Such things as a hamburger, cheeseburger, hot dog, shawarma or shawarma (to whom it is more familiar), sub, and so on, are probably familiar to everyone today.
Street food has long become something familiar and everyday: no one says that it is damn useful, but from time to time many people visit fast food.
It is difficult to avoid this fate when there are more than eighteen thousand seven hundred McDonald's restaurants around the world alone.
KFC has less, but definitely a lot: more than 11,700.
Subway is in third place with 10,109 food outlets (according to data for 2012).
Opening of the first McDonald's in Russia
For as long as there is a street food culture, the list of companies that have become international has exceeded a dozen names: in almost any major city in the world, you can find the same type of cuisine such as McDonalds, KFC, Subway, Carl's Junior, Pizza Hut, and so on.
As a rule, all of them started in America.
Also, a fairly large part of the market is made up of small eateries – here, most likely, we are talking about shawarma, hot dog tents on the streets, small cafes and restaurants where the staff brings to life well known things under their new brands, adding original recipes and expanding the range.
It is difficult to say how things are with fast food in the province – most likely, each individual city has its own situation here, which depends on the location of the city, on its population, and just on chance.
It seems that fast food is most popular among young people, but in fast food and snack bars you can see absolutely any customer: both in terms of age, gender, and income.
One of the main reasons why people choose fast food is accessibility, speed and convenience.
Plus, a small average check.
Today, CR3AM decided to find out what is known about the history of the emergence of fast food culture, about street cuisine: how fast food appeared, who was the first to open a fast food restaurant, and so on.
So, today fast food is perceived as a part of American society that has come to us.
This is only partially supported by the truth: the fast food culture was known long before the colonization of America, but it is thanks to the United States that this very culture has acquired the familiar look we have today.
One of the first societies to use the practice of street cooking was the society of the Roman Empire: at that time there were a large number of poor people in the cities who did not have their own full fledged homes, which means that there was no kitchen or fuel to cook food.
By the way, such a well known dish of Italian national cuisine as pizza was originally a dish for the poor.

A later mention of fast food at that time refers to England: at the beginning of the XII century in London, on the banks of the River Thames, there was a so called "fast food area": of course, this is what we can call it now.
These were small eateries that worked around the clock – it was a great place for travelers to fill their bellies and buy food for the further road.
Of course, it was not fast food in the modern sense of the word, but fast food elements were already there then.
In addition, the variety of establishments formed a flexible price system, where everyone could find something closer to their wallet.
But this is all a distant story, and the reader, most likely, wants to get to the very essence: when and where was the first modern fast food opened?
One of the main fast food products today is considered a hamburger.
And, it may turn out that this is not an American type of cuisine at all.
The history of the hamburger is very prosaic and seems to be closely connected with German culture: the inhabitants of the city of Hamburg in the English transcription were called hamburgers (Hamburg – Hamburger by analogy with London – Londoner).
Many residents of Hamburg immigrated to the United States and that's how the type of food that they brought to the society of the New World began to bear the name of the hamburger.

We can say that the first company that implemented the very mechanism of fast food, when you get everything quickly and without unnecessary hassle, was the firm Horn & Hardart.
Joseph Horn, an immigrant from Germany, and his American friend Frank Hardart opened a small restaurant in Philadelphia in June 1902, which served food using vending machines.
The company popularized the idea of "takeaway" food as opposed to home cooking.
However, their idea was not new – they borrowed it from the German company Berlin's Quisisana Automat.
Horn & Hardart were especially popular during the Great Depression, when macaroni and cheese, baked beans and spinach with cream were already boring everyone.
But soon automatic establishments were ousted from the market by competitors with a "human face" – service and waiters became fashionable.
Hamburg automata are the predecessors of the American system

When was the first staff filled restaurant that produced hamburgers opened?
It happened in the city of Wichita in Kansas.
In 1921, Billy Ingram opened the first restaurant where you could try a hamburger.
The restaurant was called White Castle.
It should be noted that the company exists to this day.
In 1921, Bally was selling his hamburgers for 5 cents apiece.
It is worth noting that it was quite early – the first McDonald's was opened much later – in 1940 in California, in the city of San Bernardino.
The first KFC in Kentucky in 1952, and the first Subway in 1960 in Connecticut.
Of course, today the White Castle company is far from a competitor to such market whales as McDonald's, KFC or Subway.
But, we can say that it produces some of the most original hamburgers, since it is a hamburger production company with almost a century of history.

