The Life and Death of Kurt Cobain
CHAPTER 1.
LIFE
For some, the word "NIRVANA" means an elated state akin to enlightenment, for others – a place of final calm, something like a sensitive Paradise.
But millions of rock fans understand only one thing by this - the name of the band that turned the idea of the status of rock stars in the 90s.
NIRVANA was one of the unique representatives of the underground scene, which found its fans both among fans of alternative rock music, thrashers, moshers, punkers and among adherents of the traditional rock mainstream.
Guitarist and vocalist of the future supergroup Kurt Donald Cobain (Kurt Donald Cobain) was born on February 20, 1967 in the small port town of Hokuayim, Washington, located in the neighborhood of Aberdeen, where the family moved when Kurt was only six months old.
This small backwater town is located about a hundred miles southwest of Seattle and is famous for its giant trailer park, as well as numerous brothels.
Aberdeen in the mid sixties is a city of rampant unemployment, a dreary rainy climate and suicides.
The woodworking factory was the only place where you could earn money, but it was not easy to get a job there.
Kurt grew up in a large family, being under the supervision of eight aunts and uncles who constantly spoiled him.
Kurt's father Donald Cobain, a German by birth, worked as an auto mechanic.
Mother Wendy O'Connor (Wendy O'Connor) of Irish blood, changed a lot of professions during her life, worked as a teacher, a secretary and a waiter in a bar.
The Cobain family with great difficulty acquired a typical middle class house in which Kurt spent his childhood.
He was the first child in the family.
Three years later, Kim's sister was born.
Kurt was a shy boy with artistic inclinations.
At school, he received several awards for his work in drawing and design.
But despite a cloudless childhood, he was waiting for the same bleak prospect as the rest of the teenagers of Aberdeen.
The only outlet for Kurt was music.
It all started like this: one day Chuck, the brother of Cobain's mother and the guitarist of a rock band, took his two year old nephew to a rehearsal.
His mother recalled: "Kurt started singing very early.
Even when I sent him to the store, he sang on the way
at the top of his voice.
The son was happy with each new day, he tried to avoid the company of other children and spent most of the time alone.
However, later, he became even too active.
"Chuck's sister Mary, a singer from the bar, also took part in the formation of the boy's musical taste.
She gave him records of THE BEATLES and THE MONKEES, and also gave him the first guitar lessons.
At the age of seven, Kurt could already sing his favorite song "Alice's Restaurant" from the repertoire of Arlo Guthrie (Arlo Guthrie) and beat the Beatles ' "Hey, Jude" and "Revolution"on the drum.
Moreover, he liked the drums more.
After school, he for a few hours peck on his little drum set "Mickey Mouse" until he struck the "barrel" and turned the dish into a piece of iron."
I beat a big drum, hanging on his chest ,and yelled "Hey Jude" – recalled Kurt, I really wanted to be Ringo Starr, while John Lennon, which I regret not played on the drum, I liked it a lot more."
In 1975, Kurt was already playing the guitar with might and main in the school ensemble.
Since he was left handed, the instrument had to be rebuilt on the left hand.
Cobain's hyperactivity also had negative sides – he was often ill and fell into a depressive state for no reason.
At the age of fourteen, Kurt was given an electric guitar and a twenty watt amplifier.
Now he spent all his free time in the company of Warren Mason (the musician of Uncle Chuck's band), who became his first teacher.
Cobain's father joined the philophonists ' club and began receiving albums by KISS, LED ZEPPELIN,BLACK SABBATH by mail.
Kurt became interested in heavy metal, preferring heavy riffs in the spirit of AC/DC, and then punk rock (SEX PISTOLS,THE CLASH), although there were no records of these groups in any of the stores, he perfectly understood the basic idea of punk, and this undisguised nihilism so pleased him that he decided to assemble his band with two school friends Scott and Andy.
This idea suffered a complete fiasco – after a week of rehearsals after the bruising, the would be musicians dispersed.
The idea of becoming a rock star had to be postponed for a while.
For lack of anything better, Kurt became a fan of the local punk band THE MELVINS, having attended about 200 concerts of this ensemble.
He helped carry equipment and set up instruments, did not miss more than one rehearsal and actively participated in drunken parties, which usually lasted until the morning.
So he became friends with bassist Matt Lukin (Matt Lukin) and team leader Buzz Ozborne (Buzz Ozborne), a big fan of the British team THE WHO.
It was Buzz who took the sixteen year old Kurt to the first rock show in his life.
By the way, in 1986 THE MELVINS released the album Gluey Porch Treatments, which went down in history as the first record in the style of "grunge" -a kind of mutant of punk rock and hard rock in the spirit of KISS and AEROSMITH.
Meanwhile, the well being of the Cobain family has come to an end.
The boy's parents divorced, and he withdrew into himself.
Kurt lived with his mother for a year, then spent two years with his father, hanging out with him in a trailer parked at a campsite near Monteseno.
My mother married again, this time to a longshoreman who drank black.
After one of the drinking parties, when the husband, who had pretty much got the whole family, was resting on the floor due to great fatigue, unable to move either hand or foot, the mother collected the entire collection of guns and pistols of her aggressive spouse and, together with Kurt's younger sister Kim, dragged the whole arsenal to the Uishka River, where she drowned it, out of harm's way.
The vigilant Kurt registered the process of "drowning "the weapon through the window and the next day went fishing with his friends ."
The deadly cargo was successfully brought to the surface, cleaned and sold.
