The Children of Hurin (eng.
The Children of Húrin) is a reconstruction of the unfinished novel by the cult writer J. R. R. Tolkien, which was performed by his son Christopher.
Tolkien began writing this book in 1918, when he was 26 years old, and throughout his life he returned to it, but never managed to finish it.
Christopher Tolkien revised numerous drafts and prepared the book for publication with his own stylistic edits.
The book was released on April 16, 2007.
In August 2008, the AST publishing house published a Russian translation of the book.
The translator was the famous Tolkien scholar S. Likhacheva.
The book tells about the tragic fate of Turin Turambar and his sister Nienor, as well as other relatives (mother — Morwen and sister — Urwen), on whom fell part of the curse imposed by Morgoth for refusing to give the location of Gondolin to their father and husband Morwen — Hurin Talion, son of Galdor the High.
It covers the period from the birth of Turin to his suicide after defeating the dragon Glaurung.
The first chapters describe in detail the childhood of Turin, the death of his sister Urwen, the escape of the boy from the captured Easterlings of Dor Lomin to Doriath, his upbringing at the court of King Thingol and the circumstances that forced him to leave the Enchanted Kingdom.
Then the subjugation of a band of robbers and the continuation of his hopeless war with Morgoth, the path that led the warrior to Nargothrond and destroyed this great kingdom of the Noldor.
Then Turin comes to the forest of Brethil, the refuge of the third house of Edain the House of Halet, meets his sister Nienor there, who has lost her memory due to the charms of the dragon Glaurung, falls in love and marries her, not knowing who she really is.
Then he performs one of the greatest feats of ancient years — with a sword he kills the great dragon Glaurung, who attacked the forest of Brethil.
Before his death, he returns the memory of Nienor, and she, realizing who she married, jumps from a cliff into a raging river in despair.
Waking up from oblivion, Turin, having learned about this, kills the messenger and rushes to the sword.
The book ends with an episode describing how their mother, Morwen Eledwen, dies of grief on their common grave, in the arms of her husband (Hurin Talion), who returned from captivity from Morgoth…
