Home "2007" September " 11 " The first article about esports in a big magazine!
The first article about esports in a big magazine!
15:00
This article was written by me for the magazine Digital Kazakhstan August.
Esports is a sport!
We all play some games that have become an integral part of our lives.
There are games for the soul, and there are professional ones, which will be discussed in this article.
What are games: entertainment or professional industry?
Entertainment is directly related to games, but games at a professional level are a slightly different concept.
Esports is a computer game at a professional level, and with prize funds and world competitions.
In many countries of the world and almost all European countries, this sport is so developed that big money is spinning in it and esports competes with physical sports without any obstacles.
There are many esports tournaments in the world with prize funds of $ 50,000 for the first place, and this is only in one game discipline!
List of leagues and tournaments held worldwide:
WCG (World Cyber Games), has been held since 2001 with qualifying rounds in different countries of the world.
Sponsored by Samsung Corporation.
The total prize fund of the tournament, including the qualifying rounds in each of the participating countries in 2001 amounted to $ 1,200,000 dollars, constantly gaining momentum now is $ 2,500,000.
The number of participating countries has exceeded 70!
ESWC (Electronic Sports World Cup), sponsored by various companies and held in Paris.
The total prize fund of the tournament is $ 500,000.
ESWC also includes game disciplines, where only representatives of the fair sex participate.
ESWC also cooperates with MTV and Canal+TV channels.
About 40 participating countries.
CPL (Cyberathlete Professional League), regularly held in the United States since 2000.
Over the 7 years of its existence, 300,000 players have played at the tournament, and the total prize fund amounted to more than 3 million dollars.
CPL cooperates with national TV channels.
CAL (Cyberathlete Amateur League), a league held in the United States for amateurs, in which more than 600,000 players participate.
CAL has 60 game disciplines.
ESL (Electronic Sports League), held in Germany, includes 113 game disciplines and more than 700,000 participants!
WSVG (World Series of Video Games) - held in the United States, has more than 100,000 participants, as well as 250 hours of video broadcast on national TV channels.
List of tournaments held in the CIS countries:
Asus Open has been held since 2003 and takes place 4 times a year.
In the first tournaments, the prize funds were up to $ 3,000, and now $ 40,000 is constantly.
This tournament gathers the best players from all over the CIS, and the qualifying rounds are held by more than 10,000 players.
NPKL (National Professional Esports League) is a Russian national esports league that has no analogues in its system of holding and in which, for the first time in the history of esports, a Championship was organized according to the club competition system, which is used in big sports (football, hockey, basketball, etc.).
Many people believe in the stereotypes that games are harmful to health, lead to psychological dependence, cause outbursts of aggression, and so on... in fact, all this is wrong, or rather, these stereotypes apply to all hobbies.
Now we will try to break them.
To begin with, many people believe that esports is not a sport as such.
Why?
No one gives a logical explanation.
To begin with, let's look at what is sport in general?
Sport (English sport, short for the original disport — "game", "entertainment") is an activity of people organized according to certain rules, consisting in comparing their physical and intellectual abilities, as well as preparation for this activity and interpersonal relationships that arise in its process.
Usually, sport is a specific kind of physical or intellectual activity performed for the purpose of competition, as well as improving health, obtaining moral and material satisfaction, striving for perfection and fame, improving skills.
Well, isnot this present in esports?
Isnot there no hard training, discussion of tactics, competitions, morale and emotions, fame and fees?
All this is available in esports and is developed no worse than other sports.
If you watch the final matches live, you can understand the seriousness of the games.
The next stereotype will be the harmful effect of games on health.
It is strange, but I have not yet seen a person who would not break his leg (football) or arm (judo) during training or a match.
Even the most harmless work in the office causes more harm to the body (a person sits at a computer and types a report, he may not get up from the computer for hours, while being nervous) than regular training sessions.
In general, if you do not sit too long for games, but follow the training schedule, then your health does not deteriorate.
A person improves thinking skills, dexterity.
Attention develops (often missing for schoolchildren).
Many former players use their skills in poker, and poker is an intellectual game rather than a gambling game, since playing poker does not mean playing for money.
Many people believe that violence in games provokes violence in real life.
I wonder why?
The press often mentions such "facts" that 2 American teenagers, having played enough, took dad's guns from the wall and went to shoot at passing cars.
