hours by car, and you are in Yosemite.
Do you want a desert?
4 hours by car, and you are in the valley of death.
Do you want to swim in the sea?
4 hours by car to the south, and you can swim.
Do you want extreme, action and shootout?
An hour by car, and you are in Auckland: D.
Although nature is not so diverse in the valley itself, there are very, very many places around that take your breath away!
And they are so different that everyone will find a place to their liking.
And to get there – just a couple of hours by car.
3. People.
There are a lot of rich and non poor people living in Silicon Valley.
Many of them have grown their companies and earned a couple of million (or even billions) on this.
Even more simply work for the giants of the valley Google, Twitter, Facebook, Oracle, Yahoo!
– and they earn not millions, but quite a decent salary.
Therefore, people here are basically happy with their lives – they do not have to fight for existence, think about food or huge debts, that tomorrow they may not have a job.
They move to another level of the Maslow pyramid.
They do not live in anger or tension (which often accompanies those who do not have their basic needs or need for security met), and begin to think about how they can contribute to society, help others achieve something more.
The compass needle from the “take” spectrum shifts to the “give " spectrum.
Needless to say, it is much easier and more pleasant to live in such a society?
4. Google Shopping Express.
Google Shopping Express is a delivery service for goods from stores.
On the same day, free of charge (the first six months).
I havenot bought baby food, diapers and everything else for a very long time, I myself – a couple of mouse clicks, 5-10 minutes of time from home, and everything will be delivered to the house.
The choice of products is huge.
Here is a list of stores from which I can order:
So far, this service is only available in Silicon Valley and New York.
5. Culture.
The key word in the culture of the valley is diversity.
People come here from different parts of the world.
Of course, there are a lot of Indians and Chinese – personally, I communicate with both almost every day.
And, I must say, this greatly expands the horizons.
Not to mention the fact that people here are very tolerant of the whims of others, and are quite progressive in their views.
Whether we agree with this or not, a lot is changing in society from a very quick departure from the idea that a woman's job is in the kitchen, to same sex marriage.
I think in 50 years they will look at us as we look at those who believed that women and the right to vote are incompatible things.
Now it is so natural that almost no one even thinks about what could be different.
So Silicon Valley is at the forefront of social trends.
And here you can find accomplices in mind on almost any topic.
6. Connections Do you know about the theory of six handshakes?
According to this theory, any two people on earth are separated by 6 handshakes.
So, I think that in the valley this number is much lower.
I know people who know the Google manual.
And Google's management knows everyone from Hollywood stars to presidents.
And for sure, they know someone who knows them.
And I'm not talking about the fact that I'm just all in relationships.
This is not a typical situation for those who live in the valley.
Why are such connections needed?
Perhaps someday you will create your own company, and you will need to look for investors or employees.
Or you will need to reach out with your very important idea to the powerful of this world.
And then the knowledge of people who know a lot of other people will be very useful.
7. Work This item is most interesting for programmers, of course.
The valley companies Apple, eBay, Google, Intel, Oracle, Yahoo, NVidia, Cisco and many others – are an incredibly large cluster of large, influential companies in one place.
Moreover, many companies have their main office here, that is, all the most important and interesting things happen here.
In general, this is the heart of the IT industry in a certain sense.
So if you are a programmer (and I am a programmer), then there is plenty of space and a huge choice for you.
Moreover, due to the fact that companies are fighting among themselves for good employees, this means a good salary for employees, and a lot of delicious buns like a free massage.
It is difficult for me to imagine the best place to work – in the world – for a programmer in terms of diversity and prospects.
8. Prestige It seems to me that as much as having a good company on your resume raises the chances of finding a job anywhere in the world, so working in the valley has the same effect.
Such a candidate is likely to be interested in one important reason – connections and contacts.
And, of course, if someone has lived in the valley and decided to move to another place for one reason or another, then this is an invaluable professional experience in any case.

I had no doubt that it was bad in the valley :))
Well, is everything really so rosy?!
Tell us something bad about the valley, so you came there and bam, you learned something that you could not even think about
Allagentis
Of course, I will tell you :).
Fucking real estate prices, for example, are bad.
For 1 million, for example, you canot buy anything decent in a good part of the valley.
max
Well, just like in Moscow :).
Our prices in Kiev are simpler.
Dmitry
They meant for $1 million
max
Well, not rubles:))

Is everything really so bad in Oakland in criminal terms?
It would seem that there is a SF bridge over there, and Berkeley is next to it — how can a criminal district exist there at all?
Allagentis
Yes, there are poor criminal areas there.
And, they say, it's better not to go there.

I walked around Oakland even in the evening.
Nothing seems to have happened yet ) Although they say that the truth is that crime there is higher than usual…
Allagentis
I think it depends very much on the district, too.
But even in bad areas, the situation is not such that a person got out of the car, and then a bunch of bandits and pistols immediately ran up to him.
It's just that the chance of running into someone is much higher.

There are two areas in the SF Bay View and Hunter's Point, where it is better not to go even during the day.
There is also Tenderloin if you suddenly need drugs right in the city center.
Compared to those areas, Auckland is a safe place

I would clarify that the weather in SF is radically different.
19 degrees and fog – it's summer in the city

And what about the vans were not mentioned, in which most of the local programmers live, because there is not enough money for a rented apartment?
