Years of life: from 11.09.1862 to 05.06.1910
American writer, novelist.
He became famous as a master of the short story genre.
The stories of O. Henry are characterized by subtle humor and unexpected denouements.
Biography
O. Henry, real name William Sydney Porter, was born in the small town of Greensboro (North Carolina) in a respectable family of a doctor.
However, in 1865, the boy's mother died of tuberculosis, and his father began to drink heavily.
Little O. Henry was brought up by an aunt who was in charge of an elementary school, where the young writer received his primary education.
For some time, the writer worked in his uncle's pharmacy (1879-1881), lived for several months on a ranch in Texas in order to improve his health.
In 1882, O. Henry moved to Austin, where having tried several works, first settled by the cartographer to the Main land office of Texas (January 1887 — January 1891), and then the cashier bookkeeper in the First national Bank of Austin (1891 — 1894).
In 1885, the O. Henry met Athol Estes, and two years later they were married, in 1889, the couple had a girl.
While working at the bank, O. Henry began to write and in 1894-1895 published a weekly humorous newspaper "Rolling Stone", the main content of which was his own writings.
However, the newspaper was commercially unsuccessful, after its bankruptcy, O. Henry resigned from the bank and moved to the large Texas city of Houston, where he got a job as an editor of the humor department in a large newspaper, the Houston Post.
The writer did not have to work in this position for long, in 1896, an audit found a rather large shortage in the Austin bank, which O. Henry was accused of.
Fearing the bias of the court, O. Henry, released on bail, fled from the United States to Honduras, intending to wait there for the expiration of the statute of limitations on his case.
O. Henry was never able to fulfill this plan.
In 1897, he learned that his wife, who suffered from tuberculosis, was dying and decided to return to the United States despite the prosecution.
Six months after his return, Ethol died, and in 1898 the court found O. Henry guilty of embezzlement and sentenced the writer to five years in prison.
The writer was appointed to the post of a prison pharmacist, which entailed significant concessions in the conditions of serving his sentence.
O. Henry served his sentence in the Columbus prison in Ohio.
The writer was lucky, he was appointed to the post of a prison pharmacist, which entailed significant concessions in the conditions of serving his sentence.
In prison, O. Henry wrote stories that were published in New York newspapers.
Not wanting to be published under his own name, the writer goes through a number of pseudonyms, stopping at the option now known to everyone.
In 1901, O. Gurney was released early for good behavior.
While still in prison, he received an offer from one of the editors to become a permanent author and in 1902 the writer moved to New York where he began collaborating with several publications.
The stories written by O. Henry are quickly gaining popularity among readers, he is gaining fame and financial independence.
However, his well being was mainly due to hard work, for the period from 1902 to 1910, he wrote more than 300 stories, originally published in the periodical press.
In 1904, O. Henry's first book, "Cabbages and Kings" (Cabbages and Kings), was published, followed by a number of collections of short stories.
In 1905, the writer was found by his long time admirer Sally Coleman, and two years later they were married.
This marriage did not bring O. Henry happiness, his health was already not too strong, it was finally undermined by hard work.
There was a creative decline, in addition, the writer began to drink a lot and in the last months of his life suffered from deep depression.
O. Henry died in a New York hospital from acute pneumonia on the background of cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes.
Interesting facts from life
There are still disagreements about O. Henry's guilt in embezzlement, for which he was sentenced to five years in prison.
Most researchers still tend to believe that the writer was innocent and he was simply made a "scapegoat".
The origin of the pseudonym O. Henry remains unclear (the sometimes used spelling in the Irish manner " O 'Henry" is incorrect).
The most popular versions: 1. This is the name of the famous French pharmacist Etienne Ocean Henry, whose medical reference book was popular at that time.
2. This is an abbreviation of the name of the prison where the author was imprisoned Ohio Penitentiary.
The writer himself claimed in an interview that the name of Henry was taken from the secular news column in the newspaper, and the initial O. was chosen as the simplest letter.
He told one of the newspapers that O. stands for Olivier (French name Olivier), and indeed, he published several stories there under the name Olivier Henry.