But the one who invented the hamburger was not the one who first opened the restaurant, as is often the case.
The question of who was the inventor of the hamburger is still open – there are about ten different theories.
According to White Castle, the inventor of the hamburger was a German Otto Kuase (Otto Kuase).
In 1891, he allegedly prepared sandwiches with a cutlet fried in butter and flavored with fried egg for the first time.
German sailors later stopped adding egg to this dish.
Another version of the hamburger's origin is officially certified by the Library of Congress: according to their information, the creator of the hamburger in 1900 was Louis Lassen, the owner of Louis' Lunch – a small trailer that cooked food in the city of New Haven, Connecticut.
New York magazine: "This dish had no name for a long time, until some noisy sailors from Hamburg gave their name to this bun with a cutlet."
The story of Louis Lassen says: a customer came to Louis and ordered a hot lunch.
Since Louis had run out of steaks, he fried ground beef and put it between two toasts.
So there was a hamburger.

McDonald's
One of the largest, and perhaps the most famous fast food chains in the world is, of course, McDonald's.
The company was founded by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in 1940.
At first it was a barbecue restaurant, but already in 1948 the restaurant was converted into a fast food outlet specializing in hamburgers.
Everything finally changed in 1955 with the arrival of Ray Kroc: Ray met McDonald's three years earlier, and, interested in the idea of maskimally fast customer service, began selling franchises for the opening of fast food restaurants under the McDonald's brand throughout the states.
Later, in 1961, Kroc bought all the rights to own the brand.
The Burger King chain was inspired by the McDonalds chain it was after visiting the McDonald's restaurants.
In 1953, Keith Kramer and his wife's uncle Matthew Burns opened their first restaurant.
After a while, despite the success of the company, things did not go very well, so Kramer and Burns sold their business to two other owners James McLamore and David Edgerton.
Already in 1959, the new owners had five restaurants.
And a year later, in 1960, the Burger King brand began to spread thanks to the franchise system.
Now it is one of the largest fast food chains in the world.
Originally, KFC is an abbreviation of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The company was founded in 1950 by Colonel Sanders.
Interestingly, Garland Sanders was never an officer, although he served in the army – the status of colonel was awarded to him "for his contribution to the development of roadside catering".
The prehistory of KFC began in 1930 with the purchase of a roadside cafe by Garland Sanders in Corbin, Kentucky.
And it is at the same time that Sanders begins to work on his famous recipe.
Later, in 1952, Sanders, after a long trip around the country, enters into an agreement with Pete Harman from Salt Lake City – this is how the sale of Sanders ' branded products in general food restaurants begins.
Subway
Contrary to expectations, the etymology of the name Subway has nothing to do with the subway.
The prefix " sub " appeared because of the shape of the product sold under the Subway trademark – these are elongated sandwiches similar to a submarine – submarine in English.
The history of this chain began in 1965, when 17 year old Fred DeLuca, with the sponsorship of Peter Buck, opened the first restaurant of the future Subway chain in Connecticut.
Today, Subway has taken the first place in the world among fast food chains in terms of the number of restaurants in the network.
Carl's Jr.
Despite the fact that Carl's Jr. they are not the most popular brand of fast food, however, they stood almost at the very foundation of the industry, if we talk about the time of the formation of the main companies of the fast food restaurant market – the history of Carl's Jr. began in 1941, when Karl Karcher opened several shops selling hot dogs on the streets of Los Angeles.
Later, the chain grew, the product range changed – the hamburger also became the main dish.
