Tashism /tachisme
from/fr. / from tache spot (1951-1960) the European equivalent of abstract expressionism.
The trend in abstract art formed in the 1950s and developed in parallel with abstract expressionism and informel, with which it is sometimes identified.
However, unlike abstract expressionism, which originated in the United States, tashism is European (first of all, the French version of non objective creativity).
His images (in the paintings of the French masters P. Soulage or H. Hartung) are based on the game of powerful, large strokes.
He rarely includes symbolically significant elements, proceeding (as in J. Mathieu) from the pure rhythm of an artistic gesture or (as in J. Bazin) from generalized landscape impressions.
For the first time, the works of the tashists were exhibited in Paris in 1947.
The method of their work was reduced to impulsive spontaneous application of paints on canvas and approached what was called action painting in the USA at the same time.
Artists: Georges Mathieu (Georges Mathieu), Pierre Soulages (Pierre Soulages), Hans Hartung (Hans Hartung), Michel Tapie (Michel Tapie de Celeyran), Antoni Tapies (Antoni Tapies), Pierre Alechinsky (Pierre Alechinsky), Camille Briand (Camille Bryen), Henri Michaux (Henri Michaux), Serge Poliakoff (Serge Poliakoff) and others.
Texts: Tapie M. Un art autre ou il s'agit de nouveaux devidages du reel.
