"Cobra", or " Cobra "(COBRA) is a European avant garde movement active in 1949-1952.
The name was coined in 1948 by Christian Dotremont after the first letters of the native cities of the participants of the movement: Copenhagen (Co Co), Brussels (Br — Br), Amsterdam (A — A).
"COBRA" was formed by the merger of the Dutch group "Reflex" (Reflex), the Danish group "Hest" (Høst) and the Belgian revolutionary surrealist group.
COBRA held two major exhibitions: at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1949) and at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Liege (1951).
Artists from the COBRA group are characterized by semi abstract canvases with bright colors, distorted human figures inspired by primitive and folk art.
The artists also took as a basis a children's drawing, Norse mythology.
They tried to develop an abstract language of forms that could express the unconscious to a greater extent than surrealism.
"COBRA" played a significant role in the development of Tashism and European abstract expressionism.
The group also influenced European social and political life, developing a critique of the modern Cold War society.
The international movement for the Imagist Bauhaus, which broke away from COBRa, became a step towards the development of the situationist movement.

Legacy[edit / edit wiki text]
The COBRa Museum is located in Amstelveen (the Netherlands), where the works of Karel Appel and other representatives of the avant garde are exhibited.
On April 3, 2006, an auction dedicated to the works of the COBRA movement was held in Copenhagen.
He collected 30 million crowns — the largest auction profit in Denmark.
The works of the group's artists are also represented in the collection of the "New National Gallery" in Berlin.
