How did the third most popular mobile operating system appear, what difficulties accompanied it when it appeared?
What preceded this, why was there a need for a fundamentally new mobile OS?
You will learn the answers to these and other questions from our article today, where we will tell the story of the creation of the Microsoft Windows Phone OS.
The history of this mobile operating system is inextricably linked with both desktop Windows and its portable versions.
It can even be called the result of many years of Microsoft's attempts to occupy the niche of an OS for portable devices, and this time the attempt turned out to be successful.
However, the direct predecessors of this OS can also not be called losers: they quite successfully mastered the market for many years, and Windows Phone can be called a natural evolutionary development of the mobile operating system from Microsoft.
Windows Mobile, CE and others
Old timers may recall the embedded Windows CE OS (which, by the way, is still used in the industry), as well as Windows Mobile, whose development ended in the late 2000s with version 6.5.3.
Strictly speaking, the sixth Windows Mobile was based on the related Windows CE 5.2, becoming in fact its very much improved version.
You can recall HTC Touch – it literally blew up the market of early smartphones, becoming the first of them to be controlled by a finger, not a stylus, and it was based just on the Windows Mobile OS of the sixth version.
Not to mention the numerous PDAs that were then released on the same Windows Mobile.
In 2008, a new version of this OS was introduced – Windows Mobile 6.1.
Under its control, the Samsung WiTu smartphone, which later became legendary, was also released, which received a non standard widescreen screen, which eventually caught on, as well as the famous TouchWiz shell (in which there is nothing special, to tell the truth, but it is still used in Samsung devices).
Finally, a year later, the latest major version of Windows Mobile 6.5 was introduced with a significant functionality update, where the interface for finger control was finally optimized.
At the same time, the first and only smartphone on this OS with a multitouch appeared: HTC HD2, on which, by the way, it was possible to run Android, Windows Phone 7, Ubuntu, MeeGo and even Windows RT.
The latest update of this OS is called Windows Mobile 6.5.3, which is characterized by minor cosmetic changes.
And finally, in 2010, the world saw Windows Phone 7.
Windows Phone 7
In fact, even with quite clearly recognized predecessors in the face of Windows Mobile, CE and others, this operating system is actually completely new and has nothing in common with its predecessors, except for the manufacturer and his ideas.
In fact, Microsoft began to promote the "Windows Phone" brand back in the era of Windows Mobile 6.5, but on October 11, 2010, it began to work in full force – it was then that the new operating system was introduced.
Windows Phone 7 has completely lost compatibility with previous versions (more precisely, it was not originally there), received a completely new "tiled" Metro UI interface, a full fledged app store and much more.
The file system of the novelty was closed (which, by the way, makes it similar to the Apple iPhone), a full fledged office suite Microsoft Office Mobile, a mobile browser Internet Explorer and other useful things appeared.
10 days after the presentation, sales of the first smartphones began.
Synchronization of media content took place through the Zune application: it was not very convenient, but iPhone owners, for example, were already used to iTunes, so this inconvenience was taken for granted by many.
The version that improves this OS and fixes bugs (more than 500 updates and improvements were made in total) was presented a few months later, in February 2011 at the MWC 2011 conference.
There were Internet Explorer Mobile 9 and HTML5 support in it, hardware acceleration, support for the front camera, 19 new languages, multitasking in third party applications, the SkyDrive cloud (the same one that was later renamed OneDrive), and from the point of view of social life, for example, the integration of Twitter into the People Hub can be called an improvement.
