Colors and riddles of Centauri A
X ray (NASA/CXC/M. Karovska et al.); Radio 21 cm image (NRAO/VLA/Schiminovich, et al.),
Explanation: Why is there such a mess in the spiral galaxy Centauri A?
The composite image presented here shows how the unusual history of this galaxy can be learned from its radiation in various ranges.
In the low energy radio emission, which is shown in red, two areas intersected by a thick layer of dust glow brightly In the higher energy radio emission, depicted in green, a bright ejection is visible coming out of the center of the galaxy.
In the optical light shown in white, the stars that make up the bulk of the galaxy's mass are visible.
Recently, an X ray image of Centauri A was obtained by the Chandra X ray Observatory.
The X ray radiation, shown in blue, shows arcs of hot gas ejected from the center by an explosion that probably occurred about 10 million years ago.
In one of the hypotheses explaining the disorder observed in the galaxy, it is assumed that Centauri A swallowed up a smaller galaxy about 100 million years ago.