With the proceeds, young entrepreneurs bought decent amplifiers and instruments.
now Kurt, who constantly felt that his guitar didnot sound loud enough, could "come off" in full.
Soon Cobain famously learned to touch the guitar strings and even copied the party Eddie van Helena (Eddie Van Halen).
"I really liked to play two songs "Communication Breakdown" by LED ZEPPELIN and "My Best Friend's Girl" - THE CARS – he recalled later, I had already felt that he is able to write a song as good.
When I watched the first concert of guitarist Sammy Hagar (Samy Hagar, who later became the vocalist of VAN HALEN), it became completely clear to me that I would connect my fate only with the stage."
In July 1979, his mother's brother, Burle Cobain, committed suicide by shooting himself in the stomach.
Kurt loved and respected his uncle very much, and his death in the full sense of the word knocked the teenager out of the rut.
He became depressed and minimized his relationships with his peers.
"I spent hours sitting in my bedroom and strumming the guitar," Kurt said, " I had no idea that because of my seclusion, the girls considered me a great original and constantly hit on me.
My few friends were simply surprised by this fact, because I was far from handsome.
However, none of the applicants managed to "promote" me, because at that time it seemed to me that I was a homosexual.
In fact, it was a real misanthropy."
Kurt became even more withdrawn, sometimes he was attacked by bouts of senseless vandalism.
They were expressed in the fact that he could break into someone's empty apartment without a twinge of conscience and turn everything upside down in it .
His punk habits showed up later, when he got a job as a lifeguard sailor or a cleaner in a dental clinic and in a hotel.
Instead of cleaning up, he would fall on the side or bring friends to the room with whom he arranged a drunken brawl.
It is clear that he did not stay in any place for a long time.
Kurt's first compositions were approved by his older comrades from THE MELVINS, but he never got into the band, although "he slept and saw himself as part of a real rock team".
Meanwhile, the MELVINS progressed: they performed in Seattle, and the song "Alchemy" became a real hit.
In August 1984, together with Lukin and Osborn, Kurt went to Seattle for a BLACK FLAG concert held at the Mountanier club as part of the "Slip It In"tour.
To get to the performance, Cobain had to sell the records of JOURNEY, FOREIGNER and singer Pat Benatar from his music library.
The trip to Seattle was of great importance to Cobain.
The leader of the" Black Banner " Henry Rollins made an indelible impression on Kurt, who decided to immediately create a group to play such music.
Now he listened exclusively to American hardcore, samples of FLIPPER, SCRATCH ACID and MCD.
I discovered the old THE STOOGES .
Then he became interested in the psychedelic BUTTHOLE SURFERS and MINOR THREAT, as well as THE RAINCOATS, YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS and JAR FAIR.
At the same time, he decided to move to Seattle, where it was much easier to implement the ideas of creating his own com the Andes.
However, these plans were not destined to be realized.
In 1984, he graduated from high school and decided not to study anymore.
The mother was not satisfied with this state of affairs and after several scandals, she kicked her son out of the house.
Kurt had to live with friends.
There was a difficult period in his life when there was nowhere to spend the night and he had to sleep either under the bridge over the Uishka River or in the cabs of trucks.
Kurt will later reflect the time of his vagrancy in the song "Something In The Way".
Unexpectedly, he became interested in reading.
He considered Leo Tolstoy, Laurie Wilder, Salinger and Laurence van der Post to be his favorite authors.
Thanks to the efforts of Matt Lukin, Kurt was finally assigned to work as a janitor in a dental clinic.
However, the chief dentist soon kicked out the grief of the employee, since he brought only one loss to the institution: he painted walls, broke chairs and legs at tables, but most importantly – stole medicines.
By this time, Cobain had given up drums and started playing guitar.
He couldnot find any guys who would work with him.
His significant meeting with bassist Chris Novoselich (full name Chris Anthony Novoselich was born on May 16, 1965 in Compton, California, in a family of immigrants from Yugoslavia) happened quite by accident.
Chris was a shy young man, about two meters tall.
He liked to drink beer and played the guitar decently, listened to the same music as Kurt, smoked dope, but most importantly "this guy was a prankster, with an innate sense of humor and it was always interesting to spend time with him."
Krist's parents emigrated from Croatia in search of illusory happiness to America.
My mother worked as a hairdresser, my father was engaged in the manufacture of furniture.
When Christ was fifteen years old, the family moved to Aberdeen.
The financial situation of the family improved, and the mother even managed to open her own salon "Maria's Hair Design".
"I got interested in music," says Novoselic, " listening to LED ZEPPELIN, KISS, DEVO, BLACK FLAG.
I still consider the "Zeppelin" double of Physical Graffiti to be the coolest album.
However, I did not have like minded people at school .
My friends were diligently " puffing weed and were not interested in music at all."
After graduating from high school, Chris got a job on a fishing boat.
In his spare time from fishing, he went to Seattle and Tacoma to see local punk bands.
After meeting the same Buzz Osborn, he started playing guitar, trying to "shoot" things by FLIPPER, MCD, BUTTHOLE SURFERS.
According to the legend, Chris was introduced to Kurt by Buzz.
In fact, everything was different – Chris heard music from one window.
Novoselic liked this song and the voice that performed it very much.
This musician was Kurt Cobain… sliced his Spank Thru.
Cobain actually left his parents ' house, and moved to Chris, with whom more than one case of beer was drunk at his leisure.
