IBM and Bon Appétit presented the culinary application "Chef Watson"
24.06.2015
IBM Corporation together with the publication Bon Appétit presented a unique culinary application "Chef Watson" (Chef Watson).
Using the capabilities of cognitive technologies, it will allow cooks around the world to create completely new recipes and try previously unknown gastronomic combinations.
The web application is one of the illustrative examples of the use of cognitive computing, the purpose of which is to develop a person's creative thinking.
"Chef Watson" will inspire every cook to take a creative approach to cooking, teach them not to be afraid of new ideas and experiments in the kitchen and push them to discover unexpected combinations of ingredients.
The free application, designed for enterprising chefs, uses the IBM Watson cognitive computing system, which has been trained to process large amounts of information and is familiar with 10,000 recipes from the Bon Appétit database.
In addition, the system understands which ingredients are suitable for specific dishes, depending on the cooking style.
IBM combined this information with data on the composition of products and people's taste preferences, and also added user reviews and comments received during the beta testing of the application.
The application "Chef Watson" will allow cooks to create recipes daily with new, previously unimaginable combinations of flavors and textures, changing ideas about food and cooking.
But, at the same time, "Chef Watson" takes into account various dietary restrictions for diseases such as celiac disease, allergies to certain foods (nuts, dairy products, etc.), and also takes into account special diets, for example, vegetarianism.
The application takes into account all factors and thereby helps people to experiment in the kitchen and realize a variety of culinary fantasies, regardless of their diet.
"We were impressed by the ideas that users had not only creating unusual dishes, but also approaches to solving problems related to cooking, which they were able to implement using the Watson application," says Dr. Stacey C. Rivera, director of Digital Technologies, Bon Appétit.
— With a variety of potential application scenarios – from eliminating gluten to reducing food waste — the Chef Watson app has proven that if you provide chefs with a tool that allows them to be creative in cooking, they will succeed in their business."
"The advantage of Watson is the search for relationships in data arrays that will allow us to see potential combinations of ingredients that we did not know about before —" says Dr. Steve Adams, distinguished engineer and head of IBM Watson division.
- The use of Watson in the culinary art shows how people make discoveries with the help of smart devices.
Our technologies allow us to reach a new level not only for amateur cooks, but also for professionals from many other fields, from biologists to fashion experts."
Over the past year, IBM and Bon Appétit have also improved the application interface based on the scenarios of using "Chef Watson" in creating new recipes.
Now users can start discovering new flavor combinations by choosing just one ingredient.
Based on this data, "Chef Watson" will offer three other ingredients that, according to the cognitive system, will go well with each other.
"Chef Watson" makes experiments with flavors more accessible for cooking, offering ideas for dishes and the number of ingredients, as well as culinary tips that will help chefs choose their own recipe and share their experience with friends.
The application, which was in beta until today, was used by several thousand experienced home cooks who helped expand the IBM Watson knowledge base.
This was achieved, among other things, thanks to user reviews of recipes and a convenient scenario for using the application.
Users of the beta version also found new, useful ways to use the application, for example, to prepare delicious dishes without using certain ingredients or with their replacement due to a dietary regime or health condition; to reduce the amount of food waste by using rare ingredients; to use in the preparation of seasonal or local products in order to popularize the "farm to table" model; as well as to teach children creativity and the principles of healthy nutrition.
Already now you can try "Chef Watson" from IBM for free using the Bon Appétit web application, available at www.ibmchefwatson.com, as well as to get acquainted with several stories from users of "Chef Watson" about what they managed to cook using the service http://ibm.co/1LfvKJH.
