Exactly 520 years ago, at about two o'clock in the morning, on Friday, October 12, 1492, the sailor of the Pinta caravel, Rodrigo de Triana, shouted: "Land!
Earth!"
The captain of the "Pinta" was the legendary navigator Christopher Columbus, and the land that de Triana saw was one of the Bahamas.
In this journey, a new continent was discovered – America, although Columbus did not know about it at the time.
On the one hand, the discovery of America is an amazing romantic story about brave travelers who rushed to meet adventures.
On the other hand (alas, closer to reality), the Columbus expedition had frankly greedy motives and bloody consequences for the indigenous population of the lands it discovered.
Three caravels under the command of Christopher Columbus left the port on August 3, 1492.
Columbus ' journey could not be called an easy walk.
The admiral was going to meet the unknown, and he had to fight not only and not so much with the harsh waves and winds, of which very few fell on this journey.
The most important problem was the morale of the crew: the sailors were very afraid of what they might meet along the way, and quietly hated the foreign admiral (Columbus is a Genoese by origin.
To tell the truth, few people then believed that someone would be able to return alive from this expedition.
Nevertheless, the ships continued to sail due west, and after two months of travel, they were lucky: On October 12, 1492, the expedition landed on the shore of one of the numerous Bahamian Islands.
Columbus was obsessed with finding gold and believed that he had come to India.
It is easy to imagine the admiral's disappointment when he was met on the island by poor naked natives who not only do not speak any of the languages known to him, but also have practically no gold.

In the hope of reaching the rich gold, spices and silk coasts of India, Columbus continued to sail further and further.
On October 28, 1492, the caravels reached Cuba, and on December 5 – the island named by Columbus Hispaniola, or "little Spain" (now – Haiti.
The Indians on all the islands welcomed the guests cordially, gladly exchanged goods, filling the holds of ships with gold and jewelry and receiving in return cloth, perfume, beads and various treats.

Visiting Haiti was the peak of Columbus ' first trip.
There he lost one of his ships, the Santa Maria, which ran aground due to the negligence of the crew, who celebrated Christmas too hard.
The first alien settlement was also founded there – Fort La Navidad, in which 39 sailors remained, whose tasks were to establish control over the island and search for gold.
Columbus planned to return to these places a year later, and therefore, on January 16, 1493, the two remaining ships, the Ninya and the Pinta, set off on their return journey.

After that, the romance ended completely.
In less than a year, a flotilla of 17 ships under the leadership of Columbus sails along the already known route to conquer, plunder and conquer.
Then there were the third (1498-1500) and the fourth (1502-1504) expeditions, but Christopher Columbus did not understand until the end of his days that it was he who discovered a new continent, called Amerigo Vespucci simply and beautifully – America.
Columbus died in 1506, in poverty and disgrace, being seriously ill.
Only years later, the significance of his discoveries was recognized by right, and October 12, the day when Rodrigo de Triana discovered a new land, became the day of the Spanish nation.

Interesting facts about Columbus and his travels:
1. Columbus called the population of the lands he discovered Indians, being sure that he sailed to the shores of India.
2. In the middle of the first trip, on September 13, 1492, Columbus noticed that the compass needle began to deviate to the north.
In order not to frighten the sailors, he did not want to admit it and later attributed it to the fact that the compass operates in a new space in a new way.
In fact, he discovered the dependence of the magnetic declination on geographical coordinates.
3. The capital of the island of Puerto Rico discovered by Columbus is now called San Juan.
In fact, initially everything was the opposite: the island was called San Juan, and its capital was Puerto Rico.
The cartographers got it wrong!
4. During the fourth expedition, the Spaniards landed on an island they called Costa Rica ("rich coast".
They believed that there were large deposits of gold on the island, but they were mistaken: Costa Rica is extremely scarce for anything of value.
5. The film company Columbia pictures is named after Columbus.

If the film Avtar was shot in Russia, it would have a completely different plot...
For example, how the Russians together with NAVI raise the Pandora Virgin Land...
Feel the difference..

By the way, it is on the example of the conquest of America that the coordinating and fundamental difference between the European and Russian civilizations is visible...
The Europeans almost completely destroyed the local population and settled their territories, driving the survivors into reservations.
The Russians, having landed in Alaska and the west coast of North America, existed with the local population in relative peace (to the extent that newcomers can be at peace with the natives)..
And from here it is clear that Russians will never become Europeans because of a fundamentally different worldview.
Therefore, Europe will never "love" Russia and it is senseless and suicidal to drag Russia by force to Europe...
