Facebook ("Facebook", [ffeɪsˌbʊk]) is one of the largest social networks in the world.
It was founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates while studying at Harvard University[1] - Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskowitz and Chris Hughes.
Initially, the website was called Thefacebook and was available only for students of Harvard University, then registration was opened for other universities in Boston, and then for students of any educational institutions in the United States with an email address in the .edu domain.
Since September 2006, the site has been available to all Internet users aged 16 and over who have an email address.
Facebook is one of the five most visited websites in the world.
As of July 2014, Facebook's audience was 1.32 billion users[2] - these are those who visited the site at least once a month or were recorded using the Like button and tracking cookies for a specified period of time[3].
The daily active audience in March was 720 million people — so much is recorded by the Facebook tracking network every day.
On August 24, 2015, the number of visitors to the social network Facebook for the first time amounted to one billion people[4].
About 810 million people use the Facebook mobile app every month.
Every day, users leave 3.2 billion "likes" and comments on the social network and publish 300 million photos.
The site recorded 125 billion "friendships" (as of December 31, 2011, there were 100 billion).
The number of page views of the site in October 2011 amounted to 1 trillion[5].
Thanks to this site, Mark Zuckerberg became the youngest billionaire on the planet at the age of 23[6].

Functions[edit / edit wiki text]
Facebook allows you to create a profile with a photo and information about yourself, invite friends, exchange messages with them, change your status, leave messages on your and someone else's "walls", upload photos and videos, create groups (communities of interest).
In 2007, Facebook offered third party programmers to create applications (games, music, photo sharing tools, etc.) and earn money from it[7].
Thanks to this feature, the site traffic has increased.
Facebook offers many features that users can use to interact with each other.
Among the most popular are a virtual wink, photo albums and a "wall" on which the user's friends can leave messages.
The user can control the level of access to information published in his profile, and determine who has access to a particular part of the page.
"Like" ("Like")[edit / edit wiki text]
Main article: The "Like"button
The "Like" button on Facebook
"Like" is an expression of consent or approval to the liked entries.
For example, if a Facebook user liked a song.
On January 23, 2013, Facebook renamed the "Like" button from "I like" to "Like"for Russian users.
In 2015, Facebook launched beta testing of a new "Reaction" feature for users in Ireland and Spain.
The main task of the new feature is to give users more ways to express their attitude to the content than was possible with the traditional Like button, through the use of animated emoticons with various emotional shades[8].
In 2015, Facebook started testing a new advertising feature for its mobile app.
The main task of the innovation is to show users ads for various products in their news feed.
The types of goods will vary depending on their interests, contacts and their activity[9].
History[edit / edit wiki text]
Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg.
The idea of Facebook goes back to Mark Zuckerberg's early youth, when he studied at the private school Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.
The school published an annual directory with the names, addresses and photos of students (literally, "the book of faces", "the face book" — Facebook[10]), and when Zuckerberg entered Harvard University, he took the initiative to create a similar network resource, but the administration of the educational institution refused him, citing the privacy policy[11].
Then, on October 28, 2003, Mark Zuckerberg, as a sophomore student, wrote code for the Facemash website, which used photos of people posted in pairs, in order to choose which of them is more attractive.
To achieve this, Zuckerberg hacked into secure sections of the Harvard University computer network and copied private photos.
At that time, Harvard did not have a student "album" (a catalog with photos and basic information).
Facemash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo views during the first two hours of operation[12].
The site grew rapidly, but was closed a few days later by the Harvard administration.
Zuckerberg was accused by the administration of violating security, copyright, and privacy; the punishment should have been an exception.
In the end, however, the charges were dropped[13].
Zuckerberg focused on the initial project.
He opened a website for his classmates, where people began to share their comments about the project.
The following semester, in January 2004, Zuckerberg began writing code for a new website.
He was inspired, according to him, by an editorial in the Harvard Crimson about the Facemash incident[14].
On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched Thefacebook at thefacebook.com[15].
Six days after the launch of the site, three Harvard undergraduates Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narendra accused Zuckerberg of deliberately misleading them that he would help them create a social network HarvardConnection.com but instead, Mark, using their ideas, built a competing product[16].
They complained to the Harvard Crimson university newspaper, and it launched an investigation.
