David Bowie
The musician died on January 10, 2016 at the age of 69
“
It amazes me that people take everything I say seriously.
Even I donot take it seriously
”
Recorded by Anthony Decertis Photographer Michelle Addy
I am a fast dissolving star.
You just need to add water and mix a little.
Hardly anyone will remember me in a thousand years.
I canot even imagine how many thousands of times and how many thousands of people came up to me and said, "Hey, let's dance" (Let's dance, "Let's dance", is one of Bowie's most famous singles. – Esquire).
God, I hate dancing.
It's so stupid.
Here in New York, people often shout at me: Hey, Bowie!
This is normal, it suits me.
Because everyone in London is shouting "Dave", and for that I want to break their fucking heads.
My name is David, and I hate being called Dave.
I think, by the way, that everyone is well aware of this.
I never wanted to become an American until the end.
Therefore, everything I buy and wear is made in Europe.
I love New York and I canot imagine living anywhere else.
It's probably amazing that I became a New Yorker, because I never even thought about it.
I didnot know Charlie Chaplin.
But when I lived in Switzerland, he was my neighbor – or rather, his body.
He was buried in the courtyard of the Anglican church, down the street from my house.
And then some assholes stole his coffin (in 1978, the coffin with Chaplin's body was dug up and stolen. - Esquire) and began to demand money from his family.
It was terrible, especially since I knew his family they were good people.
No, I didnot write Golden Years (a Bowie song created in 1975. - Esquire) for Elvis.
But Elvis heard my demo, because we were both on RCA (a record company owned by Sony Music Entertainment. - Esquire), and Colonel Tom Parker (Elvis ' manager. - Esquire) thought that I should write some songs for Presley.
There was talk that I should be introduced to Elvis and that we should work together, but it all didnot end with anything.
But I would be happy to work with him.
By the way, he once sent me a note: "I wish you a good tour and all the best."
I still keep it after all, Elvis did not throw notes around.
I once asked Lennon what he thought about what I was doing.
It would do, he said, but it was just rock and roll with a little lipstick on top of it.
I have so often come up with a new image for myself that today it seems to me that I was originally a plump Korean woman.
I am often offered roles in bad films.
And, basically, these are some kind of demonic faggots, transvestites or Martians.
It is difficult to live in harmony with chaos.
I have no sense of humor – that's the biggest misconception about my person.
I must have looked really serious once.
But this is only due to the fact that I was very shy at the time.
Actually, that's why I got so into drugs at the time.
When you're on cocaine, you talk and smile for three people.
I think it was me and Dennis Hopper the ones who dragged Iggy Pop drugs right to the hospital.
I think he was taken to a psychiatric ward in 1975, and when we arrived there, all sorts of shit literally fell out of our pockets.
Actually, they donot let people with drugs into hospitals, but we were crazy, and that's why we managed to smuggle everything we had.
I donot even remember that we experienced something like fear.
After all, there was our friend in the hospital, and we had to bring him at least something, because he hadnot had anything for a very long time.
I went without drugs until 1974.
Not so little, right?
And the most interesting thing is that all the things that I have ever done or tried to do, interested me long before I was addicted to cocaine.
So maybe drugs didnot change my life in any way.
Although they helped me to penetrate into the dark corners of my mind.
Now I have become more balanced, that's for sure.
But to achieve this, I devoured a million pills.
I was terrible when I was young.
I remember my first love perfectly: we went to school together, and it was the first girl in the class who grew tits.
Sex became something very important for me at the age of 14.
I didnot care how or with whom it happened.
For me, only the sexual experience was important.
So when I brought a guy home after school and fucked him on my bed, it just added to my experience.
And then I thought: well, if I ever go to prison, I think I know how not to get bored there.
It is very difficult to be a destroyer of morality in a world where there is no morality left.
I didnot know many real rebels who were ready to die for their beliefs.
Even James Dean didnot want to die.
You should always be wary of those who came under the spotlight accidentally, without having any talent.
Such people have a terrifying ability to communicate with the stars, taking them in their arms and giving them kisses.
But these people are only able to reflect light and are not able to emit it.
You canot win or lose, as long as you're not racing.
I think I am able to get the best out of talented people that they are capable of.
A long list of tips that I like to give to all aspiring musicians usually ends like this: "If it itches, try to see a doctor as soon as possible."
It amazes me that people take everything I say seriously.
Even I donot take it seriously.
I write about the sufferings – my own and others'.
The rest is of little interest to me.
I was one of the first to learn about Chernobyl – outside of Russia, of course.
We were recording an album in Switzerland at the time.
It was a pleasant April evening, and everyone poured out on the lawn in front of the studio.
We had the Alps and the lake in front of us, and then our sound engineer, who had stayed in the studio and was listening to the radio, shouted: It turned out that he caught some Swiss radio station, and they, in turn, caught some Norwegian wave.
The Norwegians tried to shout to someone.
They said that huge clouds were moving from Russia, and these are not just rain clouds.
Actually, this was the first news about Chernobyl.
I called a journalist friend in London, but he had not heard about anything like this – Chernobyl was in the main news only a few hours later.
I remember that it was a very strange feeling: to realize that you are one of the few who knows about the threat hanging over the planet.
Very few people can say: I love humanity.
I'm not one of them.
I donot believe in demons.
I donot believe in sinister otherworldly forces.
I do not believe that there is anything outside of a person that can generate evil.
I have always tried to remind eternity that even it can come to an end sometime.
As you get older, you realize that almost all the platitudes, cliches and popular opinions are true.
Time really goes faster with each passing year.
Life is really very short – as they warn about it from the very beginning.
And it seems that there really is a God.
Because if all the other statements are true, why shouldnot I believe this?
I'm not exactly an atheist, and that bothers me.
It's a pity for the lord – after all, he has absolutely no one to learn from.
A person of the XXI century is a pagan: there is no inner light in him, he destroys a lot and creates little, and, most importantly, he does not feel the presence of God in his life.
I hate people who donot know what to do with their free time.
I consider myself a completely happy person.
Unlike many, I took advantage of everything that was allowed to me.
You probably think that being a rock idol married to a supermodel (Bowie is married to Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, a model of Somali origin. - Esquire) - is this the best thing that can happen in this life?
In principle, it is so.
I'm not a real estate geek.
I love boxing.
Boxing is a real sport.
And pumping iron in the gym is fucking boring.
I donot know yet what I will do next year.
But whatever it is, I wonot be bored.
I'm not sure that in a few years I will be working with any record label.
I am not sure that the music distribution system itself will remain the same in the near future as it is today.
A complete change of everything that we know and think about the music business will happen in the next ten years, and no one is able to stop this process.
For example, whether someone wants it or not, I am absolutely sure that such a thing as intellectual property will get a great kick in the ass very soon.
I'm not a prophet or a stone Age dude.
I'm a mere mortal with the makings of a superman.
And I'm still alive.
I like to believe in something.

