Animals of the Eurasian taiga
Taiga is a coniferous forest covering vast areas in the north of Europe and Asia and North America.
We will tell you about the animals that live in the forests of North America in particular.
Let's first get acquainted with the fauna of the taiga of Eurasia.
The fauna of the taiga is not as rich and diverse as the fauna of broad leaved forests.
Among the mammals found here are elk, musk deer, squirrel, flying squirrel, chipmunk, white hare, brown bear, lynx, column, ermine, weasel.
Typical taiga birds are capercaillie, Ural owl, hawk owl, shaggy owl, three toed woodpecker, cedar, bullfinch, white winged crossbill and spruce crossbill.
There are also reptiles in the taiga — an ordinary viper, a viviparous lizard, and on the southern outskirts of the taiga there is a snake with a muzzle.
Among amphibians, the four toed newt is widely distributed, there are sharp faced and grass frogs.
Due to the severity of the climate, living conditions in the taiga are difficult.
But taiga animals are well adapted to them.
Many animals grow thick and long fur in winter.
And the snow cover for some animals serves as a good shelter, they arrange temporary shelters in it.
For example, a white hare and a black grouse spend the night buried in the snow, and in severe frosts, snowstorms remain there for a day.
The deep and loose snow cover in the taiga makes it difficult for animals to move.
However, many animals have adapted to this as well.
The white hare, lynx and wolverine have wide paws.
In addition, in winter, they grow long, stiff hair on their paws, and they walk through the snow without falling through.
Some birds also have peculiar adaptations to life in the taiga.
For example, in the grouse and grouse, the fingers are trimmed with a horn shaped fringe.
In winter, this fringe grows back and helps the birds to stay on the icy branches of trees.
The taiga is rich in food reserves not only in summer, but also in winter.
Reindeer dig up the snow and take out the lichen yagel from under it.
White hares feed on the bark of trees and shrubs.
The main food of many taiga animals is the seeds of coniferous trees, especially pine nuts.
They are eaten not only by birds, squirrels, chipmunks and other rodents, but also by some predators: bears, sables, and sometimes even foxes and wolverines.
Although the taiga is rich in food, it is not so easy to get it in the winter.
Therefore, the taiga inhabitants have developed a variety of adaptations that allow them to survive this harsh time of the year.
So, squirrels and cedar birds collect food supplies for the winter, and bears and badgers hibernate.
The chipmunk stores food in the fall, sleeps in the winter.
He eats his reserves in the spring after waking up.
In summer, mushrooms and berries play an important role in the diet of taiga animals; small and medium sized predators hunt rodents.
Elk One of the most characteristic representatives of the taiga fauna — the elk chooses low lying places with young growth of hardwoods for its settlement.
He is especially fond of old burns, logging areas, the shores of forest rivers and lakes, swampy swamps.
Moose feed on young needles, tree foliage, shoots, bark of trees and shrubs and near water plants!
The ability of these large animals to live in swamps, often in real bogs, where neither a horse nor a person will pass, is amazing.
A special device of hooves helps them to walk through the swamps.
For every square centimeter of the surface of the wide hoof of an elk, there is only about 400 g of the animal's weight, which gives the elk the opportunity to move through the swampy areas of the taiga.
In addition, the huge strength of the moose allows it to quickly and easily pull its legs out of the marshy and viscous soil.
The animal's strength is also manifested in its jumps: it freely jumps four meter ditches and two meter fences.
Due to its strength, an adult moose is not afraid of wolves.
He stands with his back to the tree, and the wolf alone will not dare to approach his front legs.
Reindeer live in the northern parts of the taiga.
They spend the winter in the forest, and in the summer they migrate to open places, to moss swamps, to the banks of rivers and lakes.
In mountainous areas, deer rise above the forest, where they find abundant food and escape from midges blood sucking insects.
Squirrel.
The smallest forest ungulate animal is musk deer from the group of deer.
Musk deer have no horns, but the upper canines are strongly developed.
In males, they protrude far outwards.
Musk deer feeds mainly on woody lichens.
The male has a pouch on the abdominal side containing musk — a special substance with a strong smell that is used in perfumery.
The most valuable fur — bearing animal, the sable, lives in the most remote parts of the taiga, most often in areas overgrown with tall trees, littered with windfall and dead wood, crossed by streams and rivers.
Sable also loves impassable thickets of cedar elfin on the rocky scree of mountain spurs.
After these thickets are covered with a thick layer of snow, the sable finds in them a great shelter from its enemies, and it is almost impossible to get it there.
The sable reluctantly climbs trees and arranges its nests under tree roots, in hollows located low from the ground, or in clefts of rocks.
The sable is distinguished by its attachment to the area of the taiga forest that it once chose for life.