However, Chris (who liked the name Chris more than Krist) it was not destined to get into Cobain's first band, which he created with bassist Dale Crover (ex - drummer of THE MELVINS) and drummer Greg Hokanson (Greg Hokanson).
Soon Greg left the trio and the duo completed work on a demo recording of seven songs, which included such compositions as Sound Of Dentage, Bamby Slaughter, Laminated Effect, similar in sound to Stay Away from the album Nevermind.
The demo also included an instrumental version of Downer later included in Bleach.
Floyd The Baber and Negative Greep songs will soon be on the Whiplash bootleg.
Work on the demo was conducted on a four track tape recorder at Aunt Mary's house.
Cobain's activity attracted the attention of other "Melvinites" - Buzz Osborne and drummer Mike Dillard, who even rehearsed with Kurt for some time.
However, this union was short lived.
Soon Cobain found new partners brothers Steve and Eric Shillenger, with whom nothing happened either.
"Kurt was yelling into the microphone so much that I couldnot make out a single word, and he often fell out of the rhythm, not paying any attention to this fact.
I liked METAL CHURCH, they were also far from pompous, but what Kurt was doing went beyond all my ideas about making music, " Steve Schillinger later recalled.
The friendly relations did not end there, however, and turned into a somewhat incomprehensible occupation decorating the buildings of his native city (including the walls of the Aberdeen bank) with provocative and blasphemous inscriptions such as "Homosexual sex Rules" ("Homosexuality Rules"), "Abortion Christ" ("Make an abortion")," Queer "(one of the nicknames of homosexuals) or" God Is Gay "("God is a faggot").
Kurt went out for night fun with Chris Novoselic, Steve and Buzz Osborne.
The law enforcement officers were pretty fed up with these graffiti and during one of the raids, in the summer of 1985, the whole company was caught red handed.
Oddly enough, only one Cobain was put in jail for thirty days, collecting 180 bucks from him at the same time.
When the prisoner was released, the rehearsals resumed again.
Kurt formed the band BROWN TOWEL with the same Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover.
During this period, Cobain first tried heroin, which was pushed to him by a drug dealer named Grant (Grunt).
Kurt was so hooked on the needle that he couldnot control himself.
One day, in search of money for shirka, he came to his mother, and, failing to achieve what he wanted, he cut his hands with a knife right in front of her.
With great difficulty, the doctors managed to return the limbs of a potential drug addict to working capacity.
An unpleasant fact in the biography somewhat brought Kurt to reason, who again contacted Chris Novoselic and even persuaded him to help record several songs.
Together with a guy named Bob McFadden (Bob McFadden), the owner of his own drum kit, a decent quality tape was prepared, which quickly spread around Aberdeen.
Even numerous fans of THE CURE have re recorded the tape for their collections.
Later, Steve, Kurt and bassist Steve Newman formed the trio SELLOUTS (renamed ED TED & FRED, and then FECAL MATTER), in which Chris played guitar and Kurt played drums.
They played just for their own pleasure, and mostly cover versions...
CREEDANCE CLEARWATTER REVIVAL.
After five rehearsals, this trio recorded a demo with three songs, including the eponymous Fecal matter, after which they fell apart.
The reason for the collapse was another drunkenness, during which Newman almost killed Cobain with a vacuum cleaner.
Later, Steve Newman himself will have an accident – he will lose his fingers after careless handling of a circular saw.
Unfortunately, Novoselic was not attracted to the activities of a rock musician and in March 1986 he left with his girlfriend Shelly for Arizona in search of a more reliable job.
Then he enlisted in Tacoma on a ship.
Kurt did not get involved in such adventures.
Physical work didnot bother him.
Much more pleasure was given to him by "sawing" on the guitar, and partying with his girlfriend Tracy Marander (Tracy Marander).
In the winter of 1987, Chris returned to Aberdeen with nothing and this time he himself proposed to Kurt to create a band, but with one condition that it was psychedelic punk rock.
The new partner of the duo was drummer Aaron Burckhard (Aaron Burckhard).
The first real performance of the newly formed trio, called Skid Row, was a concert in the small town of Raymond, where the musicians played a dozen of their things, among which were: Hairspray Queen, Aero Zeppelin, Spank Thru, Anorehorcist.
The official debut took place at the GESCCO Hall of the Olympia campus, located 80 miles from Aberdeen.
"Our first concert was not a success," Kurt later recalled, "the audience received us without enthusiasm, the people were either drunk or "stoned", and once in Aberdeen no one came to our concert at all."
In March, Skid Row threw an amazing show at the Tacoma Community World Theatre, turned into a strip theater.
Kurt started the audience with half a turn, managing to perform dizzying acrobatic steps in the spirit of David Lee Roth (David Lee Roth, now ex - vocalist of VAN HALEN) in losses.
A month later, the band signed up for Radio KAOS,and implemented a live demo of nine things.
Even Cobain himself did not remember the names of three of them.
The music of this unique demo tape still defies any classification.
Throughout the summer, the trio toured, and then, without getting out of the clubs The Vogue and The Central in Seattle, played several sets with MUDHONEY and BEAT HAPPENING (the leader of the latter is Calvin Johnson, he is also the boss of the local firm "K RECORDS" will later bring Cobain together with an ardent rock music enthusiast J. JACK ENDINO, "the midwife of the Seattle rock scene").
And literally every third performance the group opened under a new name.
From SKID ROW, the musicians renamed themselves ED TED & FRED again, then changed the sign to BLISS THROUGH OYSTER, PEN CAP CHEW and WINDOWPANE.
Eventually, Kurt dubbed the band NIRVANA.