Subsequently, a lawsuit was filed against Zuckerberg[17].
Membership in the social network was initially limited to students of Harvard University, and within the first month more than half of Harvard students were registered in it[18].
Soon Eduardo Saverin (CFO), Dustin Moskowitz (programmer), Andrew McCollum (artist) and Chris Hughes joined Zuckerberg to help promote the site.
In March 2004, the Facebook audience was expanded to Stanford, Columbia University and Yale[19].
Later, it opened at other Ivy League universities, Boston University, New York University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then at most universities in Canada and the United States[20][21].
In June 2004, Facebook moved to Palo Alto (California)[19].
Before moving, Zuckerberg and Saverin meet Sean Parker at a Chinese restaurant in Manhattan[22].
A few weeks later, they run into each other in Palo Alto.
In mid 2004, Facebook was registered as a company, and Parker became its first president[23].
In the same month, the company received its first investment from the founder of the PayPal system, Peter Thiel[24].
It was Sean who found the first investors for Facebook: Peter Thiel and Reed Hoffman, and in the process of receiving investments, he made sure that 3 out of 5 seats on the board of directors remained for Mark[22].
According to Thiel, Sean was the first to see the potential in the company and "if Mark had doubts for even a second, Sean immediately cut them off."
In 2005, Parker left the company.
Despite this, he remains involved in the development of Facebook and regularly meets with Zuckerberg[25].
In 2005, the company removed the article The from its name after buying a domain name facebook.com in 2005, for $ 200,000[26].
Since September 26, 2006, access to the social network has been open to every Internet user over the age of 13 who has an email address.
On October 24, 2007, Microsoft announced the acquisition of a 1.6 % stake in Facebook for $ 240 million, thereby valuing the entire company at $ 15 billion[27] Microsoft has received the rights to place international ads on Facebook[28].
In October 2008, Facebook announced the opening of its international headquarters in Dublin[29].
In September 2009, a profit was announced for the first time[30].
In November 2010, based on data from SecondMarket Inc, the company's value was $ 41 billion (which is slightly higher than that of eBay).
Thus, Facebook has become the third largest Internet company in the United States (after Google and Amazon) [31].
On January 2, 2011, according to The New York Times, the value of Facebook reached 50 billion US dollars[32].
On May 18, 2012, an IPO was held.
Facebook's traffic has grown steadily since 2009.
On March 13, 2010, more people visited Facebook than Google[33].
Facebook also became the best social network in eight separate markets in the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Vietnam, while other brands held leading positions only in certain markets, including Google owned Orkut in India, Mixi.jp in Japan, CyWorld in South Korea, and a Yahoo!product Wretch.cc in Taiwan.
2009[edit / edit wiki text]
On June 13, 2009, users had the opportunity to independently choose the address of their page[34] (www.facebook.com/ < selected address>) at a time when in many other social networks, the user's page can only be accessed by an identifier (on Facebook, the user is initially given a page with the address http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=<user's serial number>).

2010[edit / edit wiki text]
On September 30, 2010, the company signed an agreement with the Skype Internet telephony service, according to which it is planned to integrate it into a social network[35].
On October 7, a new group interface was introduced, written from scratch.
The developers expect that the innovation will allow faster and safer exchange of information between a limited circle of people (friends, colleagues, family, etc.).
Among the features of the new groups: the ability to edit documents together, group chat, publishing messages by e mail[36].
On the night of November 15-16, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg officially announced the launch of his own mail service during a presentation[37].
The best film of 2010 in the drama genre on January 16, 2011, at the 86th ceremony of the prestigious Golden Globe Film Awards, was the film "The Social Network" directed by David Fincher about the history of the creation of Facebook[38].
The film was also awarded three Academy Awards — for best editing, music and adapted screenplay.
On July 6, at the presentation, Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of a video chat on the Skype platform.
On September 22, at the F8 conference, Mark Zuckerberg introduced a new service — Timeline[39] In 2011, a group of hackers calling themselves "Anonymous" threatened to destroy the social network Facebook on November 11 [40].
However, the threat was not carried out.
Later, it was reported that the threats did not come from the entire group, but from individual members[41].
