The first circumnavigation of the world by Captain James Cook has begun
James Cook
On July 30, 1768, an expedition of English scientists led by Joseph Banks left for the Pacific Ocean to observe the passage of the planet Venus through the Solar disk.
She went on the three masted ship "Endeavour" ("Daring"), with a displacement of 366 tons with a crew of 84 people.
The captain of the ship was James Cook – the first person to circumnavigate the Arctic Ocean and prove that the Southern continent (Australia) is not at all where its predecessors were looking for it.
After passing the Cape Verde Islands and the southern tip of America – Cape Horn, the Endeavour anchored off the island of Tahiti.
Here the expedition successfully observed the transit of Venus and continued its voyage.
For the first time in history, Cook mapped the Society Islands located to the northwest of Tahiti, as well as the Great Barrier Reef.
Heading to New Zealand, the captain found out that it is not part of some mythical Southern continent and consists of 2 islands.
Cook did not dare to go deep there, because he was afraid of clashes with the Maori cannibals.
Knowing about the existence of almost unexplored New Holland (present day Australia), the expedition headed west.
On April 19, 1770, the ship approached the mainland and began sailing along its eastern coast, which was then mapped for the first time.
On April 28, Cook's ships anchored in Botany Bay, so named for its rich vegetation.
Then the Endeavour safely reached the shores of New Guinea.
Everything was going well before coming to Batavia.
There, during the parking lot, 30 companions of the brave captain died of tropical fever.
From Batavia, the Endeavour headed for England, where it arrived in July 1771.
The British read the travel notes of James Cook published later, like a fascinating novel.