With this name, they were destined to go down in history.
The idea to call the team this way came to him during the period of his passion for heroin, when he was undergoing rehabilitation in the hospital.
"I wanted the name to be sonorous, beautiful, but controversial in terms of its interpretation," Cobain said, " the ANGRY SAMOANS logo is very successful in this regard, but NIRVANA is more exotic."
Kurt continued to write songs, of which there were already a dozen.
He adopted the style of singing "with a tear" from David Yow – the vocalist of the band SCRACH ACID.
At the end of the year, Burkhard left the band.
"I canot imagine myself without drums –" he complained, " but playing every night for two months, it was already too much.
It got to the point that we were stuck on stage for four or five hours, there was no time to even take a piss."
We didnot have to look for a new drummer for a long time, just one call to Dale Crover was enough.
Three weeks later, NIRVANA was already recording her demo at the Seattle studio Reciprocal Recording, which was released on January 23, 1988.
The recording was directed by Jack Endino, a former US Navy engineer and musician of the band SKIN YARD.
Jack produced THC MELVINS and was looking for new interesting teams, such as this naughty project under the management of Kurt Cobain.
He took a purely symbolic fee for studio time and depreciation of the device, which earned him honor and respect in the crowd.
He didnot take a dollar from NIRVANA at all, especially since those with money were completely naked.
Endino knew Crover very well and worked with the band purely on a friendly basis.
In total, ten songs were "rolled up", among which were:" Aero Zeppelin"," Paper Cuts"," Floyd The Barber "and"Beeswax".
He handed the finished tape to Jonathan Poneman, who had just finished recording the SOUNDGARDEN EP.
The boss of the Sub Pop company liked the guys from Aberdeen and especially the "crazy vocalist" and he suggested that Cobain and his team wandering through small clubs release a single.
Oddly enough, but Novoselic at first was an ardent opponent of signing a contract with Pounman.
Maybe he didnot like the boss's face or something, but the fact remains.
By the beginning of 1988, the Seattle rock scene was going through a formative period: key groups TCH, MELVINS, GREEN RIVER and FEASTMOTHER LOVE BONE were just " getting back on their feet" The entire rock movement was closed at the Sub Pop company, which began its activity as a fanzine at the company of Bruce Pevitt, who has been promoting the local scene for seven years.
Then Bruce, having collected demo tapes, began to produce self made compilations and subsidize the recording of novice teams.
The next stage was the birth of a record company.
The first step of the new label was the release of the compilation Sub Pop 100 (July 1986), with the music of the bands MOTHER LOVE BONE (later some of these air shakers moved to PEARL JAM), MALFUNKSHEN and GREEN RIVER presented on it.
Continuing the business started, the entrepreneurial blow "promoted" SOUNDGARDEN, MUNHONEY and TAD.
In addition, the worldwide success of the QUEENSPYCHE group provided excellent advertising to Seattle.
While at the hot anvil, Pounmain and Pavitt took custody of Cobain and Co and put NIRVANA on the studio schedule.
It was not possible to start recording in time, as the trio left Crover, who was recalled to San Francisco by Buzz Osborne.
Before leaving, Dale brought his replacement Dave Foster (Dave Foster), who coped with both bass guitar and drums with equal success.
The rehearsal base was once again moved, this time to Tacoma on Pearl Avenue, to the new home of Chris and his girlfriend Shelly.
"I felt that I was not suitable for them," Foster later recalled – " I dressed in leather, and they went in some colored rags and robes.
Kurt did not adhere to any image at all – half punk, half hippan, half idiot, in short.
He had a clearly inadequate attitude to rock and roll.
However, I liked Cobain's music and I stayed in the band for almost four months, until Kurt openly threw me, for which I almost punched him in the face."
With Foster, the band gave successful concerts in Seattle, until Kurt again fell into a steep depression.
Foster soon departed and was briefly replaced by Donald Joseph Mascis from DINOSAUR Jr.
In May, Chris and Kurt met with drummer Chad Channingham (born 31.01.67 in Santa Rosa, California) from the band TICK DOLLY ROW, which they were completely satisfied with.
Without warning Foster, Kurt enlisted Chad (who shortened his last name to Channing) as part of NIRVANA,and a week later the trio worked together on a night gig in Seattle.
Chad first met Cobain when his band TICK DOLLY ROW (whose lead vocalist Ben Shepherd later moved to SOUNDGARDEN) performed with BLISS.
"After that, they say, they should try to play jam with me," Chet recalls– " but after half an hour he got stoned to death and forgot not only about me, but probably about himself."
Kurt Cobain shocked us all."
An unnamed American fan of Nirvana
On Friday, April 8, 1994, at 8: 45 a.m. local time, a phone call was registered at the Seattle Police Department.
The caller identified himself as Harry Smith (Gary Smith) and said that in the house No. 171 belonging to a couple of musicians Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, he found the bloody corpse of a man.
The squad of law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene 11 minutes later actually found the applicant's subject and the body of the deceased, dressed in jeans, a hoodie and sneakers.
You donot need to be a forensic expert to imagine the picture that opened up to the eyes of the police: a man shot himself in the mouth with a large - caliber Remington rifle of the 11th model...
After an initial inspection of the scene, the death of the victim as a result of suicide was registered no traces of violent actions were found.
From the protocol of the interrogation of Gary Smith, the following turned out.
Smith is a full time electrician who maintains security alarms for houses located on Rake Washington Boulevard, including the Cobain couple's mansion.
