Stealing Cows
The return of cows stolen from the gods by the demon tribe Paniy was one of the greatest feats of the god Indra.
This tribe lived in unknown lands, beyond both the world of the gods and the world of the asuras.
The Pani stole the divine cows across the Rasa River, which flows at the end of the world, and buried them in a cave on a high mountain.
Then the heavens were darkened, because those cows were the rays of the morning dawn.
Brihaspasti, who had seen the paniyas, told the mighty Indra about this abduction.
Indra sent the divine dog Sarama to look for cows.
The dog tracked down the cows, ran to the river, on the opposite bank of which there was a demon impregnable fortress, jumped over it and heard the cows moo inside one of the rocks.
The Pani met a Dog.
"What is the purpose of your coming here, Sarama?
After all, the path to us is too far and difficult to come here aimlessly, what do you want?"
- "And I came here to return the great treasures that you stole from us, so that you return the cows, I am the messenger of Indra and I warn you" - " What does this Indra who sent you here look like, oSarama?
Let him come here himself, let him be our friend, let us be the shepherd of our flocks."
"He who sent me here from such distant lands is not stupid, he cannot be outwitted, O pani," SaramaOn answered them, " he is the one who deceives others himself.
You will be killed by Indra and you will lie here, O pani! "
And then the pani said: "These are the cows that you crave, O Sarama.
But no one will give them to you without a fight.
Our weapons are not blunted, the treasures are very well hidden in the mountains and the pani will be able to save them.
You shouldnot have come here."
- "Your words are not an army yet," Sarama said to them.
– And when the angry sages of Angirasa, led by Indra, come here, they will divide your flocks among themselves, and you will choke on your boastful speeches!"
Then the panias said to her, " Since you have come here, O Sarama, by the will of your gods, stay with us, become our sister. "
Do not go back to the gods, we will give you a decent share in our flocks and pastures, beautiful beauty!"
"I am not seeking kinship with you," Sarama replied to them."
I am the property of Indra and the powerful Angirasas.
Beware of them, O Pani!
And I donot need your flocks.
But I would try the milk of those cows that you would try to hide in those rocks over there."
And they brought her milk.
I couldnot resist the temptation of Saram and still drank the sweet moisture.
After that, she jumped over the wide river again and set off on her way back.
Returning to Indra, he asked Sarama, " Have you found, O great Sarama, the divine cows?"
And she, being under the intoxicating effect of the milk of demons, answered him "No".
Indra realized that she was lying and angrily kicked Sarama.
At that moment, the divine milk that she drank from the paniyas came out of the dog and, shuddering with fear, she wandered to the land of the paniyas, and the mighty Indra went after her in a golden chariot.
Along with Indra, the Angirasas, led by Brihaspati, the lord of prayers, also set out on their journey.
Having come to the land lying on the edge of the world, beyond the wide Rasa River, the wisest Angirasas destroyed the rock with magic spells and songs and pulled the cows out of captivity.
And as soon as they did this, the evil darkness disappeared, the sunlight of Ushas, the goddess of dawn, sowed in the sky, and the sun appeared in the eyes of all living things.
In sorrow for the loss of cows, Vala, a cave demon, howled frighteningly from the depths of the mountain, but was struck to death by the magnificent Indra.
