William Stanley Milligan (English: William Stanley Milligan, known as Billy Milligan; February 14, 1955, Miami Beach — December 12, 2014, Columbus[1]) was an American citizen, one of the most famous people with a diagnosis of "multiple personality" in the history of psychiatry.
In the late 1970s, he was tried in a well known trial in the state of Ohio, USA.
Milligan was accused of several robberies and three rapes, but his lawyers declared their client's insanity, claiming that two of his alternate personalities committed these crimes without Milligan's knowledge.
As a result, he was acquitted, but sent for psychiatric treatment "until he recovers".
Billy Milligan became the first person acquitted during the trial due to the diagnosis of "multiple personality" 2].
In 1988, after ten years in a psychiatric clinic, Milligan was recognized as recovered and released[2].
The story of Billy Milligan is told in the documentary novels by Daniel Keyes "The Multiple Minds of Billy Milligan" and "Milligan's Wars".
Milligan had 24 full fledged personalities; 10 of them were the main ones: Bill Milligan (main personality), Arthur, Ragen Vadaskovinich, Allen, Tommy, David, Kristin, Christopher, Adalana, Danny.

Early years[edit / edit wiki text]
Milligan's mother, Dorothy, grew up in rural Ohio and lived in Circleville with her husband, Dick Jonas.
After their divorce, Dorothy moved to Miami, where she began working as a singer.
In Miami, she met and got together with a married comedian Johnny Morrison, a Jew. [3]
In October 1953, Dorothy and Johnny had a son, Jimbo.
On February 14, 1955, their second son, William Stanley, later known as Billy Milligan, was born in Miami Beach.
In December 1956, Katie Jo was born.
By that time, Johnny was 36 years old.
According to biographer Daniel Keyes, " ... the medical expenses crushed Johnny.
He borrowed a lot of money, drank a lot.
He was hospitalized due to alcoholism and depression in 1958."
There was an unsuccessful suicide attempt — according to Keyes, " Dorothy found him fallen, and there was a bottle of whiskey on the table and an empty bottle of sleeping pills on the floor."
A few months later, on January 17, 1959, Johnny committed suicide — he was poisoned by carbon monoxide.
Dorothy and her children returned from Miami to Circleville, where she re entered into an alliance with Dick Jonas.
The marriage lasted about a year.
In 1962, Dorothy met Chalmer Milligan (1927-1988).
Chalmer's first wife divorced him because of "gross neglect".
Chalmer had two daughters, one of whom, Turban — was the same age as Billy.
On October 27, 1963, Dorothy and Chalmer were married.
Chalmer was later accused of raping Billy.
According to Billy's testimony, already at the age of eight, his other personalities appeared it was when his stepfather tied him up in a barn and raped him for the first time.
Arrest and trial[edit / edit wiki text]
Milligan during the trial
In 1975, for armed robbery and robbery of a pharmacy, Milligan was imprisoned in the Lebanon Correctional Institution of Ohio.
In early 1977, he was released on parole.
However, in October 1977, Milligan was arrested again.
This time for the rape of three women on the campus of the Ohio State University.
Milligan was identified by one of the victims from a photo in a police file, and his fingerprints were found on the other victim's car.
Since Milligan used a weapon, several units of which were found during a search of his home, he also violated the conditions of his parole.
As a result, he was convicted on " ... three counts of kidnapping, three counts of robbery and four counts of violence."
During the preparation of his defense by Dr. Willis K. Driscoll conducted a psychological examination, as a result of which Milligan's condition was assessed as acute schizophrenia.
After that, he was examined by Dorothy Turner, a psychologist at the Southwest Community Mental Health Center in Columbus, Ohio.
During this examination, Turner came to the conclusion that Milligan suffers from multiple personality disorder.
Milligan's public defenders, Gary Schweikart and Judy Stevenson, obtained a declaration of the defendant's insanity, after which he was transferred to a psychiatric clinic "until his mental health returns".
Deprivation of liberty[edit / edit wiki text]
Milligan was placed in one of the state psychiatric hospitals, the Athens Mental Health Center, where, according to the court, he did not receive sufficient help for recovery.
While he was in this hospital, Milligan reported having ten different personalities.
Later, psychiatrist David Kola discovered 14 more individuals labeled as "undesirable".
Among the first ten was Arthur, a prim and arrogant Englishman; Allen, a fraudster and manipulator; Ragen Vadaskovinic, a Yugoslav communist, a "keeper of hatred"; and Adalana, a 19 year old lesbian who craved intimacy and was subsequently found guilty of rapes.
Alter personality[edit / edit wiki text]
The description is based on the book "The Multiple Minds of Billy Milligan"by Daniel Keyes.
Billy Milligan's alter personalities appeared at the age of 3-4 years (an unnamed boy with whom he played, and Kristin, who took care of her younger sister).
The number of personalities increased at the age of 8-9 years, when little Billy was repeatedly raped and beaten by his stepfather.
10 individuals were considered basic (the description is given as of 1977-1978, during treatment).
Billy the original William Stanley Milligan, is the main personality, is suicidal.
Arthur Smith is 22 years old, a refined, educated Englishman.
An expert in science and medicine, with a focus on hematology.

With the help of logic and deduction, he found out that he was not alone in Milligan's body, and identified the other personalities.
Along with Ragen, he took responsibility for the common body — except for dangerous situations.

He takes consciousness to take the pain of others.
Kristin is a 3 year old Englishwoman, one of the first to manifest Billy's personality and the first to learn about the existence of someone else.

She was declared an undesirable person by Arthur: she was forever forbidden to "get up on the spot" (that is, to keep consciousness) and ever take time.
13 other personalities were declared undesirable by Arthur and Ragen for certain actions (antisocial behavior, violation of rules, etc.).

Post liberation activities[edit / edit wiki text]
In 1988 (or 1991), after more than 10 years of intensive treatment in medical institutions of the state of Ohio, Billy Milligan was recognized as "whole" and released.
It is known that in 1996 he lived in California, owned a small film studio "Stormy Life Productions" and was going to make a short film (which, apparently, was never released).
Later, he declared bankruptcy, then the place of residence and occupation of William Milligan are unknown, all his former acquaintances lost contact with him (he did not even receive his money left after paying off debts in bankruptcy)[2].
According to his lawyer, Bruce Tabit, "on some walls of the rooms of his house there are beautiful frescoes, others are covered with mathematical formulas.
It's beyond human ability to know everything about Billy Milligan."