The electrician's duties included a daily inspection of the alarm system.
At 8: 30 a.m., Gary Smith, checking the alarm sensors, went up the stairs to the second floor and saw a dead man through the window in the room above the garage.
After 15 minutes, Mr. Smith called the police, the nearest hospital and the local radio station.
At 11 o'clock, the KISW radio station broadcast a message that the body of a man who committed suicide by shooting himself in the head was found in Cobain's house.
However, it is not yet known that the suicide is Kurt Cobain.
The MTV report clarified that the last person to see the musician was John Silva, NIRVANA's manager.
At 12 o'clock, the Seattle TV channel Channel 9 informed viewers that the planned NIRVANA tour as part of the Lollapallooza festival is in question.
After 45 minutes, the body was identified by fingerprints.
To the horror of millions of fans, experts stated that it was the leader of NIRVANA who was killed.
The suicide occurred long before the discovery of the corpse.
To end his life, Kurt put a rifle between his legs and shot himself in the mouth.
At one o'clock in the afternoon, radio stations in the northwestern United States filled the air with NIRVANA songs.
Fans began to flock to Cobain's house.
A couple of hours later, car traffic on Lake Washington Boulevard was paralyzed by at least five thousand fans who came to say goodbye to their idol.
By nightfall, the crowd had not dispersed, and thousands of candles were lit in the dark.
The vigil to the soundtrack of NIRVANA songs lasted until the morning.
At 14.00, American news agencies transmitted the details of the event throughout the country and to Europe.
The first interview was given by Chris Novoselic.
He ended this interview with the words: "At this time, you can not think badly about Kurt.
Let his soul be free.
The claim that drugs were the cause of Cobain's death is incorrect.
Heroin was only a small part of his life.
Kurt was eliminated by the "mystical forces of rock".
Rock stars of this order are doomed.
Their fatal outcome is predetermined by fate."
MTV news also noted that Cobain's death automatically puts an end to the band's career.
"I was amazed when the suicide occurred," producer Steve Albini said in an interview, " but it didnot surprise me that Kurt was capable of such a thing.
I think everyone who thinks about his existence thinks about suicide.
They say that this is a way out for the faint hearted, since you must deal with your problems strictly and in a disciplined manner.
But some people decide to change the situation, and one of the ways to change it is to leave.
Maybe many people whose life would have been as difficult as Kurt's would not have ended it like this.
Well, I think that this is a manifestation of perseverance, but this does not mean that Kurt's act was unjustified."
What events preceded the tragic denouement?
During a tour of Europe, in Rome, Kurt Cobain was taken to a clinic, where he was brought out of a drug alcohol coma for 36 hours.
This time he was saved by doctors who restored the vital functions of the body, but were unable to restore his mental balance.
The conclusion was unequivocal - an attempt to commit suicide with the help of the painkiller Roinpol, which Kurt washed down with a certain amount of champagne.
In the room where the musician tried to solve all the problems in one fell swoop, a suicide note was even found, which was not advertised in the interests of the case.
The last two concerts of NIRVANA, of course, were canceled, and the band returned to their homeland.
For two weeks after his return, Kurt kept himself in control.
However, he told Love that he no longer wanted to work with NIRVANA and it would be much more interesting for him to perform with Michael Stipe (vocalist R. E. M.).
Then he began to "arm himself", although there was already a revolver "Tauras" and a Beretta machine gun in the house.
He" snapped " abruptly.
NIRVANA no longer actually existed.
Kurt was not physically able to rehearse, much less perform on stage.
In the end, he sent Novoselic away, which immediately became known to the cunning journalists of the Los Angeles Times.
The organizer of the US tour "Lollapallooza" (summer 1994), Perry Farrell, made a statement that the famous trio, announced together with the SMASHING PUMPKINS as headliners, "apparently will not be ready to work out their account."
Kurt's mother Wendy Oconnor, who saw her son six days before the tragedy, tried to reason with her child, instilling that further music lessons "will not lead to good".
"I was sure that everything would turn out this way," she told reporters, " but I was not able to fix something.
He told me that people want him dead, that such an outcome is quite logical.
Just fate, nothing more than "the continuation of the history of rock and roll".
Courtney Love during this troubled period repeatedly saw her husband with a rifle in his hands.
"He once told me that he would shoot himself if they didnot leave him alone.
When I tried to persuade him to quit heroin, he told me that he could not fight pain without drugs.
I understood that this was "withdrawal" and the only thing I could do was send Kurt to a rehabilitation clinic in Los Angeles."
On March 18, 1994, Courtney and Novoselic gathered Cobain's closest relatives and friends in the person of Pat Smear and Dylan Carlson, also inviting Danny Goldberg, now the head of Atlantik Records.
Ten people came in total.
Almost every one of them tried to reason with Kurt, to guide him on the "right path", that is, to take care of himself and quit drugs.
But Cobain sat with an absent expression on his face, silent and thoughtful.
Now he looked at the faces of those present with a feeling of deep indifference, then he contemplated his own feet.
Soon he got up and, telling Smyr that they needed to work in the studio, left the room.
Courtney left Seattle on March 25 and moved to Los Angeles, settling in the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills and leaving her two year old daughter Frances Bean in the care of nanny Jackie Franny.
The reason for the departure was not the disagreements that arose with her husband.
It's just that Courtney's band was going to release their album at a Los Angeles company.
Periodically, she called Kurt and persuaded him to go to the Exodus Recovery Center hospital in the city of Merino Del to undergo a rehabilitation course.
