Galileo Galilei was the first to use a telescope to observe celestial objects
An astronomer (in the speech of professionals, there is also an outdated accent astronomer[1][2]) is a scientist specializing in the field of astronomy.
Professional astronomers are people who are engaged in astronomy professionally.
Modern methods of astronomy require a good knowledge of mathematical methods, so professional astronomers usually have a corresponding higher specialized education.
They work in observatories, research centers or universities.
Scientists of this specialty spend most of their time in scientific research and information analysis; some scientists combine professional employment with teaching and popularization work.
It is significant that, due to the vastness of astronomy as a science, the general category of astronomers is divided into many narrow specialties: for example, cosmologists, planetary scientists, astrophysicists, astrochemists, astrobiologists, etc.
The number of professional astronomers (in relation to specialists in other natural sciences) is relatively small.
For example, the American Astronomical Society, which is the main organization of professional astronomers in North America, has approximately 6,500 members.
This includes scientists from other fields, such as physics, geology, mechanical engineering, whose research interests are somehow related to astronomy.
The International Astronomical Union includes almost 10,000 participants from 87 countries of the world.
Historically, astronomy was more concerned with the classification and description of phenomena in the sky, while later astrophysics, using the laws of physics, explained these celestial phenomena observed throughout the history of mankind through their physical essence.
Currently, astronomy is inseparable from mathematics, physics and cosmology.
At the same time, the latest astronomical discoveries constantly pose new questions to scientists that require both further understanding of the general structure of the universe, and the development of methodological approaches and scientific strategies for studying the Universe.
Amateur astronomers[edit / edit wiki text]

Amateur astronomy is one of the types of hobby (hobby), which involves observation, registration and study that is, the study of celestial objects and phenomena by various methods.
Amateur astronomy is one of the activities that does not bring monetary income and does not require special education or university training.
There are a significant number of amateur astronomers all over the world, including in Russia in particular.
Literally in every major city of Russia (as well as in other countries, to a greater or lesser extent), you can find communities of astronomy lovers, although they are not always organized into a club or circle.
Amateur astronomers occupy a very specific niche in the study of the world.
The main focus is on the acquisition of personal (including aesthetic) experience, impressions and knowledge.
In the second place the exchange of knowledge and impressions with other amateurs, the organization of communities for joint observations, the manufacture and modernization of tools.
There are cases when amateurs have managed to make a significant contribution to the knowledge of the universe.
This includes, for example, the works of the amateur astronomer of the XIX century E. Bykhanov.
Modern astronomy[edit / edit wiki text]
Contrary to the classical opinion of the old time that astronomers spend most of their time peering into the telescope during the night, currently professional astronomers use an eyepiece and visual observations are extremely rare.
In most cases, a special camera is used, which is in the focus of the telescope.
In particular, it allows you to take pictures of celestial objects with a long (up to many hours) exposure, due to which it is possible to photograph extremely dim objects of deep space, invisible to the naked human eye.
Computer programs are used to process digital photographs.
Before the advent of CCD matrices, during almost the entire twentieth century, photographic plates and photographic film were common in astronomy.
Most of the time at large observatories is spent not receiving material for research (data, photographs, measurements), but analyzing and processing them.