Then no one was injured, but except for the reputation of the games.
I wonder what the guns on the wall did and why they were so easily accessible?
Further, the world was shocked by the news about a big shooting in one of the American schools again.
Then 36 people were injured, the killer himself shot himself.
It's not hard to guess why.
Of course, he was an emigrant and the "Native Americans" often mocked him.
These facts make it clear that it is not the games that provoke violence, but the mood of the people in the country.
There are more than 110 nationalities in our country and we have no national enmity or at least some hostility to others, therefore, our country has developed much more in moral foundations than the same America.
Therefore, I do not believe that games provoke violence or other evil.
By the way, there is much less violence in games than on the same TV, and this is a fact!
Those big words that computer games form psychological dependence are not only erroneous, but also provocative, since the same hobby falls under these words.
If a person likes to do a certain thing, this does not mean that he is psychologically dependent and needs to be treated.
I like to read.
I'm sick and I need to be treated?
Strange, donot you think?
Oddly enough, but the parents believe that their child was flown out of a prestigious educational institution with a bang due to the fact that he spent too much time in a gaming club.
Well, if he spent it in chess training?
Chess would not be called a " bad " game.
Everyone should set their own priorities in life.
I know many professional players who perfectly combine playing and studying.
Draw conclusions.
Another stereotype – esports is a children's hobby.
Interestingly, if gymnasts finish their careers at 22, is this considered an "adult" sport?
And they started from the age of 4, or even earlier.
The main age category of players starts from 16 and ends with all 27!
Although there are talents who are already able to compete with the already established champions at the age of 15.
Esports is not a spectacle?
The one who created this stereotype definitely does not know anything about esports.
The final matches of the World Championships are held in arenas, up to 40,000 spectators watch the matches only on the Internet, 5,000 can watch live, while buying tickets for $ 40.
Recordings of the final games are distributed on the Internet and are downloaded by up to a million players.
In Korea, matches are broadcast live on television with comments from professional players.
Here are some statistics about Kazakhstan's participation in the WCG World Championship, which is fully sponsored by Samsung Corporation:
2002: Kazakhstan takes part in this event for the first time.
Result: 7th place in the overall standings in all disciplines.
Moreover, the seventh place is shared with Canada and Hong Kong, which are among the legislators of the game for several years.
For the first time, this is not even bad!
2003: 12th place at the World Cyber Games.
2004: 24th place at the World Cyber Games.
2005: my favorite and the most successful year for Kazakhstan esports!
I call this year the year of the renaissance.
We have finally shown what we are made of.
Kazakhstan took the 9th place in the overall standings, but at the same time Kazakhstan took silver in one of the disciplines!
The team "k23" (Kazakhstan 2030), which participated in the discipline Counter Strike: Source (5x5), won the 2nd place, beating such developed countries in esports as France, Germany and Russia.
The first place was taken by the Americans, as they have the financial resources to participate in such competitions and to prepare for them.
The second place speaks for itself.
Kazakhstan has moved from 24th to 9th place, which is a worthy leap to victory!
The news spread around the world that Kazakhstan, a country that was only average in terms of esports, took second place.
Kazakh players realized that they can not only play on an equal footing with world teams, but also much better than them.
A decent game is possible only after a long practice, which is impossible without sponsoring teams and holding competitions.
2006: 17th place at the World Cyber Games.
Given the fact that the statistics of the places occupied by the countries start counting from the moment of the first speech, and for us it is from 2002, we are holding up well.
What prevents you from attracting sponsors?
Not all people who have the opportunity to sponsor esports know about it at all.
Among the companies, only those directly related to esports and information technologies, or rather companies engaged in the sale of computers and accessories to them, have such knowledge.
Many world famous teams are sponsored by such market giants as Intel, AMD, nVidia, ATI, Asus, MSI, BenQ.
The list can be continued for a very long time.
In 2005, the Ukrainian team attracted a company producing paints and oils as a sponsor.
These guys took the first place in the Russian championship, which gathers the best teams from all over the CIS and continue to win, the result is that the sponsor's brand began to be recognized abroad.
And another interesting example: the sponsor of the Polish Pentagram team is the G Shock brand, this is a children's watch!
The result is that the team has won several prestigious events and has already been world champion twice, and in a row!
