History of the football club / CSKA Moscow
The professional football club of the Central Sports Club of the Army, or simply CSKA, is one of the most popular Russian professional clubs based in Moscow.
To date, CSKA is officially a professional club and, therefore, has nothing to do with the army (although the nickname "army men" has stuck firmly to the team's players), however, the Russian Ministry of Defense is a shareholder of the CSKA football club, and the central club approves them as its own.
Although CSKA won its last league title in 2006, the club, nevertheless, remains one of the most successful in the history of domestic football.
CSKA has left a big mark in the history of both Soviet and Russian football.
CSKA won the Soviet Union championship seven times(1946, 1947, 1948, 1950, 1951, 1970, 1991), he became a silver medalist four times, and took bronze six more times.
Five times the USSR Cup was in the hands of CSKA players(1945, 1948, 1951, 1955, 1991).
The army team remained specialists in cup matches even after the collapse of the Soviet Union – the team won it six times (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011).
CSKA won the Russian Football Championship three times – in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
The team took the second step of the podium five more times, the third one twice, and also won the Russian Super Cup four times.
This is the history of CSKA's success in the domestic arena.
As for international success, the victory in the 2005 UEFA Cup is certainly the most striking here.
Under the guidance of coach Valery Gazzaev, the team reached the final of the UEFA Cup, where it effectively defeated Sporting Lisbon with a score of 3:1 and, thus, became the first Russian club to win any European cup.
In the 2009/10 season, CSKA managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League – to date, this is the best achievement of the team in the most prestigious club tournament on the planet.
In addition to the official nicknames "army men" and "red and blue", another nickname of CSKA football players and fans is very popular in Russia - "horses".
Presumably, the nickname appeared due to the fact that the first semblance of the club's training base was located in a building that was previously the stables of Prince Yusupov.
At first, the nickname was considered offensive, but today they are used to it and it is used even in the media.
The club has changed its name several times throughout its history.
In 1911, it was founded under the abbreviation OLS, which stood for the Society of Ski Enthusiasts.
Two years later, the team became known as the OPPV (Experimental Demonstration Site of Universal Education), and already in 1928, the team was named the Sports Club of the Central House of the Red Army, or simply the CDKA.
In the 1950s, the team was called CDSA and CSK MO for some time, and in 1960 it acquired its current name CSKA.
The team's record holder for the number of matches played for CSKA is Vladimir Fedotov – he played 381 matches in the army jersey.
He is followed by Vladimir Polikarpov and Dmitry Bagrich.
Among modern football players, the record holder is Lithuanian Deivydas Schemberas.
The best scorer in the history of the club is Grigory Fedotov, among modern football players is the Brazilian Wagner Love.
