Tashism (French Tachisme, from Tache spot) is a trend in Western European abstractionism of the 1950s and 60s, which was most widespread in the United States.
It is a painting with spots that do not recreate images of reality, but express the unconscious activity of the artist.
Strokes, lines and spots in tashism are applied to the canvas with quick movements of the hand without a premeditated plan.
The European group "COBRA" and the Japanese group "Gutai" (Gutai) are close to tashism.
Abstract expressionism is one of the complete synonyms of Tashism from the point of view of the creative method and ideology, but the time of appearance, the geography of distribution and the personal composition of these trends do not completely coincide.