The leading manufacturers of computer equipment, sound equipment, and various fields of entertainment are sponsors of the teams.
Players are not only sponsored for trips and training, they also receive a salary.
In Kazakhstan, almost no one is sponsored, okay, beginners, but also those who have twice been the champion of Kazakhstan.
Maximum – a free game in a club or an Internet cafe.
The network of online clubs "Omega Sector" is the leading one in the country today.
Naturally, the management tries to improve the service and fully meet the needs of the players.
Now they are doing it, there are very few left, namely, "Omega Sector" is able to become a platform for holding international tournaments, which will not just be a clarification of the skill level of players, but powerful media projects, in which there will be a show and a lot of interesting things that will gather a considerable number of viewers, as well as sponsors.
At the moment, the audience is the main driving force.
We need to tell the people that esports is not sitting in clubs, but a real sport with serious excitement during competitions!
The people (meaning adults) have the impression that computer games are bad...
Wrong!
If we look into the essence, we will see a real sports excitement, which is present in all types of physical sports.
Even intellectual sports, such as chess, attracts a large number of spectators and participants, although chess is not a very dynamic game.
In Kazakhstan, almost all young people play some games, so it is necessary to give them the opportunity to develop further.
Beginners eventually become amateurs, and amateurs in turn become professionals (if of course they have the talent and desire to win), who are able to bring money to themselves and their sponsors with their level of play.
It is impossible to develop esports on a kind word.
We need financial investments, which are simply not available at the moment.
You canot train for a whole year to lose in the qualifiers for one of the championships.
There should be a lot of championships with real prizes.
For many players, the first place may be more important than the prize, but if there is an opportunity to get real money from it, then everyone will try.
The development of competition both in the game plan and in business is a successful guarantee of successful growth.
At the moment, in 2007, 4 big championships were held in Kazakhstan, or rather in Almaty.
Now I will tell you about them in more detail.
On February 4, the Internet club "Omega Sector 2" hosted a closed invitation tournament "Arbalet Cup 2007", which brought together the best teams of the country, and the champions of Russia were also invited.
The prize fund was $ 10,000.
In mid May, Almaty hosted the selections for ESWC 2007, held in Paris.
The main prize is a trip to France for the World Cup.
In early June, Alser Computers sponsored the "Alser Challenge" championship, where the main prize was a powerful gaming computer, as well as computer accessories.
At the end of June, a closed invitation tournament "Arbalet Masters #3" was held with a total prize fund of $ 10,000.
The 2 best Russian teams were invited to the tournament, which competed with ours.
Next, we are waiting for the qualifiers for the WCG World Championship.
It is safe to say that this year was the most interesting in terms of esports events in our country.
Esports is gaining momentum and should soon reach the world level, if there were no problems:
1. The lack of really high speed available Internet.
2. A small number of championships.
3. Lack of sponsors.
4. And the most important thing is the lack of state support!
Esports has an impact on:
1. Increasing the prestige of the country.
Since the players are considered advanced people, they know who Borat is and what he has done to our reputation abroad.
This can be easily corrected by organizing world class competitions so that foreigners can see our country with their own eyes.
I am sure that they will immediately change their opinion after what they have seen.
Also, a film crew and journalists come with each national team to any World Cup or big tournament.
2. Formation of young people's interest in information technologies.
Esports, as games in general, are directly related to information technologies, which is why players attend IT exhibitions and similar events.
Using the Internet, players not only learn new technologies, but also establish communication with foreign "colleagues".
3. Formation of a culture of communication between regions.
The regions will begin to communicate with each other, exchange opinions, experience, and of course, find out who has reached a higher level at the competitions.
By arranging friendly meetings, the regions will be able to develop and already compete for the capital of esports – Almaty.
4. Development of a new area for investment.
Any business is less profitable without advertising.
Big championships, good press coverage are a big plus for investors or sponsors.
5. An incentive for the development of high speed Internet in all regions.
Since there is a monopoly of the Internet in our country, its development is somewhat slow, since there is no competition.
But there is a more interesting way to develop it faster – this is kipersport.
An online league was already held in Kazakhstan, where 100 people participated in 20 teams, but due to technical difficulties, the league ended in the group round, but all the players waited for the finals for 2 months!
This shows that we have something to develop.
We all play some games that have become an integral part of our lives.
