The Lumiere brothers '"cinematography" triumphantly marched around the world, and Russia did not stay away from this.
In 1886, the French introduced the cinema to Russians, and in 1898 the first Russian films were born.
The history of Russian cinema is peculiar.
Harsh mores plus the characteristic features of certain political periods have left their mark on Russian cinema.
However, this did not prevent the appearance of bright stars and talented film directors in the Russian film industry.
At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, short films that were shot in Russia were mainly devoted to the life of the royal family, besides they were censored.
Foreign films popular in that era were broadcast in the cinemas that appeared.
The first Russian film is considered to be the picture "Ponizovaya Volnitsa" ("Stenka Razin", "Stenka Razin and the Princess").
The film was directed by Vladimir Romashkov, and the screenwriter was Vasily Goncharov.
The film was directed and financed by the entrepreneur Alexander Drankov.
How it was possible to pass through the censorship the topic about the free Cossack Stepan Razin, history is silent.
The picture, of course, went through a tough "cleaning".
The film "Stenka Razin" was silent, the scenes lasted literally a minute, and the film itself had a duration of about 6 minutes.
But the spectacle for that time was grandiose, about a hundred theater artists were busy in the "battle" scenes, and the audience went to the cinema for the premiere in a stream.
By 1910, Russian cinema had found its face.
There are quite a lot of films in various genres – detective, melodrama, historical and military themes.
The first movie stars appeared in Russia - Vera Kholodnaya, Ivan Mozzhukhin, Vladimir Maksimov.
The next period of the development of Russian cinema is the years of the revolution and the civil war.
It was difficult to call proletarian art highly artistic, nevertheless, it aroused interest even abroad.
One of the most striking Russian names that has entered the history of world cinema is the name of Sergei Eisenstein, the author of the films "Battleship Potemkin "(1925) and" October " (1927).
The ideology of the world revolution aroused great interest among the world community at that time.
Sergey Eisenstein
The period of the 30s 40s was ambiguous.
On the one hand, there is strict Stalinist censorship, heroic and patriotic themes, ideological overtones.
On the other hand, bright comedies and new stars, such as actress Lyubov Orlova, director Grigory Alexandrov.
The films released at that time were practically unknown in the world.
The role of the "iron Curtain" also played a negative perception of life in Russia in Western countries.
The residents of the USSR themselves loved their cinema very much.
Cinemas were popular and often filled to capacity.
Bright names in the world of Russian cinema in the 60s 80s were directors Andrey Tarkovsky, Sergey Parajanov, Kira Muratova.
Famous films are "Solaris", "Two fighters", "Cranes are Flying", "Spring on Zarechnaya Street" and many others.
Another turning point in the history of Russian cinema was outlined in the 90s, in the era of perestroika.
Films of that time were distinguished by provocativeness, sometimes excessive negativism.
Even today, many critics are inclined to think that the history of Russian cinema is far from over.
The search for style and identity continues in Russian cinema.

Evgeny 12.01.2015 16: 41 found a typo: "In 1986, the French introduced the cinema to the Russians, and in 1898".
It should not be 1986, but 1886.
And so everything is fine.
