16 hours of training, 15 million euros in prize money and the end of his career at 25 years old a Russian Dota 2 player anonymously spoke about the world of esports.
Career
To become a professional esports player, you need to start tearing up those with whom you play at the amateur level.
If you are the king among friends, you feel the makings – you can move to another level.
The main deposit is the reaction time, which is measured on a special device.
A well trained esports player has 0.13-0.15 seconds.
If initially it is 0.18-0.2 seconds, this is a normal result, you can move forward from it.
The path of an esports player is not a trip to some section, as in other sports.
People who want to become professional players sit down and work 10-12 hours a day.
To become an esports player, you need to be a gamer.
If you donot like computer games, it wonot work.
This cannot be considered as a job.
"League of Legends"
League of Legends is played by 40 million people around the world.
But it canot even be called esports, this game is casual, that is, for morons.
However, there is a lot of money there: big salaries, good conditions for tournaments, strict regulations.
The developer of the League of Legends, Riot Games, has a goal – to hold tournaments at the highest level.
They set the rules themselves, regulate all transfers, there are even contracts there.
There are a lot of restrictions.
If you do not fulfill the conditions, goodbye, you do not participate in tournaments.
Dota 2
The second largest developer is Valve.
There are more than 100 people working there, they hold one tournament a year – The International.
By the way, its final will be very soon – in August.
For the first The International Valve raised $ 1.5 million, and this year the prize fund is more than 15 million.
Esports helps developers promote games among ordinary gamers.
The main money comes from the creators of games – this is a very effective advertising.
But there are also sponsors who also invest in advertising at tournaments.
As a rule, these are manufacturers of mice, keyboards and other devices for games.
Now the ratio of money from developers and sponsorship money in esports is about 8 to 1.
In Dota 2, teams have been paid $ 40 million for all time, 4 of them are not from the developer.
Russia
We have the most Dota players in the world, but there are no normal teams consisting only of Russian players.
You can argue for a long time why this is so, but I will name one reason.
To become a cool esports player, you need to train an insane amount of time.
When you play something for more than 5 hours, you get bored and you need to force yourself to play.
It's hard for Russians.
Even in Ukraine, everything is much better with esports in terms of results.
Probably, this is due to the mentality.
Teams
Another problem of Russian esports is the organization of teams.
If all the Russians in the team are Russian, they will disperse in three months.
Someone will say: "This one is * * * * * * * [gay], I will never play with him again in my life."
In six months they will reconcile.
Scandals happen all the time.
A few years ago, Yaroslav Kuznetsov played in a Ukrainian Russian Dota team, he had a red haired girl.
Sergey Bragin came to the team and said that he would continue to play for it only if Kuznetsov was not there.
Yaroslav left, his red haired girl ran away to Bragin, and their team sucked at the International – took the last place.
Naturally, then everyone reconciled, and the girl returned to Kuznetsov.
In fact, Yaroslav objectively never knew how to play.
Now he works as an analyst: after tournaments, he analyzes games.
Someone is even watching it.
Equipment
The obligation of expensive devices is a myth.
You can play with the most ordinary mouse for 500 rubles and be in the top.
The main indicators of the mouse are a high DPI and the correct frequency so that the cursor moves smoothly across the screen.
Of course, if you have top end equipment, you can play better.
A normal mechanical keyboard costs from 4 thousand rubles: if there are 400-500 clicks per minute on the membrane keyboard, then the nerds make 800 clicks per minute on the mechanical one.
A mouse with flagship characteristics costs 3 thousand rubles.
The best players bring their equipment to the tournaments.
Now they also want to bring their own chairs – they often give some uncomfortable shit at competitions.
Therefore, the chair is also part of the equipment.
Locations
Previously, everything in Dota was carried out in small institutions.
There was a computer club in Kiev, a hotel in Poland, there were not many people.
The only tournament that brought people together was the International.
It was held at the Opera House in Seattle.
Now this tournament has been moved to the Ki Arena basketball stadium.
A year ago, a lot of money appeared in Dota – this is the top discipline for money.
Recently, there was a tournament that was held at the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt.
The 60th thousandth was not filled, but half of the seats were packed.
The system
Valve does not sponsor Dota directly – the money is given by the people themselves, tournament visitors.
A person buys a ticket, and part of the money from the sale goes to the prize fund.
At the same time, the viewer gets not only a pass to the tournament, but also in game clothes.
The ticket costs only $ 10.
Cheats
There are none in Dota and League of Legends.
Cheats are a Counter Strike problem.
It is very easy to get burned, so there are scandals.
Six months ago, there was a scandal with the Fnatic team in CS Go.
At one of the online tournaments, a player under the nickname Flusha got burned a couple of times with a Counter Strike bot: the sight was immediately aimed at the opponent's head.
Everyone * * * * * * [was surprised], but the organizers did not find any evidence and did not disqualify the team.
However, Fnatic is now disliked by everyone, they are humiliated and humiliated, although they were previously considered a respected team.
Counter Strike
Contre tournaments are held up to four times a year, each with a prize fund of 250 thousand dollars.
Plus, there are many more small competitions.
In Counter Strike, people earn money from broadcasts – often this is even the main income.
There was a story about a Polish player with the nickname Pasha Biceps.