On November 18, Facebook and Skype announced calls from the audio and video calling platform to the social network.
On February 16, 2012, it became known that Facebook will have a feature to confirm the profiles of popular users.
At the same time, the network administration will decide for itself who exactly will receive an offer to confirm their account[42].
Instagram Facebook announced on April 9, 2012 the acquisition of the photo service Instagram for $ 1 billion.
Instagram was launched in October 2010 and until April 2012 was presented only as an application for iPhone, iPad and iPod.
By the end of March 2012, the number of users of the photo service reached 30 million people.
As noted in a press release from Facebook, the value of the transaction was about a billion dollars.
It is planned to close the deal by the end of June.
This is the first takeover of this scale carried out by Facebook[43].
Facebook will transfer $ 300 million to the owners of the photo service and transfer about 23 million of its shares.
In addition, the social network has pledged to pay Instagram a penalty of $ 200 million in the event of a failure of the transaction[44].
On April 23, 2012, it became known that Microsoft would sell a part of the patents acquired from the AOL Internet holding to the Facebook social network.
Of the 925 patents and patent applications that AOL will transfer to Microsoft, Facebook will receive approximately 650.
For this, the social network will pay 550 million US dollars.
Facebook will be able to use the remaining 275 patents and applications from Microsoft under the terms of the license.
After the transaction is completed, Facebook's patent portfolio will include about 1,460 patents and applications, the TechCrunch blog clarifies[45].
60 of them are the social network's own patents, and another 750 were purchased from IBM [46][47].
Facebook is allegedly using the purchased patents in a legal dispute with Yahoo!.
In February 2012, Yahoo!
she accused the social network of violating 10 of its patents, including those related to online advertising.
Facebook filed a counterclaim against the holding in early April [48][49], but in July 2012 a settlement agreement was concluded between the companies, which put an end to all disputes and disagreements between the companies.
According to the terms of this agreement, both companies will provide each other with mutual licensing of Internet technologies[50].
On May 18, 2012, Facebook placed its shares in the framework of the IPO on the NASDAQ exchange at $38 per paper, the upper limit of the price range announced by the company a few days ago (the lower limit is $34).
It turns out that the entire social network is estimated at $104 billion (including shares to be issued in the future), and the amount raised is $18.4 billion (including an option for underwriting banks — if it is implemented).
The company itself and its shareholders have raised $16 billion.
In total, 421.2 million Facebook shares were sold as part of the IPO, of which 180 million securities were sold by the company itself, and 241.23 million were sold by its shareholders.
Facebook's IPO is the largest among the placements of technology companies and the largest in the United States since the placement of Visa, which raised $19.7 billion in 2008[51].
Three months later, by August 18, 2012, the value of Facebook shares fell to $19, thus lowering the company's market value by half since it went public in May.
The reason for this fall, according to experts, was investors ' doubts about Facebook having a clear strategy for further development[52].
On October 4, Mark Zuckerberg announced on his page the appearance of a billionth [53] user.
So Facebook is the only social network in the world with more than 1 billion audience, that is, every 7 inhabitants of the planet is registered on Facebook.
Facebook's only main competitors in the global market are Twitter and Google+, which are more than half a billion users behind.
On November 15, Facebook enabled users of the mobile version to use the Share button[54].
2013[edit / edit wiki text]
On January 15, 2013, Mark Zuckerberg held a press conference at the company's headquarters, where he introduced a new Graph Search function that allows you to efficiently and quickly find multimedia materials inside the social network itself.
The main emphasis in the promotion of the system is made on the observance of privacy — with the help of a search engine, it is impossible to find those materials to which the viewing of content by friends and acquaintances of the user is limited.
The search engine will be available in test mode for several hundred thousand Facebook users, while exclusively in English, the full scale implementation of the search engine may take a long time[55][56].
At the end of January 2013, the social network published financial statements that show a 95% decrease in the company's net profit.
For the fourth quarter of 2012, the profit amounted to $64 million, as a result, this amount was 5 times less than the amount received for the same period of 2011, in which the company managed to receive $302 million[57].
Facebook announced the creation of its platform for Android smartphones — Facebook Home on April 4, 2013[58].
On April 12, 2013, the Facebook Home mobile platform was released.
