O. Henry is a pseudonym of the writer.
His real name was William Sidney Porter.
At the age of three, he was left without a mother, and his father's own sister was engaged in his upbringing.
After graduating from school, adult life began – it was necessary to earn bread.
At first, he was assigned as an apprentice to an apothecary.
Having mastered the pharmaceutical knowledge, he leaves for Texas.
By that time, William had managed to get married.
But to support a family, you needed money, and you canot earn much as a pharmacist.
He had to try on the role of a cowboy on a ranch, work as a draftsman in the land administration.
Then he got a job as an accountant and cashier at the Austin bank.
The first literary experiments date back to the early 1880s.
In 1894, William began publishing the humorous weekly Rolling Stone, almost entirely filling it with his own essays, jokes, poems and drawings.
However, the magazine did not last long.
In 1895, Porter was accused of a shortage, he was dismissed from the bank and brought to court.
Although his relatives compensated for his embezzlement, it did not help to avoid punishment.
After being accused of embezzlement, he was on the run, first in Honduras, and then in South America.
After the death of his wife, he returned to the United States, where he was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison.
The three year imprisonment was not in vain.
Here William worked in the infirmary and continued his literary work.
It was at this time that he thought about a pseudonym.
In the end, he chose the option of O. Henry (sometimes you can find the wrong spelling O ' Henry — in the manner of an Irish surname).
According to one version, Henry is a character in an article from the secular news in a newspaper, and the initial O. stands for Olivier (French name Olivier).
Several of the writer's short stories have been published under the name Olivier Henry.
According to other sources, this is the name of the famous French pharmacist Etienne Ocean Henry, whose medical reference book was popular at that time.
The third version was put forward by the writer and scientist Guy Davenport: "O. Henry" is nothing but an abbreviation of the name of the prison where the author was sitting Ohio Penitentiary.
William wrote his first short story under this pseudonym, "Dick the Whistler's Christmas Gift" (1899) in prison.
The only novel by O. Henry, "Kings and Cabbage", was published in 1904.
In subsequent years, was published collections of short stories, "the Four million" (1906), "Burning lamp" and "Heart of the West" (1907), "voice of the city" and "Noble rogue" (1908), "Paths of destiny" and "favorites" (1909,) "Fine job" and "Kolovraschenie" (1910).
He wrote 273 story, which have been translated into many languages.

His wise thoughts have long become aphorisms.
"Every self respecting thief will first get used to someone else's good, and then begin to appropriate it."
"Kindred Spirits"
"Such is the property of the female sex – to cry with grief, to cry with joy and to shed tears in the absence of both."
"The Gifts of the Magi"
"...Life consists of tears, sighs and smiles, and sighs prevail."
"The Gifts of the Magi"
"An empty stomach is the surest antidote to an overflowing heart."
"The Gifts of the Magi"
"A man is something sitting at a table with a knife and fork in his hands."
"The Gifts of the Magi"
"Women always give men stunning surprises."
"The Gifts of the Magi"
"When we love ourselves, the word "love" is synonymous with self sacrifice and renunciation.
When the neighbors who live behind the wall love, this word means self conceit and impudence.
"Kings and cabbage", "Peaches"
"A person can get into bad company in two cases of life – when he is penniless and when he is rich."
"The Noble Rogue"
"There are two cases in life that do not know how they end: when a man drinks for the first time and when a woman drinks for the last time."
"Three times in my life a woman is like stepping on the clouds, and my legs canot feel joy: the first time when she comes down the aisle for the second time when she enters the sanctuary of Bohemia, and the third time she leaves from your neighbor's garden with a dead chicken in his hands."
"Cabbages and kings", "the Abduction of Medora"
"It's not about the road we choose; what's inside of us makes us choose the road."
"The roads we choose"
"A sleeping man is a sight that can make angels cry.
What are his brains, biceps, checkbook, aplomb, patronage and family ties worth now?
He is a toy in the hands of an enemy, and even more so – a friend.
And as attractive as a hired nag when it stands leaning against the wall of the opera house at half past twelve at night and dreams of the expanses of the Arabian deserts.
A sleeping woman is a completely different matter.
We donot care what she looks like, as long as she stays in this state longer.
"How Black Bill was hiding"
"Friendship between men... is an ancient historical virtue, born in the days when people had to protect each other from flying turtles and lizards with eighty foot tails.
People keep this habit to this day and stand up for each other until the bellboy comes and tells them that all these animals were just imagined by them."
"Friend Telemak"
"Nature moves in a circle.
Art is in a straight line.
Everything natural is rounded, everything artificial is angular.
A person who gets lost in a snowstorm, without realizing it, describes circles; the feet of a citizen, accustomed to rectangular rooms and squares, lead him away in a straight line from himself. "
O. Henry lived a short life, he suffered from diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver.
He died at the age of 47, in 1910.
But his books continued to be reprinted.
And in 1918, the O. Henry Literary Prize was established.
His works serve as the basis for many films.
In 1952, the Americans filmed "The Leader of the Redskins and Others" based on the writer's stories, and in 1962, the Soviet director Leonid Gaidai presented "Business People".

And this is my favorite:
Added at 19: 33
Among the biographical paintings, it is worth noting the 1933 feature film directed by Lev Kuleshov "The Great Comforter".
Today, a museum of his memory has been created in the United States, and the prison yard, where prisoner 30664 once walked in a circle, has been named after the writer.

each novel can be divided into quotes.
the most famous in wide circles is "Bolivar canot stand two" - "The roads we choose"
But there are much more clever thoughts that are not so widely known.
And the moral in every fable story.

"Turn on the light, I donot want to go home in the dark."
© O. HENRY.
Soapy moved uneasily on his bench in Madison Square.
When flocks of wild geese stretch high in the sky at night, when women who do not have seal coats become affectionate to their husbands, when Sonya starts fidgeting on her park bench, it means that winter is coming.
The yellow leaf fell into Soapy's lap.
It was the calling card of Santa Claus; this old man is kind to the permanent residents of Madison Square and honestly warns them about his imminent arrival.
At the intersection of four streets, he hands his cards to the North Wind, the doorman of the Open Air hotel, so that its guests can get ready. "
Thank you - I grew up on this Writer.

what's really here he wrote with gusto.
I never doubted that he either testified to all these stories himself or heard at the bar from the second mouth at most

By the way, we all read many of O. Henry's stories in the translation by K. I. Chukovsky.
He also contributed to the preservation of the writer's style, which is often lost in translation.

"- No, I like the system of hints of the old man Ha Em better.
He seems to be some kind of wine sales agent.
His toast on duty: "All tryn grass".
Apparently, he suffers from an excess of bile, but in such doses he dilutes it with alcohol that his most shameless abuse sounds like an invitation to crush the bottle. "
- "Hymen's Handbook" is one of the most beloved writers.

I really like one of his short stories:

The deceased was twenty three years old." [^]

"Every self respecting thief will first get used to someone else's good, and then begin to appropriate it."

And our task is not to let them get used to it...