He streamed for 3 months in a row, then he looks, and some guy from the Emirates threw off 10 thousand dollars first, 10 minutes later another 10 thousand, and then 5 thousand dollars.
And that's how he got 25 thousand in half an hour.
He had financial problems, he even burst into tears of happiness during the stream.
My longest game session happened four years ago.
I played World of Tanks for exactly two days in a row.
I only got up to go to the toilet.
End of career
The average age of a cyber athlete is 22-23 years.
Usually, the career of a coach ends at 25-26 years old – this is the age when the reaction time worsens and you are beaten by overworked schoolchildren: for example, now a Pakistani guy at 16 years old got into a very strong American EG team.
Where nothing depends on the reaction, you can play at the top level and in 30-35 years.
Then the players have two options – to become either commentators or streamers.
You initially have an audience, you get money from it: from donations, advertising and subscriptions on broadcast services.
For most cyber athletes, streaming is even more profitable than participating in tournaments: if you donot take the first places, you wonot get a lot of money.
You can still become a coach, but there are very few of them.
Of the 16 top teams, only four have coaches.
Not counting the Chinese, whose role as a coach is reduced to the phrase: "Get up from the computer, you need to do exercises."
The coach does not need to be a good player in terms of reaction at all: he just tells the main athletes.
However, this is prohibited at almost all major tournaments.
Injuries
The main damage that occurs in those who do not do exercises is tunnel syndrome.
Sooner or later, this happens to everyone – your hand hurts because you make monotonous movements with the mouse.
If this * * * * * [bullshit] happened to you, you probably wonot be able to play.
You miss at least six months.
The second sore spot is the eyes.
Sometimes you canot blink for 3 minutes in games.
The work of the lacrimal gland is disrupted, * * * * * * [horror] occurs with the eyes.
Tears then flow uncontrollably from the eyes.
This shit is chronic, you canot get rid of it, so it's easier to quit right away.
Transfers
In Dota, everything is controlled by the players themselves.
An athlete in the middle of the season can say: "Go fuck yourself, I went to play for another team."
And no one will stop him.
But there are almost no transitions during the year: everyone wants to get to the International, and an invite is needed there.
To get an invite, you need a permanent composition.
But after the International, the composition of the teams changes by 80%: 4 out of 5 people are new.
In League of Legends, players usually cost a penny 10-15 thousand dollars.
Top – up to a million dollars: 500 thousand the transfer itself, 500 – his salary for two years.
StarCraft
Esports began with this game in 1999.
In Korea, a WCG (World Cyber Games) tournament was held, people came there to see how the Koreans were **** [tearing up].
Then Starcraft 2 came out, everyone switched to it and played quite successfully for four years: there was a lot of money, and the level of players was crazy.
But then the developer (Blizzard) failed to organize tournaments, and the discipline died.
No one is playing Starcraft seriously right now.
Disciplines in esports die very quickly: everything can burn out even in a year.
Koreans
There is an objective reason why they dominate in cyber sports.
They have a huge game base.
There are a lot of players who are directly zadrachivayut for 15-16 hours a day.
Europeans also train a lot, but still not so hard.
In the League of Legends, Samsung sponsors four Korean teams at once with huge money.
They pour in 2.5-3 million dollars a year – this is a lot for esports.
When Starcraft died, the strongest players went to the League of Legends.
Why not Dota?
China dominates Dota, and the Koreans do not want to lose to them.
It is very difficult to enter Dota from scratch.
Salaries
It all depends on the discipline.
In the League of Legends, a good Korean esports player earns 7-8 thousand dollars a month.
European – 2-3 thousand dollars.
But not because they pay less in Europe, but because there are few top teams here.
In the USA – about 5 thousand dollars.
In Russia 1.5 thousand dollars
The thing about esports is that your salary is only a part of your earnings.
First, you can stream and earn much more.
Secondly, you can win tournaments: if in football the prize money does not go to the players, then everything is different here.
From 50 to 100 percent of the prize pool goes to the players.
Doping
It sounds strange, but there is no such problem at all.
Moreover, one of the main sponsors is the energy specialist Monster.
It is customary to slurp it right at tournaments: players are paid extra for this.
There are no drugs that are guaranteed to help you in the game.
Bookmakers
They are associated with the most severe scandal in the "Dota", which occurred two years ago.
Russian player Alexey Berezin wanted to raise money and bet $ 100 against himself.
The coefficient is 3.22.
The next day, he leaked the game, and then burned down: the bet was placed on his girlfriend.
He also had a chip: "I didnot bet against myself, but I didnot bet on myself."
But the bookmaker still passed the information to the organizers of the tournament.
Berezin was first banned for life, then he was reduced to a year, and then the ban was removed altogether.
The Peruvian team was less lucky: they bet 1000 against themselves, the bookmaker conducted an investigation, and these players were disqualified for life.
The bookmaker market is generally very developed.
Even Russian companies have entered there – all sorts of "Baltbets" take bets on"Dota".
FIFA
Computer football is boring to watch, it is only interesting to play it.
FIFA was a discipline at the WCG for nine years, but then the tournament died, and with it the FIFA competitions.
But even there, there was very little prize money – about 10 thousand dollars.
After all, the money comes from the developer, and EA Sports believes that it lives normally without such marketing.
Therefore, there are no normal tournaments with large prize money there now.
The game is in the box.