@dashalegkaya Every poet needs his own critic, otherwise what kind of literature can there be without literary criticism?!

@dashalegkaya Let's bear witness: terrible translations appeared at least on July 3, 2010 in Esquire magazine.
The time will come, gentlemen, and we will punish everyone whose translations contain the constructions "I donot even remember that we experienced something like fear".
Or similar ones.

As a musician, he is not close to me, but as a person — undoubtedly!
And the mood was greatly lifted!

’I donot believe in demons.
I donot believe in sinister otherworldly forces.
I donot believe that there is anything outside of a person that can generate evil.’
- a stunningly life affirming phrase.
But people are obliged to believe in this whole company, otherwise they will have no one to blame when they find themselves in a complete ass.

God, what nonsense.
I'm a devoted Bowie fan.
Firstly, it is coached from various interviews and everything has already been printed.
Secondly, Bowie speaks excellent English and, I'm sure, the word "shit" is not included in his vocabulary.

@kananai kananai «I love boxing.
Boxing — it’s a real sport.
A pump iron at the gym — it's boring the shit out of. "
- an exact quote from an interview with Bowie.
It is quite acceptable to be translated.

Shock and pain and sadness.
And the thought, he's like no one to me, but why after reading We are children from the Tsoo station, his songs did not leave my playlist.
And Life on Mars really took me somewhere away, from where I donot want to be.