2014[edit / edit wiki text]
April 21 updated Facebook.
On July 22, the social network launched the "Saved" service, which allows users to add content on the social network to a special list that they would like to see later.
On October 7, Facebook announced the launch of a hyperlocal advertising model, which should allow store owners to display ads on the phones and in the web browsers of users who are in the immediate vicinity of their respective points of sale, within a radius of 1 mile.
It was reported that at first such an option will be introduced in the United States, and then around the world.[59]
2015[edit / edit wiki text]
On Monday, August 24, the social network Facebook for the first time crossed the threshold with a mark of one billion users.
Announcing this event, the founder of the social network, Mark Zuckerberg, said the following words: "This means that every seventh inhabitant of the earth used Facebook to communicate with friends and family.
This is just the beginning for uniting the whole world, " Zuckerberg wrote.
According to a report published in June 2015, the average daily audience of the social network is 968 million users.
Of these, 844 million users use mobile devices to access the social network.
Facebook's monthly audience is about 1.5 billion monthly users.
The company reached the mark of one billion registered users in 2012.
On December 21, Facebook launched in test mode support for photos with video elements created using the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus[60].
Key figures[edit / edit wiki text]

Accel Partners — 11.4 %[11] Mail.ru Group — 5.5 % [11] Peter Thiel 2.5 %[61]
Managers
Mark Zuckerberg — CEO (CEO) Sheryl Sandberg Executive Director (COO) David Ebersman — CFO (CFO)
Financial indicators[edit / edit wiki text]
The company's revenues in the first quarter of 2012 amounted to $ 1 billion 58 million, which is 6.5% less than the previous quarter.
It turns out that the company earned a little more than a dollar per quarter for each user.
Advertising brought $872 million in profit, other sources - $186 million[62].
FBML[edit / edit wiki text]
Facebook Markup Language Fundamentals (FBML), a special interface markup language for Facebook applications, existed at one time, which was a kind of XHTML markup.
The developer was given the opportunity to use ready made elements of the Facebook interface.
Currently, the use of FBML is not supported.
Facebook and Open Source[edit / edit wiki text]
Some of the programs written in Facebook are available to other developers under free licenses.
The most famous of them are: Thrift, Flashcache, Apache Cassandra, Tornado, HipHop, Hack language[63].
Facebook in different countries[edit / edit wiki text]
In Russia[edit / edit wiki text]
On June 20, 2008, the social network Facebook announced the launch of the Russian language version of the site[64].
Users will be able to independently change the interface language in their profile.
"We are very pleased that we will be able to give Russian — speaking users the opportunity to use Facebook," says Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook.
— The number of users of the resource in Russia is constantly growing.
We want to make it easier for them to access our network, which will allow them to share information with friends and family, regardless of where they live."
In November 2011, Facebook overtook LiveJournal in terms of the number of users in Russia[65].
However, in general, Facebook is inferior to Russian players[66], its popularity in Russia is one of the lowest in Europe, as a result, it risks becoming a niche and local social network of the Runet[67].
In Russia, the growth of Facebook, in particular, is hindered by the presence of strong local competitors[68][69].
Facebook is inferior to local social networks (in particular, VKontakte), in terms of the interface, the device of friendlies, the speed of work; many are also annoyed by the excessive amount of advertising[70].
In addition, cultural, linguistic and social features of Russia have a certain influence[68].
According to Jeffrey Mann, an analyst at Gartner, Inc.:
In such markets as the Russian one, there are many people who communicate only with other Russians.
Therefore, for many people, there is no need to switch to Facebook[71].
A special role is also played by the presence in Russia of a sufficient number of mathematically savvy specialists with scientific flair[72].
As a result, users prefer a domestic product[73]:
Facebook has come, it has taken some market share [...] and we see that Odnoklassniki and VKontakte are growing faster than Facebook in terms of the growth of a new audience...[74]
According to KomSkor, the Facebook audience in Russia in 2012-2013 fell in favor of VKontakte[75].
This was indirectly confirmed by Julien Codorgnu, head of Facebook's partnership division, noting that they do not intend to compete with VKontakte in Russia[75].
Blocking the service[edit / edit wiki text]
In a number of countries around the world, the state has forced local Internet providers to close users ' access to the social network.
