Moscow Streets Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation.
Even historians do not know the exact age of the city.
Someone believes that Moscow originates from the XI century, and someone has an opinion that the capital is more than a thousand years old.
The question of age remains very controversial.
Due to the development of the city, the appearance of the streets has often changed, so the names of some streets are quite conventional.
For example, an alley could cease to be an alley, but the name remained the same.
To date, there are more than 3.5 thousand streets in Moscow.
Since the early Middle Ages, Moscow has grown in rings and radii in the direction from the center, so from a height the city resembles annual rings on the sawn trunk of a powerful tree.
The streets of Moscow stretch for many kilometers If all three thousand streets of Moscow are arranged in one line, then you will get a distance that exceeds the distance from Moscow to Berlin in length.
The most famous streets of Moscow: Arbat, Bolshaya Lubyanka, Tverskaya, Kuznetsky Most, Ostozhenka, Nikolskaya, Ilyinka and many others.
Each of them is remarkable in its own way.
Like many Slavic cities, the capital was built on the principle of settlements.
In this regard, the names of the streets of Moscow have also historically developed from ancient settlements.
For example, Mokhovaya used to be a place where the moss trade was conducted hence the name.
Carpenters and silversmiths lived in Plotnikov and Serebryany lanes.
The names of some streets in Moscow are derived from the names of temples and monasteries located on them.
So, on the site of the Holy Cross Monastery there was a street – Vozdvizhenka, and on Varvarka the church of St. Barbara.
Also, the streets of Moscow were named after important roads that ran along them: Bolshaya Ordynka, Tverskaya and others.
No matter how ancient the streets of Moscow are, they are subject to changes and reconstructions due to the influence of modernity and the needs of the metropolis.
Many streets, in addition to their great historical value, also carry a huge transport load.
The new streets of Moscow that are emerging in the capital today have a more modern and multifunctional appearance.