Another small taiga predator — kolonok is distributed almost throughout the taiga.
There are especially many of these animals in south eastern Siberia and the Altai.
The column makes burrows under stumps, dead wood and stones.
It feeds on small rodents, birds, frogs, fish, destroys bird nests by eating eggs.
The lynx also belongs to the taiga predators.
In Siberia, this is the only type of wild cat.
Like most cats, it leads a terrestrial lifestyle, but it climbs trees perfectly.
The lynx feeds mainly on rodents, hares, and sometimes even attacks large animals.
Another peculiar taiga predator is also dangerous — the wolverine.
This clumsy, bear like animal belongs to the family of martens.
It mainly feeds on carrion, but sometimes hunts such large animals as roe deer and reindeer.
The wolverine canot run fast after them, but it has such amazing endurance that it is able to drive these magnificent runners to complete exhaustion.
Most of the year, the wolverine leads a wandering lifestyle and therefore does not have a permanent shelter.
She rests wherever she has to: between rocks, in caves, tree hollows, in a dense thicket.
A brown bear.
The most characteristic animal of the taiga forests is interesting the flying squirrel, which lives in the most remote corners of the taiga among the high stemmed forest.
Outwardly, it resembles an ordinary squirrel, but on the sides of the body, its skin forms a fur covered fold.
During the jump, this fold stretches and allows the animal to make a planning flight for considerable distances.
This animal arranges its nests in hollows.
A valuable fur — bearing animal a large rodent muskrat was brought from North America to the swampy areas of the south of the Siberian taiga.
The muskrat feeds on aquatic plants, and digs holes on the banks of reservoirs or builds so called huts over the water surface from plant stems.
Most of the time, a well acclimatized animal in the taiga spends in the water in search of food.
Musk deer.
Birds living in the taiga are adapted to taiga conditions in their own way.
Especially interesting are the bedbugs.
They feed almost exclusively on the seeds of coniferous trees.
The structure of the beak of the tick indicates a predilection for such food.
The ends of the upper and lower mandibles of this bird cross and form a kind of tool that allows you to easily extract seeds from the cones of spruce, larch and even pine.
Mites do not feed their chicks with insects, as most small birds do, including grain eaters, but with crushed seeds.
Unlike all other northern birds, mites hatch chicks in winter, when there are many cones with mature seeds on coniferous trees.
Woodpeckers play an important role in the life of many taiga birds.
The taiga is poor in natural hollows, and some birds arrange nests in hollows hollowed out earlier by woodpeckers.
The most characteristic woodpeckers of the taiga are the yellow, or black woodpecker (the largest of the woodpeckers of our country), and the three toed woodpecker, which has not four fingers on its paw, like all other woodpeckers, but only three fingers.
Various species of owls live in the taiga.
Among them, the hawk owl is especially interesting.
Other owls are nocturnal birds, and the hawk owl also hunts during the daytime.
All taiga owls feed on small and medium sized mammals and birds.
Capercaillie.
The taiga is also rich in waterfowl.
The most closely related to the taiga is the gogol duck.
Most waterfowl make nests near reservoirs on the ground.
However, the flood on the northern rivers, as a rule, is later.
Hollow water during the nesting period floods huge spaces, so gogol has developed a special device.
This duck makes its nests high above the ground — in the hollows of trees, which are not reached by water during river flooding.
Two species of reptiles live in the taiga — the viper and the lizard, and both of them differ in that they give birth to live cubs, and do not lay eggs like other representatives of this group.
Such a feature of taiga vipers and lizards is adaptation to a cold climate.
There are a lot of different mosquitoes and other blood — sucking diptera insects in the taiga the so called midge.
The conditions there are favorable for their development: the larvae hatch and develop in numerous swamps, lakes and other reservoirs; the usual calm in the taiga contributes to their development.
There are a lot of ticks in the taiga.
Some types of ticks are very harmful and even dangerous, as they carry infectious diseases.
The owl.
The taiga abounds with valuable commercial animals and birds.
Therefore, hunting is highly developed there.
In the first place in the fur trade is a squirrel.
Her fur is warm, light and beautiful.
The second place belongs to the hare belyak.
The taiga fox also has good fur, but this animal is rare here.
Columns and ermine are of great importance in the fur trade.
Sable fur is one of the best types of fur.
Previously, this animal was predationally exterminated in the taiga by excessive hunting.
Currently, a lot of work has been done in our country to restore the former distribution of sable and increase its number.
Birds are of considerable importance for hunting in the taiga: grouse, capercaillie, white partridges, ducks, geese.
Fishing is also widely developed within the taiga zone.
Whitefish (muksun, ryapushka, nelma), burbot, pike, omul, perch are of the greatest commercial importance here.