These States include: Iran, China, Pakistan, Syria, Bangladesh, Turkmenistan[76], Tajikistan.
Most often, the ban is associated with political processes taking place in the country or as a measure to combat religious dissent.
On March 3, 2012, by order of the Communications Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, access to the social network was blocked[77].
On March 9, 2012, some providers in Tajikistan still opened access to the Facebook social network.
The social network was blocked again on the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan on November 25, 2012.
Beg Zukhurov, head of the Communications Service under the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, commented on the decision to block the site as follows:
Does this Facebook have a master at all or not?
Canot he come to Tajikistan?
I would have met him on the days of the reception.
If he does not have time, you can talk to one of his assistants[78].
Also, the head of the communications service expressed doubt that the Facebook management pays taxes in good faith:
Facebook is not controlled by anyone at all, and it is not known who is the owner of this network, whether he pays taxes or not.
Such activities, of course, threaten the security of Tajikistan[79].
It is not specified which state's tax revenues the head of the communications service had in mind at the same time.
On December 7, 2012, Facebook in Tajikistan was unblocked[80].
Criticism[edit / edit wiki text]
Protest action in the USA
Facebook has been criticized for a variety of violations: non compliance with intellectual property rights, disclosure of personal information, child safety, etc.
Surveillance of non US residents[edit / edit wiki text]
In mid 2013, information was confirmed that since 2007, the NSA has been collecting information about users of social networks, including their correspondence, as well as information about the whereabouts of citizens, according to the order of the FBI.
Among other Internet services, Facebook also provides information about users to the special services[81].
Barack Obama confirmed that such a program does exist, but it applies only to those who do not live in the States.
Thus, the head of the White House for the first time publicly confirmed that Washington is secretly monitoring foreigners.
The operation of this program is based on the Law on the Control of Foreign Intelligence Activities (FISA) and the Protect America Act (PAA), which allows you to conduct surveillance of foreigners outside the United States without a court order[82].
Non aversion to suicide[edit / edit wiki text]
According to the available information, people who publish their suicidal intentions via the Internet rarely receive timely help[83].
An example of such neglect (on the part of users and / or employees of a social network) can be the suicide of actor Paul Zolezzi, who published a suicide note on his Facebook page[84].
According to the user agreement, Facebook's public position is "extremely attentive to the safety of human life", including "cooperation with the largest psychological support centers", however, for a number of reasons (see "Lack of user support"), this declaration is hardly feasible in reality.
In addition, Facebook has been criticized for the appearance of symptoms of depression and other pathological mental states in its users.
This fact can be explained by the phenomenon in the mass media called "Facebook envy", in which users are constantly comparing ourselves to others, in their opinion, more successful peers, show their internal stress in the form of deep depression, pessimism, feelings of alienation, suicidal tendencies or inclinations, social isolation, etc.
Sometimes these symptoms to the extent of serious mental disorders.
This effect can be aggravated by the general trend, according to which people tend to publish materials related only to the pleasant aspects of their life, thereby creating the illusion of some kind of impeccable existence, setting an unattainable bar for people with low self esteem [85][86][87][88][89][90].
Intellectual property violations[edit / edit wiki text]
Despite the fact that, according to Zuckerberg himself, "Our philosophy is that information belongs to users, as well as control over its distribution"[91], Facebook claims its rights to the fruits of someone else's intellectual property, refusing to return users their own content from pages deleted for one reason or another, thereby alienating the fundamentally inalienable copyright and going against the norms of international law concerning the protection of copyright and related rights[92].
Privacy violations[edit / edit wiki text]
Based on its user agreement, Facebook reserves the right to freely and at its discretion handle user information even after deleting a user account from the network (previously, user content was stored on the company's servers indefinitely even after deleting the corresponding account, see "Incomplete account Deletion")[93].
In addition, Facebook is inclined to use users ' contact information (email addresses and phone numbers)at its discretion[94].
In August 2013, Facebook published the first report on the amount of partially transmitted information that it was forced to transfer in the first half of 2013 in response to 25 thousand requests from governments of various states for information about 38 thousand users[95][96].
Incomplete account deletion[edit / edit wiki text]
In the first years of Facebook's existence, many users expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of an opportunity to completely delete their data from the social network[97].
