IBM Watson is an IBM supercomputer equipped with a question and answer artificial intelligence system, created by a group of researchers led by David Ferucci.
Its creation is part of the DeepQA project.
Watson's main task is to understand questions formulated in natural language and find answers to them in the database[1].
It is named after the founder of IBM, Thomas Watson[2].

Participation in "Jeopardy!" [edit / edit wiki text]
In February 2011, the supercomputer took part in the TV show Jeopardy! (the Russian equivalent is "Own Game")
[3].
His rivals were Brad Rutter, the winner of the biggest win in the program, and Ken Jennings, the record holder for the longest winless streak.
The computer won, receiving $ 1 million, while Jennings and Rutter received, respectively, 300 and 200 thousand.
Platform[edit / edit wiki text]
Watson consists of 90 IBM p750 servers, each of which is equipped with four eight core POWER7 architecture processors.
The total amount of RAM is more than 15 terabytes.
The system had access to 200 million pages of structured and unstructured information with a volume of 4 terabytes[4], including the full text of Wikipedia.
During the game, Watson did not have access to the Internet.
The future of the project[edit / edit wiki text]
IBM, together with Nuance Communications (a manufacturer of speech recognition tools), as well as a number of other companies, such as New York Genome Center (personalized clinical solutions based on individual gene variation), Truven Health Analytics (cloud health data libraries), Insilico Medicine (search for optimal drugs for personal therapy), Under Armour (development of personal wellness plans), Mayo Clinic (diagnostics and clinical solutions, distribution of patients into treatment groups), Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (oncology), iDavatars (virtual medical assistant), Arch Health Partners (hypertension control), Medtronic (developments for helping diabetics, cardiovascular diseases) has developed and continues to develop a product aimed at helping in the diagnosis and treatment of patients[5][6][7][8][9].
A computer, using Big Data processing technologies, will help in a matter of minutes to extract optimal solutions from the endless sea of information about individual medical histories and ways of their treatment, as well as from a huge number of scientific articles and issue them in the form of a report.
The possibilities of using it in other areas, such as the assessment of insurance policy or energy efficiency, are also being considered.