On March 28, Cobain finally succumbed to persuasion and promised to go and see what this hospital is like.
Kurt stayed in the hospital for only two days, constantly keeping in touch with his wife.
His last call was the strangest.
"Whatever happens, I want you to know that you made a great album," he said.
Courtney asked what he meant, what happened?
But Kurt only answered: "Just remember, no matter what happens, I love you."
This was their last conversation.
Alarmed, Love called all her friends, but no one knew where her husband was.
On the third of April, she, with the knowledge of the Geffen company, hired private detectives to search for Cobain.
Everyone assumed that Kurt had returned to Seattle.
In fact, he was there on March 30 and, having met with Dylan Carlson, asked him to buy a gun for him, ostensibly for self defense.
Cobain asked Dylan to register the weapon in his name, as he was afraid that he would get into trouble with the police, who had previously confiscated his arsenal.
This raises another question - why should Kurt worry about the police if he decided to commit suicide?
It turns out that either someone really threatened his life, or he had another psychosis.
"Of course, if I had known or even guessed what Kurt was up to," Carlson said later in an interview, " I would never have bought him a rifle.
But then he was in an optimistic mood, he was determined to overcome all his problems."
After buying a 20 caliber rifle of the brand "61b Remington Model 11", the friends dispersed.
They were not destined to meet again.
On the same day, Kurt bought another package of cartridges at another gun store.
What for?
Cobain spent the night at his country house in Karsten, 40 miles from Seattle.
Later, Courtney claimed that, judging by someone else's sleeping bag and cigarettes in the ashtray, someone else was with him.
From the first to the eighth of April, none of his relatives and close friends, according to them, knew anything about the whereabouts of the leader of NIRVANA.
According to the official version, which was based on the data of the forensic medical examination, Kurt Cobain appeared at his home on Lake Washington on April 5, pumped up with heroin and sleeping pills.
Only a third of the dose of e the amount of drugs contained in his blood could lead an ordinary person to a fatal outcome.
There was a deathly silence in the huge empty house.
The house had never looked so ominous.
So Kurt turned on the TV, then headed to the second floor of the garage extension, next to the house where his daughter's nanny usually lived.
Choosing a pen with red ink, he wrote his last message to his wife, daughter, colleagues and fans, sealed the letter in an envelope, then took a gun and shot himself in the head.
Thus, his corpse lay for almost three days, until on April 8, electrician Gary Smith raised the alarm.
During these three days, many people were looking for Cobain.
Private detectives, friends who were involved in Courtney Love, and police officers who were contacted by Kurt's mother Wendy OConnor, who learned that her son had purchased a gun.
The police visited the house on Lake Washington several times, searched for Cobain in the hot spots, but to no avail.
He just disappeared into the water.
There were rumors that on April 5, a representative of the company, who did not identify himself, contacted Kurt, who urged him to go to a local rehabilitation center.
But allegedly the musician refused to do it.
According to other sources, Cobain was seen in the company of drug dealers.
However, these rumors were not confirmed.
The facts are as follows.
On the evening of April 7, Courtney Love called the hotel administrator and asked for medical help because of a severe allergic reaction to a seemingly ordinary medicine.
An ambulance took her to the clinic, but as a result, the police became interested in the patient.
After the discovery of a narcotic drug, a syringe and a prescription book, which was recognized as someone else's property, Courtney was arrested by the Beverly Hills police, but released on bail of $ 10,000.
Later, Love said that this drug was prescribed to her by her doctor, who forgot his book in her hotel room.
It is possible that Courtney did not have a simple nervous breakdown, but she found out somehow (at least telepathically) about the death of her husband.
Back in Seattle, Love made a statement to MTV reporters: "Two weeks before his suicide, Kurt was firmly "hooked" on drugs.
It was impossible to communicate with him.
He didnot want to see anyone and was in a state of deep depression.
I suspected that Kurt would do THIS to himself, but it seemed to me that his life would be interrupted when he turned at least forty years old."
During the interview, Courtney was dressed in jeans and socks of her late husband, and as a mascot she carried in her pocket a piece of unwashed hair cut from Cobain's head.
Later, during the vigil, reading out fragments from Cobain's deathbed message in a sinking voice, she gave free rein to her feelings and screamed: "You bastard, you bastard!".
While fans were grieving over the death of the "star", consoling themselves by listening to the album MTV Unplugged In New York, Cobain's" case " took a completely unexpected turn in Seattle.
The preliminary stage of the investigation into the circumstances of the death of the singer and composer has been completed and published in the music press.
These results were shocking: it is quite possible that Kurt Cobain did not shoot himself, but was shot.
This conclusion was reached by a private detective Tom Grant, who was hired by Courtney Love on April 3, that is, five days before Cobain's death.
What prompted Love to take such a step?
Fear for your life?
But in an interview, Courtney repeatedly stressed that Kurt "had a kind heart and he was so able to love."
Fear for your daughter's life?
It is excluded.
The same Courtney said that according to her husband, he is going to live up to 120 years, and that the only force holding him in this world is his child.
Fear for Kurt's own life?
Most likely.
But what does private investigation have to do with it?
It is not "outside" people who should watch the fading person, but at least doctors, but better relatives.
And one more thing.
If Tom Grant has been following Kurt relentlessly since his discharge from the Los Angeles rehabilitation center, then why did he allow the tragedy?
Grant dealt with the circumstances of the death of a celebrity for a total of eight months.