There are cases when participants, after several months of correspondence with the technical support of the network and even judicial threats, still found some of their data open[97].
Facebook's hidden storage of information from deactivated accounts has increased fears of abuse of users ' personal data by Facebook, especially against the background of Facebook's new advertising technology that allows tracking purchases made by users.
At first, this technology did not provide for an explicit procedure for users to refuse to use it.
This procedure was introduced only after a scandal and a public protest signed by 50 thousand users.
The Facebook management had to apologize[97].
At the end of 2009, the account deactivation function was still made[98].
On the account management page, you can deactivate it, while the data will be saved, but not available to any of the Facebook users.
And the next time you log in to the site under the user's username, they are restored.
In order to completely delete your account without the possibility of data recovery, you need to fill out a special form.
In 2011, Max Schrems, a law student at the University of Vienna, obtained from Facebook the provision of his confidential data on optical media, including his personal photos, correspondence, deleted messages, and the names of former friends.
The sent PDF file contained information about the student on 1200 pages for more than three years of his communication on the site.
Schrems initiated a class action against Facebook in the Vienna Regional Court.
The lawsuit touches on aspects of Facebook's cooperation with the NSA under the PRISM program.
The claim was supported by more than 60,000 people from 100 countries around the world.
If the claim is satisfied, each of those who supported this protest action can receive compensation for damage in the amount of 500 euros[99][100].
Unethical attitude[edit / edit wiki text]
Facebook does not consider it necessary to notify the user about the deletion of his account (either deliberately or post factum), thereby making it impossible to prevent the destruction of user data[101][102].
Violation of the secrecy of correspondence[edit / edit wiki text]
In January 2014, two users from the United States filed a lawsuit against the social network Facebook.
They accuse the social network of scanning personal correspondence for further use in the target advertising, which is a violation of federal laws on surveillance of citizens and laws on the protection of private life[103].
Lack of user support[edit / edit wiki text]
Since Facebook accepts complaints only through a form on its website and does not provide a specific email address for processing messages, contacting the Facebook team for support or with a claim is extremely complicated: users ' letters either receive stingy answers (with links to the same site help center that is not able to provide comprehensive information), or are completely ignored (in other words, the answer is not guaranteed and is not provided with the responsibility of specific service employees)[source not specified 1086 days].
Sending spam and illegal processing of personal data[edit / edit wiki text]
Facebook is regularly accused[104][an unauthorized source? 716 days] in sending spam and illegal processing of personal data.
If the user agrees to upload his address book to Facebook, invitations are sent to all addresses contained in it to register in this social network.

Interesting facts[edit / edit wiki text]
One of the participants of the revolution in Egypt named his daughter Facebook Jamal Ibrahim.
So he paid tribute to the social network, which played an important role in the Egyptian revolution[106].
In 2010, American businessman Paul Ceglia claimed 50 percent of Facebook shares on the basis of a contract for the development of the site, allegedly concluded with its founder Mark Zuckerberg (see the article about the plaintiff)[107].
According to the Consumer Reports magazine, as of May 2011, about 7.5 million children under the age of 13 are registered on Facebook, which contradicts its terms of use[108].
Instead of actively resisting, Mark Zuckerberg decided to allow them to register, stating that "my philosophy is that education should begin at the earliest possible age," although some organizations and many users oppose his decision[109], justifying their point of view with the presence of pedophiles, an attempt on privacy, common sense and other reasons.
According to a study published in 2011 in Computers in Human Behavior # 5, Facebook users found more signs of narcissism and exhibitionism than those who do not use it.
According to the researchers, the social network contributes to satisfying the narcissistic individual's need for self promotion and demonstrative behavior[110].
[significance of the fact?]
Facebook has announced the construction of a new data processing and storage center.
It will be fully powered by wind energy.[111]
In November 2015, after a series of terrorist attacks in France, the "I'm safe" feature appeared in the French Facebook mobile application.
The function allows you to inform your Facebook friends that your life is not in danger[112].
(Although the function itself has been in existence since October 2014, before the events in Paris, it was used only in disaster zones [113].
After the Paris attacks, the function was used for all emergency situations [114].)
