BMW 5 Series (E39)
The company was founded by Karl Friedrich Rapp, the BMW industrial company was officially registered on July 20, 1917, but initially as an aircraft engine manufacturer, Bayerische Flugzeug Werke.
The Munich — Milbertshofen district was chosen because it was located close to Gustav Otto's Flugmaschinenfabrik — a German aircraft manufacturer.
Since 1929, the blue and white round BMW logo, which is still used (shown at the top right), for convenience, begins to be interpreted as an airplane propeller against a blue sky background.
BMW claims that the white and blue colors on the logo are taken from the flag of Bavaria.
In 1916, the company signed a contract for the production of V12 engines .
Needing additional funding, Rapp receives the support of Camillo Castiglioni and Max Fritz, the company is recreated as Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH.
Overextension caused difficulties, Rapp left the company, and the management of the company was taken over by the Austrian industrialist Franz Joseph Popp in 1917.
In 1919, Franz Diemer set the first BMW world record by climbing to an altitude of 9760 meters in an airplane with a BMW engine.
The Versailles Peace Treaty of 1919 banned the production of aircraft in Germany.
Otto closed his factory and BMW switched to the production of brakes for trains.
BMW is building its current main building east of Munich's Oberwiesenfeld Airport (today it is the city's Olympic Center).
In 1923, the first BMW motorcycle was produced at the factory in Munich.
The first intercontinental flight to Persia took place on an aircraft equipped with BMW engines.
In 1926, the Rohrbach Ro VII seaplane with BMW VI engines sets five world records.
the year is 1927.
This year, 87 world records were set in aviation.
29 of them are on planes with BMW engines.
In 1928, BMW acquired an automobile plant in Eisenach (Thuringia), and with it a license to produce a small car called Dixi.
The company enters into a license agreement for the construction of radial engines with the American manufacturer of aircraft engines Pratt & Whitney.
1929 Dixi — the name of the first BMW car.
It was developed in Munich, like all subsequent BMW products, but cars were produced in Eisenach until the forties.
Ernst Henne becomes the fastest motorcyclist in the world with a BMW engine.

After the war[edit / edit wiki text]
BMW Alpina B5
The BMW concern, which was powerful in the pre war era, found itself in a critical situation after the Second World War, largely due to the ban on the production of aircraft engines that formed the basis of its business and the destruction or occupation of the concern's factories in Munich and Eisenach by Germany's opponents during the World War.
Thus, the Munich Milbertshofen plant, according to the decision of the American occupation forces, was subject to demolition[8].
Like other German automobile companies with an industrial base destroyed by the Second World War, BMW took years to revive as a serious car manufacturer: only in 1962 the company released a car on the market that allowed it to fulfill this task[9].
BMW's strategy in the post war years was to try to improve things by producing motorcycles with low power, since the Allies allowed BMW to produce motorcycles with an engine capacity of only up to 250 cm3 after the war, and also banned the production of large and comfortable sedans.[source not specified 779 days]
In addition, the company lost its factory in Eisenach, which remained in the territory occupied by Soviet troops, and then in the newly formed GDR.
However, the market situation and the attempts made by BMW management to restore the production of aircraft engines led BMW to the very edge of the abyss and almost ended with the establishment of control over it by a well — known competitor Mercedes Benz.
Production of light motorcycles[edit / edit wiki text]
However, the company's staff managed to save BMW by producing household goods and bicycles, which was reflected in the decision of the Americans to cancel the decision to demolish the plant and the subsequent permit for the production of light motorcycles.
So in 1948, the R24 motorcycle from Munich became the first post war BMW product.
Like its predecessor of the 1930s, the R24 was equipped with a BMW branded gimbal transmission, was painted black and had a white upholstery of the stroller.
Unlike its predecessor, this product had a single cylinder engine with a working volume of only 247 cm3, a much lower price, and, as a result, was much more affordable and was in great demand among Germans in need of vehicles.
By 1951, BMW was producing more than 18 thousand of these motorcycles per year, which brought profit and allowed the development of a new model — the R51 already with a 2 cylinder opposed engine[10].
Significant dates in the history of BMW[edit / edit wiki text]