"I immediately realized that this was a murder," the detective said in an interview with the Star newspaper, " Kurt was in a drug trance.
In this state, a person is not aware of his actions and does not understand what is happening.
I'm sure that someone staged a suicide and pressed Kurt's finger on the trigger of the rifle.
The post mortem note found at the scene was half fake.
I spent a long time studying this piece of paper, written by Kurt with a pen with red paste, and found that the last two lines, in which he actually said goodbye to life, were written by another person.
This was confirmed by the examination.
Kurt valued death more than life.
It wasnot a secret.
And someone skillfully used the knowledge of this secret."
To complete the picture, it is necessary to cite in full the last message of Cobain addressed to Bodde - the" alter ego " of the musician:
BODDE
I speak the language of an experienced ordinary person who would clearly prefer to be a sluggish, infantile complainer.
This note will be quite easy to understand.
All the warnings of the short course of punk rock over all these years, since I got acquainted, so to speak, with the ethics that presuppose independence and acceptance of your community, have turned out to be really fair.
For many years now, I have not experienced excitement when listening, as well as when creating music, and at concerts and in the process of composing.
I canot tell you how ashamed I am for all this.
For example, when we are behind the stage, and the lights come on, and this crazy roar of the crowd begins, it does not touch me as it was with Freddie Mercury, who, it seems, liked to enjoy the love and adoration of the crowd, which I am very surprised and envious of.
The fact is that I canot deceive all of you, none of you.
It just wouldnot be fair to you or to me.
The worst crime I can imagine is to deceive people with such pretense and pretend that I feel 100% joy.
Sometimes it seems to me that I would like to stop the clock when I go on stage.
I tried to do everything in my power to understand the meaning of this.
And I understand God, believe me, I understand, but it's not enough.
I understand that we touched someone's feelings, entertained someone, not even someone, but very many.
I must be one of those narcissistic patients who begin to appreciate something only when it is no longer there.
I'm too sensitive.
I need to drown out my feelings a little to regain the enthusiasm that I had as a child.
During our last three tours, I understood all the people I knew personally and the fans of our music much better, but I still canot get over the frustration, guilt and pity that I feel for everyone.
There is something good in all of us, and I think I just love people too much.
So much so that it is because of this that I am overcome with this damn sadness.
Sad, small, sensitive, ungrateful, Pisces (Kurt's zodiac sign ed.).
My God!
Why doesnot that suit you?
I donot know!
I have a goddess wife who is full of ambition and compassion, and I have a daughter who is so similar to me as I was.
Loving and cheerful, welcoming every person she sees, because everything is good and does not cause her harm.
And it terrifies me so much that I can practically do nothing.
I canot bear the thought that Francis could become the same unhappy self destructive rocker that I have become.
I'm doing well, very well, and I'm grateful, but from the age of seven I began to hate all people.
Only because it seems so easy for them to live and feel compassion.
Compassion!
Just because I love and pity people too much, I get something in return.
I thank you all from the depths of my burning, writhing stomach, for your letters and support in recent years.
I'm too strange, sullen baby!
There is no passion in me anymore, and therefore, remember it is better to burn out instantly than to fade away slowly.
Peace, Love, Compassion.
Kurt Cobain.
Frances and Courtney, I'll be at your altar.
Please move on, Courtney, in the name of Frances, in the name of her life, which will be much happier without me.
I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU!
Apart from the last lines, everything else was actually written by Kurt.
But it was a LETTER in which he said that he was leaving show business, and not from life.
He wrote a similar letter back in Rome and, of course, those who needed the singer's death already knew about it.
Tom Grand also questioned all the conclusions of the police and the expert group.
In his opinion, the investigation of the circumstances of the case was not conducted professionally.
Even potential witnesses were not interviewed.
But the most amazing fact is that two days before the tragedy, at least two people already knew that Kurt Cobain WOULD BE killed.
They knew, but they were silent.
Tom Grant has met with them, but he still keeps the names of these people a secret.
Again, they committed a crime without preventing the murder, but no one is going to bring them to justice under the law.
There is one more detail.
The body was found in a room, the door to which was propped up by a stool from the inside.
In the other two rooms, which opened onto the balcony, chairs were placed in the middle, and the rooms were not locked.
Therefore, someone was clearly in the company of Cobain, coolly preparing the murder scene.
It is unlikely that Kurt, who was in a semi conscious state, was engaged in arranging chairs and looking for a room where it would be more convenient to "bring put the sentence into execution."
It is also alarming that an unknown person tried several times to use Cobain's credit card, which Courtney Love canceled as soon as she learned that her husband had run away from the clinic.
According to Courtney, she did this in order to determine where to look for Kurt.
They tried to use the credit card on the days when, according to the medical examiner's report, Cobain was already dead.
And in general, what could be more surprising than the fact that no one knew about the whereabouts of one of the most famous rock musicians in America for almost a week?
Or rather, someone knew for sure, but even to this day prefers to keep quiet.
The whole story is not inferior in its mysticism to the twisted plot of the TV series "Twin Peaks", which, by the way, was filmed in these places.
It is interesting that a private detective does not speculate on the word "murderers", emphasizing that this is the work of one person, or a whole group of people.
The Police Department responds to Grant's repeated demands to open a criminal case with a refusal "due to insufficient evidence."
Thus, the perpetrators of the crime have not yet been identified.
"I am sure that the traces of the murder should be looked for only in Seattle.
In his criminal circles associated with the drug business, " Tom Grant summed up his work.
Well, it's quite possible.
Seattle is gradually becoming the largest transshipment point for drugs in America.
Compared to 1993, the level of heroin use among young people in this city has increased by 60% .
However, there is not even indirect evidence of Kurt's involvement in the drug mafia cases.
Gold Mountain Entertainment management is more likely to be interested in eliminating Cobain.
It was no longer a secret to anyone that Kurt wanted to "get out of the game".
So finally, it was decided to make a lot of money on his death.
Indeed, in England alone, the last two records of NIRVANA were bought up on the vine and got into the Top 30.
But Kurt Cobain's albums sold huge copies without such a "precedent".
In total, 15 million copies of disks were sold worldwide.
Maybe Kurt, as the leader of American youth, was a danger to the secret services?
Unlikely.
Cobain's lyrics did not pose a social threat.
So who needs the death of Kurt, who would have taken his own life anyway?
The answer is probably simple.
He was killed by those who gave birth to him.
Seattle is now the center of the US music industry, no less than Los Angeles, New York or Cleveland.
The city needed a new Idol and God, because for the new generation, Jimi Hendrix (who is buried in Seattle's Greenwood Memorial Park) means little.
Kurt was the only candidate for the role of a Martyr, which they hurried to MAKE him.
Shortly before his death, Cobain stated: "I feel that people want me to die, because it will be a classic rock and roll story.
The same thing has already happened with Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison, and Ian Curtis.
Looks like I'm next."
There is no point in commenting on these words.
Everyone chooses their own path by themselves.
Kurt felt that everyone would benefit from such a final, and, first of all, himself.
The premature departure from the life of a rock star is certainly accompanied by all sorts of rumors and speculation.
For example, there are still eyewitnesses who periodically "meet" the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, in Argentina, in Spain and even in Madagascar.
It also turns out that it was not Jim Morrison who died in Paris, but ... his double.
Fans would really like to" prolong the life " of Jimi Hendrix, Ian Curtis, and Freddie Mercury, but their death was so obvious that it would be simply not serious to question such a sad fact.
The last significant rock hero to leave this mortal world was destined to be Kurt Donald Cobain, who was buried on April 10, 1994 in Seattle.
He was buried with all the honors he deserved in the presence of a huge number of grieving fans who came from all over America.
Today, the burial place of Cobain has been turned into an improvised memorial complex, surrounded by fresh flowers.
Five years have passed since the ill fated shot that ended the agony of the existence of the NIRVANA frontman, and the sensational message that Kurt Cobain did not commit suicide at all, but was killed, in fact, did not change anything - the man who charged an entire generation with his energy (albeit negative) did not resurrect from this.
However, there are still his songs in which he generously shares his thoughts with us.
I was shocked, first of all, by the very fact of the murder.
After John Lennon, Cobain became the second victim of a violent death.
But if John was killed by a maniac who was "taken" at the scene of the crime, then there are still a lot of "white spots" in the Kurt Cobain case: the killers have not been found, the customers have not been identified, the motives of the crime are unclear.
Who would want to send Kurt to his forefathers, and did Cobain have at least one chance to stay alive?
There are no answers to these questions yet.
The myth of the leader of NIRVANA has long outgrown him and will live for a long time.
Magazines, patches and T - shirts with his image and even the text of the last message are also being sold out" with a bang", CDs are being reissued, new collections, books and videos are being released.
Now Kurt Cobain has become a profitable product of the entertainment industry.
Too much had fallen to his lot, in too short a period of time, both glory and misfortune.
He was always a nervous bundle of emotional tension.
He could not cope with everyday reality, periodically falling into a narcotic trance.
"Live fast, die young" - this old slogan of the "sixties" is also relevant for current rockers.
No matter what people said about him, Kurt had one very valuable quality - he was extremely sincere both to himself and to his listeners, not going on about anyone.
Who was he really, this blond cute guy (comparable in charm only to Robert Redford or Andy Warhol (Andy Warhol, artist and manager of THE VELVET UNDERGROUND)), with an inexplicable longing in his crazy eyes?
Cobain, a marginal since childhood, always balanced on the razor's edge.
Probably, there is no such artist whose songs would sound so much rage and frustration, as well as boredom and despair.
In the 90s, NIRVANA was able to do what the SEX PISTOLS failed in the 70s.
Punk rock, in all its unsightly and unbridled beauty, has finally reached a multi million audience.
Cobain's songs clearly and easily contain anarchic ideas of the destruction of social foundations, which are introspectively expressed through visions of his inner world.
Just think, the idol of teenagers has become a clear outsider/nihilist, possessing all possible vices - a drug addict, an antisocial personality, a "gay", a psychopath ...
Even Freddie Mercury looks like a lamb of God in front of him.
The syndrome of the stunning popularity of NIRVANA is another symptom of another spiritual crisis, including in rock music.
Well, the end of the century (three years before 2000) has always been a troubled time for humanity,
And what happened to Cobain's inner circle after his death?
Courtney continues to play with her HOLE team and is raising a daughter.
Grohl formed his band FOO FIGHTERS with Pat Smear.
Novoselic retired from the music scene and settled with his new girlfriend in a house he bought near Portland.
Well, and the fans of NIRVANA?
They still persistently collect all the pieces that have at least some relation to their idol, trying to figure out how they can live on, who to focus on in this unstable world.
Cobain was not the only musician of the modern rock scene who passed away too early, but perhaps one of the most significant.
And rock music continues to exist... at the expense of sacrifices.
Rest in peace.
Kurt Cobain...
